blokey··on Google to ban financial lending apps from accessing user photos, contacts
There are two APIs in iOS for the photo browser, the API where the app gets access to your photos so it can draw the list view of “all the pictures” is gated with the permission.

The newer API that pops up a system control that lets you select a photo (or more) and only then if you select one, it returns that picture (only) to the application, that API does not need permission, because unless you select a photo, the app does not have access to anything.

blokey··on Apple’s Mac security is so good, it’s sending used M1 MacBooks to the scrap heap
Just an idea, but, I remember something about T2 macs, and the find my integration and if you put the device into “lost mode” on the web, it sets a (numeric) firmware password as part of the ‘mark as lost’ process.

I think that overrides any user set firmware password, so might allow you to recover it,

Just a thought maybe a little searching can validate it before you might try?

No, it’s even in the name of the feature. Activation Lock.

It is to stop devices being stolen, wiped and re-sold. It is an attempt to allow the legal owner of the device the ability to control who can use it, rather than the possessor of the device having full control who can use it.

Its only purpose is to protect the use of the device by people removing all the software (erasing back to factory defaults) and taking control of the physical device that way.

blokey··on Apple Music Sing: Is this the dream karaoke machine?
Unlikely blocked by Apple, more likely same place as Airplay 2 support. Not bothered to be done by Spotify.
blokey··on Apple introduces end-to-end encryption for backups
Use FaceID or TouchID, that’s kind of their purpose!
blokey··on How the iPhone Ruins Walking
Not sure you may understand what legal tender is........

No-one is forced to accept cash in the UK, not even government services, all it means if you owe someone money and you offer to pay them with “legal tender”, whilst they can refuse, they cannot sue you for not paying.

And that’s it!

blokey··on Technical reasons to choose FreeBSD over GNU/Linux (2020)
I think you might be 100% incorrect with your supposition on businesses and BSD licensing!

Businesses love BSD licenses, because they can use the code for any purpose they need, whether internal use or building something and distributing it. No one can force them to share any part of their work, or even share anything.

Netflix, Juniper, Apple (and many others) all use BSD derived UNIX components, precisely for that. They contribute back what they want (and mainly what they do jot wish to maintain as a company secret).

GPL-3 is much more complex because it can /require/ you to share code. BSD licenses do not require you to share anything.

Businesses in general do not like ‘requirements’ like that even if only because they have to track them and ensure they do not break any licenses.

I work for a large financial services company, GPL-3 licensed software requires specific approval, AGPL is banned across the board (same as in Google). BSD and GPL-2 is fully permitted (as is MIT and all the other style licenses)

blokey··on Mordon, the email app we are building for those who want to get more done
I'm not sure the purpose of this, you seem to have combined email with Trello and have a truck-load of white space in the screenshot showing the information density to be quite low.

Looks to be a tad spammy submission, zero effort.

So, for me, hard pass, sorry.

blokey··on An Ode to Apple’s Hide My Email
In iOS and macOS mail.app, you can select the from name in the compose sheet and the option to autogenerate and random email address using “Hide My Email”.

Not totally intuitive but pretty decent.

blokey··on Atlassian products have been down for 4 days
You can self-host, that’s the data center versions.

Upside, it’s the same code just difference license file, and it enables clustering (plus lots of other artificially limited features)

Downside, it’s a subscription license and it’s insanely expensive.
