bitwrangler··on MicroPython officially becomes part of the Arduino ecosystem
The title really should read:

"...officially supported by..." instead of "...officially becomes part of..."

bitwrangler··on Over 16k people still use a Pebble smartwatch
There are many You-tube videos showing step by step. If you're slightly handy with small screws it's not hard. I've replaced my Samsung battery twice over the years. Look into it before you cast doubt and lose hope.
bitwrangler··on Ask HN: Carrier “lost” my number in a port request
what is a good source for this data? their terms stipulate against scraping, but I'm curious if there is an authentic "open" source for the raw data?
bitwrangler··on PostgreSQL 15
I've heard a saying "just say no to dot oh" -- encouraging one to skip the .0 release and wait until .1 or .2 before doing the upgrade.
bitwrangler··on Quiet Quitting
How about "quiet working" instead of quitting?
bitwrangler··on Hacking Reolink cameras for fun and profit (2020)
I really enjoyed reading this, especially the little branches off into other useful topics and tools. Here are my notes as a summary:

Good blog write up about reversing Reolink B800 IP camera end result: https://github.com/thirtythreeforty/neolink

tools used:

* wireshark & dissector in Lua https://mika-s.github.io/wireshark/lua/dissector/2017/11/04/...

* binwalk

* visualize the BIN for blank space, code, etc. https://binvis.io/#/

* buildroot to make custom: gdbserver, busybox with all the fixin’s, and strace

* disassemble / decompile MIPS with https://ghidra-sre.org/

* using tcpsvd as tcp wrapper for FTPD in custom image

* quick setup env with "expect" script: https://www.thirtythreeforty.net/posts/2020/05/hacking-reoli...

* using gdb Dynamic Print commands to target certain functions. The dynamic printf command dprintf combines a breakpoint with formatted printing of your program’s data to give you the effect of inserting printf calls into your program on-the-fly, without having to recompile it. https://doc.ecoscentric.com/gnutools/doc/gdb/Dynamic-Printf....

* busybox has a watchdog minder, used like: watchdog /dev/watchdog

* background info on Baichuan protocol

* wrote new client software in Rust. https://github.com/thirtythreeforty/neolink/blob/master/src/...

* Gstreamer with RTSP server (in Rust!)

* using it with Blue Iris nvr software

bitwrangler··on Digital Caliper Pinouts (2010)
There's a lot of good hacks using these digital calipers as sensors with Arduino and Rasperry Pi.

bitwrangler··on The 'Quiet Quitting' Phenomenon
I appreciate the nod to the prophetic movie Office Space, but I think they missed the most appropriate scene about wearing the minimum pieces of flair.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F7SNEdjftno

If people are doing the minimum work required by their employer, it hardly seems like a problem to me. If they decide to miss out on the "rat race" then that's how they choose to participate in their employee relationship. Maybe I'm missing something about this.

bitwrangler··on Large scale Internet SSH brute force attacks seem to have stopped here
Was it actually the provider scanning, or just a compromised VPS host using that same provider?

It does seem proactive to scan customers' hosts then notify them if exploits are found.

bitwrangler··on Class action against Oracle’s worldwide surveillance machine
Many people don't realize that Larry started with CIA and they were his first customer. Maybe his endgame is related to his beginning.

bitwrangler··on A plain-text file format for todos and check lists
I like that specification. I've used something similar for many years. I code my task list into a text file using a single character to show status:

. This is a pending/idle task item, and normal priority
_ Task is pending/idle, and low priority (the "someday" tasks)
! This is a pending/idle task item, and high priority (fix today/soon)
   * Currently working on this item
   # Task was completed
   X Task was cancelled
   > Task is delayed/deferred, waiting until later time
Z Task is sleeping, waiting for some dependency

I also tend to code year/month after the symbol like 2022/08 (not shown in the listed examples)

By keeping a single char in the first line, I can easily grep and sort tasks to make sense of things. I know it's very crude, but it works well for my purposes. I welcome any suggestions or improvements

(edit: formatting)

bitwrangler··on Sudden increase in number of mid-air diversions to Hawaii
I think this post is referencing a joke from the movie Airplane! https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0080339/
bitwrangler··on How to make fermented hot sauce (2021)
mostly to avoid any iodine which could interfere with the fermentation process. I suppose one could use pickling salt too. Maybe regular table salt is fine, but that's what I use since I keep it on hand.
bitwrangler··on How to make fermented hot sauce (2021)
I would suggest using a kitchen scale to weight the food (minus the container weight) and then add in the 3% of salt (or whatever percent you want). Using the scale made all the difference for me with getting the consistency and flavor. good luck!
bitwrangler··on How to make fermented hot sauce (2021)
I make sauerkraut in an old clear Costco nut container, the kind with the large mouth on top and a threaded lid. Any plastic container with a large lid works.

On a kitchen scale, place the container and then reset tare weight to zero out. Add cabbage previously chopped using a food processor, then add a little (about 1/4 cup) spring water (not tap water) and stir in 3% by weight of kosher salt. Leave it on the counter for two weeks and release the lid some to let out gas. Use clean spoon and stir it a couple times over the two weeks to keep it mixed. The bright green cabbage turns more tan, then move it into the fridge.

Toss it onto some on salads or sandwiches, etc. It is one of the easiest healthy yummy things to make.

bitwrangler··on Tell HN: Godaddy canceled my domain, gave me 2h to respond, then charged €150
I've only recently been using Cloudflare and noticed they do registrar and DNS hosting, I might transfer to them later if it's worth the hassle. I'm currently using namecheap.

bitwrangler··on Tell HN: Godaddy canceled my domain, gave me 2h to respond, then charged €150
I transferred from GoDaddy a few years back. I got tired of the constant attempts to up-sell me for services I didn't want. I went to namecheap and have been happy with their services so far. The UI is clear and pretty easy to use. They also support MFA for added security (GoDaddy did not at that time).

I've been playing with cloudflare recently, and just realized they also do domain registration and DNS hosting. I might seriously look at switching to them depending on hassle and potential benefit. But I usually like having dedicated registrar/DNS that is uncoupled from hosting.

bitwrangler··on Firefox rolls out Total Cookie Protection by default to all users
Yes, I think there are some cases where a user might want to opt-in and allow cookies to be shared across a specific set of domains. The main reason I could think of it to allow cross-site business integration to continue to work as (currently) designed.
bitwrangler··on Firefox rolls out Total Cookie Protection by default to all users
I use multi-account containers too, and I like it. This is exactly my point, instead of mapping each domain into a single container, any domain could exist in one or more "trusted tuples"

Maybe another way to think of it is like a one-to-many join. A domain would not "belong" to a single container, but have tags to associate with 1+ containers.

bitwrangler··on Firefox rolls out Total Cookie Protection by default to all users
It would be nice to allow users to create "trusted tuples" to list small groups of domains that are allowed to share their cookies. For instance: Zendesk, Asana, Jira, etc.

But have each tuple listed still be isolated from the other, only domains listed together in a single list could share a cookie container.
