boboche··on The World of Vintage Operating Systems
No Amiga OS listed but loads of granular of others less popular OS are?

Guess there's a lot of more work to be done there!

boboche··on The Black Sky Event
I think while ressources are available, localized event (even major) and its not world-ending, this is true and a beacon of hope in humanity.

However when ressources are no longer produced, people get hungry and desperate with no lights at the end of the tunnel, i.e. real game-changing global catastrophe, I hope I am wrong (and hope even more to never test that theory), but I doubt this would bring the best of humanity overall.

Fear mongers have one good thing: if you can reply with facts and destroy their theories, nutcase aliens mind controlling aside, it means that it has been studied or acknowledged. Simple dismissal might not be the best way to fix holes or anxious bodies.

boboche··on SolidLight offers a true holographic video display
https://youtu.be/rF0ooPdmF8o

Found this presentation while digging, intro is interresting for people wanting to roughly cover 3d displays and what’s holographic vs hyped stereo or mirror displays.

They go more in depth with the tech around the 20 and 26 minutes mark but won’t show actual stuff.

boboche··on SolidLight offers a true holographic video display
At least this time the article clearly make the distinction of people using the buzzword vs. the notion of a lightfield. Author seems to know the basics and got geuinely impressed so for once now I am cautiously curious. Wondering if they will show something at CES?
boboche··on Avoid Ultrasonic Humidifiers
Thanks for sharing this. Right now I know someone that is complaining of massive "white dust" thinking its coming from the ceiling (you know those fugly textured ceiling for soundproofing). While it COULD potentially generate dust, the level I have seen would make the ceiling dissapear within years, however due to nosebleed problems when dry, she uses humidifiers everywhere in the appartment. Since the heating dries up the place like crazy, she got ultrasonic humidifiers.

I never considered this but it would make sense, if you boil 1L of water out you end up with white stuff in the bottom once everything is dried out. Since nothing's left in the container when the ultrasonic is emptied, 1+1...

I don't know why this is flagged. People are way too rapid to dismiss stuff around here. Thanks for posting this!

boboche··on Canada tells Boeing its bid for fighter jet contract falls short
Boeing went dirty against Canada’s bombardier big time with the c-series regional jet which they did everything possible to block them out until they ran our of cash and basically gave the complete project to airbus in exchange to save the jobs (this is an oversimplification but the general idea). Going with boeing wouldn’t have fared very well with a lot of canadians.
boboche··on Trackers: The Sound of 16-Bit [video]
You know you are old if you can point on which platform the shown cracktro where playing in the video.

You know you are epic if you can name the cracked software for each :)

Joking aside, the background speedball music… oh man… good times.

boboche··on Reinkstone R1, the Ultimate True Color DES E-Paper Tablet
The lack of technical information on the site is staggering. Who will put that amount of cash with no clear specs shown right off the start? Or am I missing a button or section because I’m browsing from an ipad? Getting that more often these days.
boboche··on Katerra wanted to transform construction. It burnt $2B and shut down
Krattera.
boboche··on Doom Rendered via Checkboxes
Finally found THE URL to send to people requesting stupid checkboxes everywhere.

Now we need a mass popup version to close that loop.

boboche··on Captain Kirk: Bezos' Blue Origin to Send William Shatner into Space
Careful how you treat this, lots of people around here got their first computer interaction with the VIC-20, completed their first programs tutorial with an ascii jumping jack and played gorf! ;)

boboche··on OpenRA: Red Alert, Command and Conquer, Dune 2000, Rebuilt for the Modern Era
Hell march metal song and game play of Red alert 1 was the first time I looked at a PC and felt My beloved Amiga was growing old. Good and bad memories wrapped in an awesome game!
boboche··on Toyota to spend 1.5T yen on EV battery development
Joint venture with BMW, lots of BMW tech, so not a “natural” Supra just like the ft86/fr-s is a joint venture with Subaru, people call ‘em a Toyobaru around here :).
boboche··on Toyota to spend 1.5T yen on EV battery development
Simple, 2 separate issues tickling me.

Not saying Tesla are not terrible at RTR, they are. But they are also accelerating electrification and catching everybody off guard. Including auto repair shops. Some are actually starting to be the Rossman of teslas and I beleive the momentum RTR is getting will naturally creep in and bite them too soon or later.

For now I can just agree and its one of the reasons I won’t buy a Tesla as I like to keep my cars until they completely die (usually rusted beyond repair with 300kkm+) while keeping my repair costs down.

Toyota was pointed as a major lobyist against right to repair and financed FUD ads in the US on ballot initiatives btw, Tesla was not in that group.

boboche··on Toyota to spend 1.5T yen on EV battery development
Ex Corrola and Celica owner, and ex Toyota fanboy. I was on the market and considering a Supra once the car craze would settle. After seeing all the lobby money against right to repair, trying slowing down Tesla with congress and all, I decided I would not contribute to a brand that used to be a leader in quality and innovation, but now acts as a desperate trainwreck and instead of focussing on improving seriously, they are playing games with numbers (and not being any better than Bezos with SpaceX on the political side) Shame.

