bpourriahi··on Ask HN: Help me, I fuck around on the Internet too much
Admit to yourself that you have an internet addiction. Come to terms with it.

I had a major issue a few months ago, until I realized I truly was addicted. After that I started cutting things out, and now I spend less than 30 minutes a day online, and I don't miss a thing. Actually, my mind is much clearer.

You won't be able to get depth in your thoughts if you keep feeding yourself bits of useless info.

bpourriahi··on Ask HN: Depression, Loss of Motivation, Feeling Lost. Please Help
Depression is not a state of mind. That's not what depression is.

Actually I think I could probably help you or at least narrow the root problem if you emailed me. It's a long dark road when you feel overwhelmed by information.

I've seen so many doctors that did nothing to help me - not for any other reason but the fact that they were uninformed, or biased. Read so many books about depression cures that were curing a root that was different from mine. In that time I'm learned a lot about medicine and what's important. If I could pass that knowledge on to someone else I'd be happy to do it.

I went through the same thing. The best advice I can give you now is to go chiropractor that specializes in many different types of medicines. DO NOT go to a regular MD - they will not help you any.

Depression is a symptom, and can be caused by a variety of factors. You need someone who is unbiased and well educated, and a well-rounded chiropractor is a great starting point.

Nutritional Deficiencies Toxicity Malfunctioning (thyroid, adrenal)

these are all major possible contributing factors that need to be checked.

You can email me at anony304@gmail.com and I'll help you try to figure out the root. Detail in your symptoms helps too (e.g. do you get dizzy when you stand up, are you lethargic, digestive irregularities, etc).

bpourriahi··on Ask HN: Any web startups using Java?
There is a good chance that the more 'boring corporate' people tend to keep to themselves more. I don't imagine serious startups are always glaring things in your face about the technologies they use, which comes off as 'web startup land' to people who are willing to read that kind of stuff. (not that I'm any different)

I bet there's a whole other demographic of serious business people who are busy getting things done instead of discussing unrelated matters, or in other words, doing things that aren't work-related.

bpourriahi··on Ask HN: Having emotional breakdown
Don't make external goals. Only make internal goals. Judge yourself based on that.
bpourriahi··on Ask HN: Is it bad to entertain an idea that has already been tried?
Why do you care to judge an abstraction of another abstraction? How about judging the idea itself?
bpourriahi··on Ask HN: What is a non-developer to do?
- stop relying on advice given by anyone not where you want to be

- the amount of revenue a business makes is based on the amount of value it is able to generate for other people. focus yourself on generating value, whether it is directly for consumers/businesses are a business, or as a proxy working for a business and delivering value through the business.

A business cannot survive without generating value. Focus on the core of business and work from there. Figure out ways you can most effectively deliver value, then start from there.

bpourriahi··on Ask HN: What problem does Foursquare/Gowalla/Places solve?
Entertainment, connection, discovery
bpourriahi··on Ask HN: How does marriage affect the creation of a (successful) startup?
Don't you think this is kind of a ridiculous question?

"How does a relationship affect my business?"

As much as you let it. Each relationship is different. Different people. You are basically asking "How well am I doing?".

bpourriahi··on Ask HN: How did you learn about the design/architecture of backend systems ?
Cloud computing can change 'some of this' or 'all of this' depending on the nature of the work. For many applications/requirements it could change every core design decision (when you can pay for computing by the literal hour). Well worth spending some time learning about (for the OP).
bpourriahi··on Ask HN: What are you working on (hacking)?
What's your email? Mine is anony304 at gmail
bpourriahi··on Ask HN: How do you keep track of your ideas?
Ideas soak in your mind when written down. You will be proud as hell looking back at the ideas you have. They reflect your highest level of thought from your current mentality, and are great indicators of your growth.

Without writing them down, you give them little power to thrive and iterate. Think about how great businesses are made, or how code is made.. It's all iterative.

