bombs··on My verdict after one day of using the iPad
Why can't the future be something that augments instead of supplants?
bombs··on Show HN : I created a PHP Hacker News Clone in 2 hours
Oh, I got it, I just didn't get the point of it.

Neat, but what's with the "password" protected page for Zopte?
bombs··on Why Aussie groceries cost so much
It's worth noting that the cheapest priced groceries at Woolworths and Coles tend to be their own brands, which cover a very wide range of products that you'd find at a supermarket.

The Woolworths Select branded items, while being the cheapest, are often of a higher quality than a lot of name brand competitors.

bombs··on Interesting pricing experiment ($0.99 iPhone app changed to $350.00)
$249 or $2499?

The $249 for 60 days is less than your original price of $199 for 30 days ($4.15/day vs $6.63/day). Does that mean that you've in fact seen more success at your lowest price point?

bombs··on Weight Lifting for Hackers
If you're lifting for hypertrophy, more reps is better than more weight, e.g. 15 reps of 100 lbs instead of 6 of 150 lbs or whatever your maximums may be.
bombs··on 20 ad agencies in Belgium go on strike, produce artful protest
I've worked for another office of one of the agencies involved and the reason that they use Flash is that ad agencies love Flash, because they get to use buzzwords like "rich media" and "interactive" and HTML/CSS/JS isn't "rich" or "interactive" enough.
bombs··on Screw-in coffin patent issued
I can't find anything online, but I can recall reading that Christian heathens were buried vertically, because this meant that they could not enter heaven. Is there anything like this in other religions (especially other monotheistic ones)?

There'll be plenty of non-religious folks who could opt for this or another form of vertical burial, but I wonder how many people or their families would simply opt for the traditional, religious burial.

bombs··on AmEx: "We discourage the use of special characters because..."
A common issue of banking websites is that they force weak passwords, but I rarely hear about banking websites being "hacked". Why?
bombs··on JeffCroft.com: On Flash
"[HTML5] works only in the minority browsers"

Which includes Safari on the iPhone, the iPod touch and the iPad.

bombs··on The iPad Literally Breaks Every Use Case I Had For It
"Even past the fact that the iPad does not have a camera, it cannot run two applications at the same time. Meaning: talking to my girlfriend, I could not look up a train time while we talked. Result: have to use my iPhone while we video chat. All that in a device that commands a price premium."

How do you video chat using an iPhone, which has a camera on the back?

"Again, we run into a software problem. From what I have seen in images surrounding the iPad, you can only have one tab open at a time. Excellent, if this was 1996. Hell, even Internet Explorer 7 had multitab browsing. Oh, and if that Apple sourced processor is so fast, why the hell can I not use it? Single tabbed browsing is just a plain deal killer for content consumption, period."

The button to switch windows or tabs is located between the forward and bookmarks button. It is located in the bottom right on the iPhone.

"Apple almost got there with this one, copying someone else’s interface for iBooks. But then it hit me again, only one app at a time! I listen to music while I read. And Gmail is never closed. Blast, there goes that."

If you're using the iPod and Mail applications, this isn't an issue, as both of these applications can run in the background.

"Again, when are we going to see HTML5 casual gaming? I love the game “desktop tower defense,” which is flash based. iPad? No."

There are many casual games in the App Store, including many tower defence games (my favourite is Star Defence, but there are plenty of good free ones, if 99c is too dear). This is only going to increase with Flash CS5.

bombs··on Tell HN: I just launched a reddit clone for financial/economic news
Is there any intended difference between this and Markenomics?
bombs··on The Great Fish Oil Experiment
Vegetable oils and nut oils are primarily omega-6 and omega-9. This is why people take fish oil and other omega-3 supplements; it's much easier to get omega-6 and omega-9.

