boboche··on How to run an LLM on your PC, not in the cloud, in less than 10 minutes
I use LM studio https://lmstudio.ai/ for my lazy setups. The 10 minutes is used to download the actual models.
boboche··on Stack Exchange Data Dump [Archive]
The dump was added in 2014 fyi.
boboche··on Computer-generated holography with ordinary display
An actual holographic article, not some autostereoscopic or barrier! Thanks for the find!
boboche··on Viewing the 2024 Solar Eclipse with Commodore 64's 1984 Sky Travel [video]
What a treasure, I just remembered this was one of my first interaction with a commodore 64. Engineer friend of my father was trying (and succeeding) at triggering my 8yrs old curiosity. I was seriously impressed as he showed me the screen vs the sky. Looking at this with my adult eyes today, I am even more impressed at the render and tech behind that piece of software.
boboche··on Amiga Samplers: Budget dance music in 1990
Had a “Perfect Sound” and audio master 3. Nothing beats that first burp recording & playback at different speeds when you are 12 :)

Med and Octamed were my favorite tracking tools, Octamed still exists today on windows (never tried it but here : https://archive.org/details/med-soundstudio-v2.1

Amiga version https://archive.org/details/octa-med-v-5.00c

boboche··on Babylon 5 Is a Perfect, Terrible Series
B5 was my inspiration for 3D and digging into lightwave back in the days.
boboche··on Limitless white hydrogen under our feet may soon shatter all energy assumptions
The telegraph shattered my spam-paywall-popup-ads everywhere-ragequit limit to a point where I genuinely wonder if they actually manage to convert traffic with such agressive tactics?
boboche··on Making a potato livecam with the Commodore 128 VDC and ComputerEyes
T2 is my all time favorite movie movie, I didn’t know the T800 from T1 overlay was 6502 assembly language. Just that extra “useless knowledge” alone was worth the article lol. thanks!
boboche··on Tesla on track to smash targets after producing almost a million EVs in 6 months
I don’t get Why the hate and easy one liners like this, when Tesla refunded the only gov lease they got with interests while all legacy are digging their deficit further, the rest is equal grounds for all manufacturer to compete.

American should be proud and supportive for any local company actually dedicated to quit fossil fuels or anything about not relying on another country.

boboche··on How I changed my D-Link camera to a locally managed IP camera
Ftp upload, local storage and some that I dont mind being exposed are sending to telegram. Looking into frigate right now, guess that makes me a grandpa ;)
boboche··on How I changed my D-Link camera to a locally managed IP camera
For those who are anti-cloud or want a 2-tier system for any good reasons, Been using this with several wyzecam V2 cameras for 2 years with no issues other than the cameras not being low light sensitive like the V3, otherwise the setup is pretty solid and fast.

boboche··on PED81C: A video system for AGA Amigas that provides pseudo-native chunky screens
You are refering to the DCTV? Was also used as a digitizer. Still got mine.

Nostalgia does weird things.

boboche··on Sim Wong Hoo has died
Still got mine here in a box with my SB live 5.1. That thing was a blast to mess around with as a kid, but not really practical for anything semi-pro compared to just pluging a midi keyboard due to the limited number of keys. Had a Yamaha PSS (451?) which was a tad better but the key size being smaller than a regular piano was also an issue. Couldn’t get rid of that keyboard tho, its epic :)
boboche··on VHS-Decode – Software defined VHS decoder
too bad the first and best capture option costs several hundred of dollars otherwise this would be epic. Now its just awesome ;)
boboche··on Kinograph: Open-Source Film Digitization
Looked at it a few years ago, the gate stuff was meh, bought a good old projector off ebay, added a 95 CRI led instead of the bulb and replaced the motor with a stepper to accurately control film advance and used a modified canon with magic lantern firmware to do the capture with silent shutter to not kill the camera or use beyond video resolution (which is overkill, i know, but I wanted both hdr and wdr so multi shots). Fun little project if you have the image processing knowledge. Else, the lazy best bang for the buck deal is getting a wolverine film digitizer, too bad the firmware isn’t open tho.
boboche··on Eye of the Beholder: C64 Port
Just in time after finishing recapping my C64C! Thanks form this!
boboche··on CT scans of batteries
No 4680 cells, its 2170.
boboche··on My Trip to Space Filled Me with Overwhelming Sadness
Had the same feeling after toying with google earth for 30 mins in VR, jumping cities and what not, after that time, I began to zoom out, out and out... looked around, and its really hard to put in words, but WS puts it extremely well.