Write down every idea... Just try it for a few weeks and see where it goes. Like I said before, I use ActionOutline, which is a terrific program for managing all of the 'words' in your life that isn't in code.

bpourriahi··on Ask HN: How do you keep track of your ideas?
I agree with the complete opposite of this.

bpourriahi··on Ask HN: The Best Books to Keep the Entrepreneurial Mindset?
I think the solution to this problem is:

- Listen to motivational audio daily/religiously.

Earl Nightingale Zig Ziglar Brian Tracy

This site has a pretty good selection for reference: http://www.nightingale.com/

bpourriahi··on Poll: When do you usually go to bed?
Past week I have been on a 30 hour wake and 14-16 hours sleep intervals. I should stop that but I don't like going to sleep and I don't like alarms, so the behavior is well supported..
bpourriahi··on Ask HN: How can I recognize when I don't know what I'm talking about?
Presence.
bpourriahi··on Ask HN: Non-coding, single founders?
Give yourself 6 months without any other goal but to learn everything you can about computer science, ad hoc, with a project in mind. I say this because it's demotivating and dis-empowering to be a position of no power, especially when you don't have a lot of cash parked. If you're a smart entrepreneur, I think you'll figure it out, and then you won't be a slave anymore. This may be overkill, but if you're passionate about what's possible in technology, you definitely won't regret building something yourself and giving it all you got.

Just one way to look at things.

America is going down the toilet unless it completely rebuilds its education system. Education is primary, nothing else compares.

By ground up I mean curriculum, methods, grading, classrooms, mediums, etc. Khan Academy.org is a very refreshing step in the right direction. I am learning everything in math while I eat breakfast and before going to sleep - from someone who always hated school, and was especially poor at 'grasping' math the way it was taught.

Learn how to learn, injecting a love of learning, independence. Our founding fathers would be crying if they say how schools were being run these days.

bpourriahi··on Ask HN: Learning Engineering
My advice for learning CS, from someone who is completely self-taught, learn ad hoc and strive to completely understand - trying to just understand stuff built on top of other things without understanding the bottom layer is not very good for learning.
bpourriahi··on Ask HN: Why do I always waste time on the weekends?
Oz, what's your email?
bpourriahi··on Ask HN: Why do I always waste time on the weekends?
Trust me. I've been dealing with this for years. I have somewhat of an unfair advantage in this department. If you don't take care of what's most important (i.e. most of your time), then the little time you do have will be of little value to you.

I will give you an example. My friend wonders why he has a poor diet. He says he knows he should eat better, but he still makes poor food choices. The answer? Because he is failing at the most important things in life. His career. He's desperately confused on the inside, lost, and scared. At 25, living at home, having a pointless and worthless degree, I would be too.

It's like that story... here: http://www.wow4u.com/theprofessor/

Once you take care of the most important, all the less important stuff is easy. In your case, take care of most of your time... your mentality in your spare time will change completely.

(And start journaling your fears and beliefs)

Peace.

bpourriahi··on Ask HN: Why do I always waste time on the weekends?
I will tell you the answer: It's because you spend the other 5 days doing crap.
bpourriahi··on Ask HN: Any health tips?
I have read no books on Vitamin D and only a couple asthma-related articles on its benefits. My lungs were in severe pain and I had been looking for anything that could help, so I tried it. WOW. HUGE difference. Turns out D is extremely important and being deficient can impair and damage many things. It has helped with focus, agility, and I feel MUCH better. It has really help with my depression and lack of focus, which were very serious issues (I was unable to work.. seriously).

Try it for yourself and judge. Not the puny 400IU a day. Take 10,000IU a day for a week (it's not toxic) and see if you feel better.

I have hypothyroid and this perpetuates D deficiency.. I desperately needed it. But most people need more Vitamin D, and its effects are widespread and largely unknown. You can do your own research, but please don't tell me its toxic because of the FDA. Try for yourself and pay attention to your body. Just know 400IU is worthless.
