boogerlad··on The Kimi K3 Moment
> I’ve been running Kimi K3 alongside Claude on my normal coding work, and for all practical purposes I can’t tell them apart

When you say "Claude", do you mean Opus? Fable? What effort level?

boogerlad··on TurboQuant KV Compression and SSD Expert Streaming for M5 Pro and IOS
Does this use anything from the flash-moe project?

boogerlad··on Weave – A language aware merge algorithm based on entities
How can this be used with jj?
boogerlad··on SkiftOS: A hobby OS built from scratch using C/C++ for ARM, x86, and RISC-V
This is your chance! As a clean slate design, you can abandon the concept of a hierarchal file system and replace it with rdbms.
boogerlad··on A new PNG spec
You're right, but aren't you forgetting that for each image, the encode cost needs to be paid just once, but the decode time must be paid many many times? Therefore, I think it's important to optimize size and decode time.
boogerlad··on Ask HN: If you had 100 hours to learn something new, what would you learn?
I think subsidized svalboards are far better. Moonlanders are an evolution to the standard keyboard design, but a svalboard is a step function improvement - a true keyboard revolution.
boogerlad··on Ask HN: If you had 100 hours to learn something new, what would you learn?
If you're going to learn it, use at least a split columnar keyboard and a non qwerty layout. Learning to touch type on a regular keyboard will likely worsen your health compared to your four finger hunt and peck due to the bad uncomfortable qwerty touch typing enforces. Think about the awful pinky curls and reaches. Ouch!
boogerlad··on ZType – Typing Game
Too bad this doesn't use the system keyboard on mobile
boogerlad··on Why Are Men More Vulnerable to Depression in Fatherhood?
It has been 5 years and while it's getting better, I still regret every single day. I never wanted one since I believe I'm unsuitable to be a parent, yet everyone around me assured me it would be ok. It wasn't. I don't spend more than 10 consecutive minutes of quality time with my wife each day and I have lost all desire to do anything. That doesn't really matter though, because I can't do anything. I feel like my ability to execute has been reduced so much. My kid isn't even bad. I think they are quite good. I am the problem. This makes me feel even worse because my kid loves me and I can't return it.
boogerlad··on A kid made $50k dumping crypto he'd created – then came the backlash
You're right about how "useful" needs to be defined. Monero at 30tps and blockchain growth rate is useless for global adoption. Lack of fungibility also makes every other cryptocurrency useless for global adoption.

You're also right that PoS is more sustainable than PoW, but I think this will change your mind: https://old.reddit.com/r/Monero/comments/lv5285/alt_take_on_... It did for me. Thankfully since the energy consumption does not scale with the transaction rate, it's not a long term problem I think. Currently, the high energy per transaction stats are only because the adoption is low.

boogerlad··on A kid made $50k dumping crypto he'd created – then came the backlash
Not monero. It is the only useful cryptocurrency in my opinion, and it is easy to understand that it is private digital cash.
boogerlad··on Ask HN: Who wants to be hired? (December 2024)

  Location: Japan
  Remote: Yes
  Willing to relocate: No
Technologies: Node.js, postgresql, javascript, python, django, playwright
  Résumé/CV: boogerlad.github.io
  Email: boogerlad@gmail.com
I've been a software developer for 6 years but have been enamored by computers since I was a kid. I love analyzing problems and their current solutions and coming up with something better. I'm a strong believer in keeping things as simple as possible and eliminating abstraction layers. I think many web applications sadly treat the database as a dumb data store, leading to data inconsistencies and redundant code. I like to take my time to think things through and (hopefully) design it correctly from the get go.

How does this compare to lamdu?
boogerlad··on Texture Enhancement for Video Super-Resolution
Yeah I've been searching for this kind of display technology for the past couple years and concluded I'm using the wrong search terms or it just doesn't exist. Techically possible with oled / microled.

boogerlad··on Cardboard: a scrollable tiling window manager
Oh I think I understand what you're saying now. You have a laptop with a QWERTY hardware layout, and rely on the WM to remap the keys to a different layout? Sorry I can't help out. Just wanted to understand the issue.

boogerlad··on Why Monero
The fees will remain low in terms of fiat value assuming that if the price goes up, activity goes up due to Monero's adaptive blocksize. See https://monero.stackexchange.com/questions/12729/when-monero...

Regarding the speed, many believe that instant / unconfirmed transactions are safe for day to day activities up to 10000USD. It's very difficult to double spend or inject numerous conflicting malicious transactions in hopes that the victim sees a legitimate transaction but a fraudulent transaction gets mined.

Regarding the ease of use, have you tried featherwallet.org or mymonero.com for mobile?

boogerlad··on Why Monero
Try featherwallet.org
boogerlad··on Remote-first companies that actively hire
I wonder if any of these companies would be interested in paying Monero and just avoiding taxes entirely. Taxes are such a huge headache for both parties. Of course it's illegal, but hard to trace if done right. I think it would be worth being exposed to a wider variety of talent.
boogerlad··on Pg-shortkey: YouTube-Like Short IDs as Postgres Primary Keys
Technically, it can be integrated with Postgres with https://github.com/wasmerio/wasmer-postgres. That said, it makes little sense to integrate this at the database level since it'll bloat up the column size, unless just the encrypted integer is stored (without converting to a base58 string).

As for collisions, a hash function maps an input of any length to an output of fixed length, so collisions will happen eventually. What I'm using is encryption, which cannot collide, otherwise decryption would be impossible https://crypto.stackexchange.com/questions/60473/can-collisi...

boogerlad··on Pg-shortkey: YouTube-Like Short IDs as Postgres Primary Keys
It only states that near the end of the page. What is the purpose of it if it's not secure? It only prevents an attacker from performing naive attacks (+1 to get the next id, for example), which might be good enough... But anyone really determined can crack this.
boogerlad··on Pg-shortkey: YouTube-Like Short IDs as Postgres Primary Keys
I built something better that's actually secure and performant here: https://github.com/boogerlad/crypt-ids/

The issues with this are

1) as more IDs are generated, the probability of collision increases

2) a non integer primary key is slow

For a single database instance, it's far more performant to leave it as an autoincrementing integer and when it needs to be exposed, encrypt it in the backend before sending it out. Why not hashids.org? It's insecure: https://carnage.github.io/2015/08/cryptanalysis-of-hashids

boogerlad··on Anti-Ghosting
Do you know of any microcontrollers with a development PCB that exposes > 62 GPIOs if I wanted to wire all the switches directly?