I'm curious if your problems were caused by EFAs in general or a particular type of EFA, e.g. linoleic acid.

bombs··on What project are you working on during the upcoming holidays?
I thought I'd get out and meet new people by working as a department store Santa. It's so different to what I'd normally do that it's bound to be... fun... right?
bombs··on What would you do with the Wolfram Alpha API if they made it more accessible?
I'd really like access to their nutritional information, so I could create a better meal planner and logger for myself.
bombs··on What do laid off bankers do when the severance runs out?
For me, the point of going out for coffee is not the coffee part, but the going out part.
bombs··on Typekit launches
It's a pity that to use the fonts I would like to on my single website, I'd have to sign up for the portfolio plan, which is a reasonable $49.99 for the first year, but jumping up to $17 a month thereafter.

It's too much for me to justify, when the font could be purchased for $40, with a license that allowed the use of sIFR.

bombs··on Ask HN:Should google include tweets and retweets as part of pagerank?
Do you mean basing a PageRank not based on Twitter's PageRank, but on the users' popularity or influence?
bombs··on 100,000 iPhone applications, Do we need so many?
Are the AppsFire statistics only valid for apps that are used by AppFire users? It'd be useful to compare statistics for how many apps are used more than once or twice after installing too.

Apple sold 7.4 million iPhones last quarter alone. A single digit percentage of total users is still A LOT.

Do I need 100,000 apps? No. I only use a dozen non-Apple apps, but I'm willing to bet that even if you use only a dozen apps, we're not going to be using the same ones.

There's a lot of junk in the App Store that maybe no one uses, but quantity doesn't necessarily mean there isn't quality in numbers either.

bombs··on Ask HN: do you have a low-stress job? What kind of job is it?
Have you thought about getting a steady evening job instead?

I've found working as a gas attendant in the suburbs during the evenings to be low stress and often giving me time to read.

bombs··on Getting the most out of a laptop battery
I've ruined a battery by keeping it in my laptop, when it's plugged into the wall at my desk, letting it get very hot for several hours a day.

It's a small price to pay for the convenience of being able unplug my laptop and go elsewhere without fussing about.

bombs··on Business Card Designs
It doesn't fit in a Rolodex, because it doesn't belong in a Rolodex! (http://youtube.com/watch?v=4YBxeDN4tbk)

I use plain, white, unlaminated business cards from Moo (http://www.moo.com), because they're cheap and they're easy to write on.

These business cards are much prettier than my own, but I write extra information on business cards and that'd be impossible on most of these.

Maybe they're memorable enough that I wouldn't have to write on them.

bombs··on How To Break A Bad Habit [list post]
Conversely, the Jerry Seinfeld method (http://lifehacker.com/281626/jerry-seinfelds-productivity-se...) has been one the best ways I've found to keep good habits.

I've been using Joe's Goals (http://www.joesgoals.com/) to achieve it.

bombs··on FitBit: Self-Tracking 2.0
I got around this problem by planning my meals well in advance. I stick to the plan around 90% of the time, which means that my shopping list is easy to generate and my unplanned eating is easy to keep track of.
bombs··on 50 years of space exploration in one info-graphic
It's easy enough to look up a list of missions to X on Wikipedia, but it'd be nice if the image included mission names.
bombs··on Giant Ribbon Discovered at the Edge of the Solar System
I'm not an astrophysicist, but I imagine a mass spectrometer to measure its make up and magnetometer to measure the magnetic field would be at the top of the list.
bombs··on Twitter Creator Jack Dorsey’s iPhone Payment System
Sure, but it won't work with any phone, because Apple uses a proprietary TRRS connector that allows data to be sent to the iPhone/iTouch (used by Apple for an external mic and remote on standard earphones).
bombs··on Twitter Creator Jack Dorsey’s iPhone Payment System
As a lot of credit and debit cards are moving towards using smart cards with a PIN over magnetic swipe cards with a signature, I hope that Squirrel will support these too.
bombs··on Does Exercise Boost Immunity?
The answer is no; it decreases it.

My personal experiences match the findings of these studies. My diet and supplement use is much better during heavy training and exercise periods, so I'm hoping that that will offset it.

bombs··on Plan to write big software - and you have already lost
Scope, money and time are what I know them as, with quality as an optional fourth (that could be included as part of scope).