War and all the idiocy down here are so..... when you realize how lucky we are and how fragile all of this really is...

Hopefully with the event of space tourism this will be a common theme and the experience will serve to educate and raise the bar for humanity.

boboche··on You can't buy a Raspberry Pi right now
2 years to get a PiStorm amiga accelerator at a decent price (https://github.com/captain-amygdala/pistorm) due to chip shortage.

Finally managed to get 3 PiStorm boards (for a more decent price than the scams off ebay), but I have only one Pi 3B, and the 3A+ or Zero 2 are nowhere to be found

Only option is to buy 3B/B+ which are a little more common, at 3x+ the price, and unsolder the usb connector.

Sure feels like back in the amiga days when I was waiting for the Emplant to emulate a PC and whatnot... or waiting for Gateway, Escom, etc... to do something useful...

Come to think of it, it's a perfect retro experience WITH post-1994 frustrations of waiting with constant hopes and failures as a bonus :)

boboche··on BBSing at 300 Bits per Second
Mid-end 80s. Started with a western digital 300 bauds on my c64. I remember i could boost it to 350bps before it would start garbling. Good times.
boboche··on Flight Simulator 2022: Ultra Realism on RTX 3090 with $100 Graphics Mods [video]
Still remember FS 1.0 on an IBM PCjr with cheezy sounds and pseudo vector graphics, yet it was amazing. I’m grateful (and still amazed) seeing this level of tech today through my inner-kid’s eyes of back then.

One can only wonder how it will be in the next decades.

Hard to NOT at least consider we are living in a simulation too ;).

boboche··on Adventure game graphics with DALL-E 2
Got my access 2 days ago, after ~3 weeks wait. They are probably prioritizing based on business case too, i.e. potential $ > developpers > personnal use.
boboche··on Adventure game graphics with DALL-E 2
I love article titles and my imagination as I thought someone made an actual clicking game with on the fly generated content through DALL E :)
boboche··on OctoPrint: Snappy web interface for your 3D printer
Haven’t toyed with it for a while and might not serve your specific use case, but I used this with my custom-made dlp printer : https://www.nanodlp.com/

My controller was a simple stepper motor and display is a DLP projector.

Might not support esoteric controllers and displays though.

boboche··on Tell HN: Amazon shopping is racing to the bottom of quality
Their latest financials asically show that without cloud, there would be operational issues. Interresting breakdown analysis of Q2 here (Tom Nash)

boboche··on Asus put out like 40 models of a laptop called the “Eee PC” (2021)
Still got mine (900) running a low power linux and swapped the dead slow ssd to a 64gb somewat still slow drive. Not much use other than carrying on trips so if it gets stolen I wont care… its a shame to see so much good computers are thrown out while still perfectly working.
boboche··on Ask HN: Have you ever had a changed-your-life moment?
When I saw my first (300Baud) modem at my dad's friend, and he had a 1200 so gave me his 300 and some software for my commodore 64 to poke around, this completely changed my life from a bored small kid with way too old and religious parents + boring family activities nowhere near adequate to a fully stimulating learning journey into telecom and BBS.

Then he showed his amiga, I'll never forget my first time ;) That drove me in media and tech for a good part of my life.

boboche··on I bought a cheap electric pickup truck from Alibaba (2021)
If those were imported massively in usa or canada [and take a chunk off the 2k shipping and other extra fees that could be averaged down], they would sell tons even if not street legal, awesome base for hacking or small vehicle for small farms or woodlands.
boboche··on The Impact of Posing with Cats on Female Perceptions of Male Dateability
Cats… meh. Would love reading the same study with dogs, and sub-categorize between big dogs vs. smaller.
