bodantogat··on No one buys books
To add to the woes of the publishing industry, a lot of sales are lost due to piracy. $300MM a year for the US alone (per a 2019 article).

bodantogat··on Americans' new TV habit: Subscribe, watch, cancel, repeat
Now if only I could buy just the one show I want to watch, and not pay for the entire month.
bodantogat··on Stop Doing Cloud
I spend quite a bit on cloud, and despite that I would not spend my time setting up my servers/firewalls /auth .. Just not worth the time.
bodantogat··on Tell HN: Ever think of applying to YC? Do it this weekend for S24
I wish I had applied when the sessions were still remote. Can't leave my fam for 3 months(I'm on the east coast)
bodantogat··on Ask HN: How's AI different than the dot-com era?
In many ways, it feels the same to me. Specially alarming to me is that some of my friends, who have no idea how LLMS & AI work, are seriously considering investing in it. The barrier to entry is quite low, and getting lower. Almost all the models out there can be used cheaply via API - millions of tokens/words processed for less than a few hundred dollars (if that much). For those willing to spend the time, services like replicate, anyscale are even cheaper. Basically, anyone who can call an API & feed it data, can get into the "AI" business. And they are.
bodantogat··on Ask HN: One-person companies—how do you manage it all and stay sane?
I assign certain days in a week, (and sometimes hours in a day) to my different personas. I only plan out a few days at a time in advance. I just dump these on my calendar as events. Aside from a few unexpected events (like a bot attack that ruined last week for me), its been working well enough.
bodantogat··on Postgres as queue
I like this approach, especially for systems that don't immediately require scaling to millions of users. I use MySQL with the 'SKIP LOCKED' option for my queues. I recognize that this method may not scale indefinitely, but it negates the need to add new infrastructure across all environments, saving on costs and devops effort. I've intentionally designed the event sending and receiving code to be abstract, ensuring that if the need to switch systems arises, it should be a reasonably manageable task.
bodantogat··on Rebuilding Netflix's video processing pipeline with microservices
Possibly. I use my iPad for netflix.
bodantogat··on Rebuilding Netflix's video processing pipeline with microservices
My pet peeve with Netflix is that it occasionally forgets where I last paused my video. I don't often watch Netflix, so when I do, it's annoying that I can't resume from where I left off
bodantogat··on Show HN: I wished for a site with a growing list of math problems, I built it
Very cool. Made me realize how much I used to like math as a student, and how much I've forgotten.
bodantogat··on Midjourney 6 Means the End for a Big Chunk of the Photo Industry
Same here. running FF with uBlock Origin. On Chrome half my page filled with ads :(
bodantogat··on What PWA Can Do Today
Perhaps I should have chosen my words more carefully. The obstacle is that its not intuitive that you can install/save this PWA to my home screen via the Share Button. Someone is going to have to tell you the first time. If you open the original link on an iPhone, and click the "Install to Home Screen" button, it'll show you a popup with screenshots and instructions. The user will have to be somewhat determined to install the PWA.

As opposed to an obvious button that says click me to install/download. (The usual Get it on the Appstore buttons), or Smart Banners[1]. The banner/button makes it crystal clear that I can click it to install the app. (Yes, you are correct you may need additional clicks to actually install, but by that time, you are in a familiar workflow).

bodantogat··on What PWA Can Do Today
Not on the list of Apple's priorities I guess. If you have an app, you can include a meta tag on your web page and Safari will show users an Get from app-store banner at the top of the page. (https://developer.apple.com/documentation/webkit/promoting_a...) Would it be nice if they did that for PWAs.
bodantogat··on What PWA Can Do Today
Its not intuitive for the average user. "Share" does not usually imply "Install" , and the add to home screen option for me is way down in the menu.
bodantogat··on What PWA Can Do Today
Not really. Not for non-tech savvy users. Try it on an iPhone. First you'll have to find the share button on the browser bar, then scroll down and find the option 'Add to home screen'. I don't think its very obvious.

Most users don't know about it, and need a how-to guide - similar to what the posted link does.

bodantogat··on What PWA Can Do Today
On IOS, I can't install a PWA/add to home screen with a simple click. I think thats the bigger obstacle.
bodantogat··on Writing books remains a tough way to make a living
Also, its very difficult to make money on just one book. Most indie authors start seeing better sales after 5-10 books, having built up a loyal reader base.
bodantogat··on Code Is Not Technical Debt
In a way, its kinda like financial debt where if the monthly payments on principal/interest are not too bad, I'd rather not refinance.
bodantogat··on Ask HN: Vite or NextJS?
NextJS is fairly easy to pickup if you're familiar with React. The basics and a quick prototype will probably take less than a day.

NextJS was (and maybe still is) a popular choice for server-side rendering. If you don't need that, not sure if its worthwhile.

bodantogat··on Build a search engine, not a vector DB
Exactly in the same place as you with Elastic Search (8.11). Went down the vector path to get better matches for adjectives, verbs and negations ( "room with no skylight" vs. "room with skylights" & "room with a large skylight"). Different dataset obviously, but I think I get slightly better results than your examples and it might be worth looking for a different sentence transformer (I tried a few and settled on roberta-base-nli-stsb-mean-tokens).
bodantogat··on Ask HN: Science Fiction Starter List
Hyperion by Dan Simmons The forever war by Joe Haldeman ( some of it is on earth but it’s mostly off world) Solaris By Stanislaw lem It’s been a while since I’ve read The Left Hand of Darkness by Ursula K. Le Guin, but I think it’s off world too.
bodantogat··on Ask HN: Books you read in 2023 and recommend for 2024?
I read Malazan for the first time this year after putting it off for decades. Loved it and will likely read it again
