As a public servant the op’s post basically describes my past year as well. People with no long term view on an institution completely misread a situation and refused to do any investigation into what was actually going on. The difference in public service is I got sent on the road to forced resignation specifically because I was working 2-4 hours unpaid each day against policy (without saying a word) to cover for others and keep our departments role in the agency together, which i don’t think would ever Be an issue at google.
I drew a poignant yet very off color political cartoon the moment the scandal dropped showing German Sociopath 1940s with a gas chamber, side by side with German Sociopath 2010s with VW TDI’s tailpipe connected to a hose going into the same building, the new version with a sign above saying earth.
I know the comparison is dark and compares a targeted ethnic genocide with indiscriminate killing, but the truth is that the damage diesel exhaust does to the human body is truly hard to overstate. To be pushing out 40x the legal limit for years while smugly marketing yourself as so much better than all other diesel vehicles is just a level of evil that immediately drew the comparison for me
It’s going to have severe consequences somewhere down the line as I don’t believe anything nearing the magnitude and density of the coming bankruptcies has ever occurred. That being said I agree it’s meant to be this way, and I will always prioritize RESPONSIBLE business trying to restructure and preserve jobs over landholders who basically do very little work while extractIng as much rent out of their tennants as they possibly can without them leaving.
Good buy! I have a Sako finnlight 300 WSM and kinda wish I went with the WM just for ease of finding ammo, but the kick on the finnlight is pretty fatiguing as is. Completely pays off in the mountains though, How is 300wm on the tikka lite?
Yeah, it’s a bit intense. I’m a licensed professional engineer who works what is traditional described as a white collar job yet wear cargo pants about every day as I’m regularly in the field supervising and inspecting work. My wife is The winemaker at a small but well know boutique biodynamic winery overlooking the ocean here which is a job many people glamorize, yet likewise she wears cargo pants for work everyday (except for events of course).
By all means cargo pants for a pure coder who doesn’t tinker is sensible, but when I’m hacking away on electronics projects at home they come in handy to hold tools and parts.
In your defense I’ve found the recent trend of wealthy, highly fashionable Women wearing skin tight ancient camo patterns from the mid 20th century equally as deplorable as you speak about cargo pants here, and for all I know there is someone who can disagree with my opinion quite reasonably as well.
EDIT: The little runway video on this link about perfectly sums up everything I feel is wrong. I do not understand anything going on here - all stars with loose camo pants and a denim carhartt jacket? SMH
Wow, so thats what it is? My Siri hasnt been working well and I just assumed the two were unrelated. Roughly every other sentence I dictate to Siri has the word 'Play' at the start of it as well, which must be related. I can wait 5 seconds after triggering siri to begin speaking and it is still prefixed with 'play'. No idea why but all these together sound like a support call is in order.
I believe so in some areas, but only because they are using kitchens/ingredients that cost less than restaurants or stores, IE located in bad areas, conditions/treatment worse for cooks, payment less for cooks, etc. Not something that should be supported but something that technology unfortunately makes possible and convenient
I can say that I see violent posts on facebook every day, and often ones inciting violence. I still see absoloutely no reason to take this stuff down. There is a comment section that people can use to share their thoughts and views, and to me this is the place where posts should be getting called out for any issues a viewer has with them. Putting a sensitive content warning on something is acceptable, but in a way that provides no moral opinion on what is behind the content warning.
To remove these types of posts due to a moral opinon is a slippery slope to so much more censorship. If facebook starts actively taking posts down and writing their own reality they should not be protected under section 230.
It slightly bothers me that people regularly claim the marijuana of the 1970's was so much weaker than today, for example the statement that the cannabis of the 70s was no stronger than todays hemp. In my neck of the woods there has always been stuff that is basically as good as it is today. Keep in mind hash has existed at least 1000 years, and cannabis has been cultivated for millenia. Sure, there was copious amounts of low quality mexican weed in the 1970s, but there were people growing the good stuff as well, albeit with lower yields and much longer flowering times. I've grown out some afghani seeds collected in the early 80s from the soviet army and despite the extremely long flowering time it is unbelievably potent and aromatic. Its a much more skunky, acrid aroma than the designer fruity strains of today, but the THC is there.