Must hurt them bad having sold those TSLA shares when they were worth a fraction of today’s price.

I hope they bounce back, drop the attitude and become competitive again. They made the mistake of being overconfident without acknowledging the competition or (ex) partners, clean competition is always good. Especially in this segment for our planet’s sake.

boboche··on Borax
Depends on the glue used, it might be a little brittle when fresh out, test it on non-critical surfaces. Sometimes I put a little more glue than water, etc. Experiment with fractional mix before going all in.

You do now need to use all the water from the mix if there’s leftover after a long mix.

boboche··on Borax
One use I have for borax is making cheap slime to remove dust on tough to clean parts. OLd PCBs with lots of electronics that wont air dust easily, car air vents, etc.

Most common mix is - Dissolve 1 teaspoon of borax in 1/4 cup (2 oz) warm water. - in a separate bowl, Mix 1/2 cup (4 oz) kids glue with 1/4 cup of warm water. - once everything is mixed properly, you can also add food color, glitters and whatnot. I stick to white so I can see the crap I capture and when its saturated properly. - Mix the content of the 2 together a lot

The resulting slime can be used later when sealed properly.

Don’t skip the water-glue mix, it helps with the end result.

You can capture a LOT of dust without creating airborn particles, or have something fun for the kids to play with.

boboche··on William Gibson is a literary genius
Funny coincidence as I am reading a novel that I have been putting off for decades, Neuromancer. Which I discovered after playing the game with the same name on C=64 as a kid.

I loved the rendering of the cyberspace, the combat logic, the story and all.

There are complete walkthrough now on youtube if you don’t want to go through all of it. The Amiga version was very nice graphically.

I would love to see a GOOD Neuromancer movie. That would bring me back in the theatre.

boboche··on Arctic Adventure: A lost 1981 TRS-80 adventure game by Harry McCracken
Anyone read this in diagonal imediately thought of Zack? :)
boboche··on Amiga 1200 PiStorm Development
I admire people pushing projects like this.

Its hard to put in words, 28+yrs later, the hardware still working and so many people being aaround it to make such an initiative worthwhile… i’m just eternally grateful to the person who introduced me to this amazing platform back in the days.

Looking foward to putting one in my A1200 as well.

Oh and finally the needed excuse to get yet ANOTHER pi too!

boboche··on Is catching Covid now better than more vaccine?
Look at the death rates now compared to last year’s wave in countries that have a higher vaccination rate. Not saying its a miracle or perfect, but the numbers are speaking. I’m not for booster shots or being vaccinated x times, heck, I had a problem with requiring 2 shots for something that is not 95%+ effective. But after doing the maths of probability of infection, probability of sick or long term covid vs vaccination issues… I didn’t like the conclusion but I’m not in denial and trying to find information to confirm my initial bias, I took the second shot. All this said, I won’t accept anything else before a full year or higher % now.

AlphaVM is also another commercial product that I’ve seen used in production. There used to be a free tier but unfortunately its not available anymore.

boboche··on GR-1 Anvil – world’s first handheld Gauss Rifle
3000$ for 200fps? Am I missing something?

Maybe I just played too much Instagib and have impossible expectations when I see gauss rifles or railguns?

boboche··on Why the McFlurry machine company just got hit with a restraining order
If companies don’t like right to repair, how about no rights to fail instead? SLA exists for that reason and when you are working with that goal in mind, you (usually) get better output at higher cost, yes, but surely less than several breakdowns.

So, outside planned maintenance, the 2$ question is why is McDonald accepting this in the first place? Anyone has more knowledge? There are so many McDo POS maybe the number is high but the ratio on par with other similar equipment?

boboche··on Crystal arrangement results in more power from ferroelectric solar cells
Not 1000x net output since we are in what now, 10-20% efficiency with current available cell technology? That would not make sense.
boboche··on Object Wake-Up: 3-D Object Reconstruction, Animation from a Single Image
Try scanning finer features or complex setups, you will hit the limits of photogrammetry fast.

3d scanners and photogrammetry didn’t solve hair scanning yet, to name one example. And I am not talking up to each strands, just ending up with somewhat of a model without having to postprod based on hair type, etc. that’s just one example of many.

boboche··on Facebook has sold 4M Quest 2 headsets in the US, recall docs reveal
Amen to that.
boboche··on Amateur photographer captures goose flying upside down
At that level, It is digital pollution. Hosting that much crap use up ressources and accomplishes little to nothing.
boboche··on Looking Glass Portrait – Holographic Display
Autostereoscopic can be multiview. I’ve worked with 9 and 25 viewpoints, (on which you could also add eye tracking) without anything tracking, you could move left and right and still get some volume effect. Its repeating and somewhat limited but basically its the same thing here. More viewpoints, less resolution, better angular projection.