I went to Nevada a few weeks ago from the Bay Area and bought a very clean car at about 60% of what I would have paid for a similar Craigslist listing here in the Bay Area. If you are willing to travel a bit the deals are out there to be had.
I focused on PV in college and the fact is solar is dirty and they haven't planned for end of life recycling. The potential is great and we will get there im sure, but I always thought it was irresponsible to subsidize and widely roll out especially the early stuff in the 90s that was very inefficient and filled with heavy metals and REE. I'm not up to date now but the only thing I can say is at least the efficiency is better even if they are using similarly toxic elements.
I have no sympathy for this. I’ve seen Airbnb cause significant housing shortages in my area (tourism town), with the owners taking advantage of the city’s resources without giving anything back. They provide no value (except for undercutting our tradition BnB’s prices) and increase housing costs, causing unskilled (and even skilled) workers to need to commute while homes sit empty most weekdays and winters.
Uncontrolled detonation or pre-ignition is a problem in ICE not because it creates less force, but rather because it creates more force and at the wrong time. If engines could be made strong enough to remain reliable while operating on detonation, and the pulses timed right, I imagine you would get more energy out of a given volume of fuel. This whole problem is avoided in a rocket combustion chamber without all the rotating parts
I get what you are going for but LA has about 10x more people in general than the Bay Area, and to my knowledge most christians celebrate Easter, not just Catholics.
I’ve spent time a lot of people that live much better than me in what are considered third world countries, including overall quality of life, who make far less than I do. There are countries where money goes much further and family holds much greater value when compared to work than US culture (and laws) generally produces. They see friends and family for meals many times a week, their health care is affordable, and their jobs are more secure. It would be thought of as a cultural taboo to value work over family, whereas the majority of US employers see placing family over work as a fireable offense. Yes we have more paper wealth, but if we have to work longer hours and are spending it all on utilities, healthcare, and vastly overpriced housing, does it really matter?
Edit: This applies to countries with relatively reasonable populations with respect to their resources. This does not apply to places like China and India where there is a huge population to support.
My wife works with 14 H2As who serve only one property for 9 months a year in about the best possible situation and it is definitely true that they live in bunk houses, but for better or worse you find this everywhere in the world, even singapore[1]. In 10 years of working in the ag industry though, every place she has worked they have always been documented, whether FLC or H2A. The majority I've worked with while helping out during harvest are looking for some order and steady pay to send home while avoiding cartel chaos in Michiocan; they are all upstanding individuals, some who even had professional jobs back home, for example one is a dentist.
It is very uncommon in our experience to find undocumented workers in these regulated environments, though you will still find plenty at the even city sponsored "day laborer" centers, or working for the crews that end up selling their fruit on street corners in cities. From what we have hears, 20-30 years ago there was a much larger truly undocumented immigrant issue.
No one is forcing you to carry a cellphone, and a cellphone really isn’t an inalienable right. There’s a pretty easy solution to this problem if you don’t want to tracked. I’m not in support of what they are doing, but its a bit different than if it were being done with a government mandated biochip or ankle monitor rather than with a phone you voluntarily carry
This is unreasonable. Airbnb operators are often law breaking, unapologetic neighbors, but in this situation they are asking for a bailout? The only way I could get behind this at all is if it is limited to legal, licensed short-term rentals and completely excludes all of the people in my town and others who ignore the laws and sue municipalities until they give up on enforcement. Taxpayer money should not be going to bail the majority of these sharks out.
Look through here for week meal plans. They often utilize all of the ingredients fully over the course of a week, and a lot of the recipes are simple (you can cook them all in one day). Feel free to take your time, and watch youtube videos to learn techniques
I had about a week of alarming, severe back and joint pain and shortness of breath/elevated pulse that I thought was a pulled muscle in my back just making a bunch of stuff act up. After hearing the account of the nurse in Colorado I now feel I may have been suffering from the Coronavirus, but now that I feel healthy the direction is not to get tested as far as I can tell. I guess I'll find out once a test is developed for antibodies.
If this isn't expanded to include Sonoma, Napa, and Solano it might as well not even take place, as it will continue to spread and as soon as the order is lifted everyone will be infected again. Really should be the whole state with no border crossing except for necessary cargo. The more seriously it is taken the quicker things can resume as normal.
Yeah, what is the point of a quarantine if they give you a warning and allow you to shop and leave the city? By very nature of his description it has worked as hoped.
