biehl··on Day ahead electricity prices for EU
Denmark is going to have some pretty cheap hours around 13:00, so charging an electric car is not going to be bad tomorrow.
biehl··on LWN Is Hiring
Yay. More great content.

Maybe something on all the exciting starting to be available with coreboot?

biehl··on Ask HN: The case for middle men in freelancing, do agents exist?
Same in Denmark.
biehl··on Ask HN: What is a modern Java environment?
Spring Boot is the go-to solution for Java where I work. And definitely Intellij as IDE.
biehl··on CodeEdit: Building a free, open-source code editor for macOS
Looks very nice.

Is it nicer to install it from the AppStore or from homebrew, I wonder?

biehl··on The Politics of “Ukraine” versus “The Ukraine”
A pretty interesting explanation. I had never thought of the distinction - Danish seems to have roughly the same principle as English.
biehl··on Apple: Design Macs for Other Types of Professionals
I was worried about the lack of cellular connectivity on my new Macbook Pro, but I am happy to find that working off wifi (eg. in the train) works pretty seamlessly just with my iPhone in my pocket. I would still love to have it built into the Macbook, but I guess that it is less urgent than I feared.
biehl··on Java BitSet performance-flicker mystery
How do you calculate the time?

Windows had famously low timer resolution on java for a while. What happens if you run each round for increasingly longer periods?

biehl··on Framework Raises $18M Series A
Maybe a next step could be a router like https://eu.protectli.com/product/fw6e/ ?

Protectli is very nice, but the area could use a push forward.

biehl··on Over 10% of Tesla Model S EVs Fail Germany’s Strict Inspection After 3 Years
No, in Denmark at least it is 2 months for Model Y, and 6 months for Enyaq.
biehl··on Over 10% of Tesla Model S EVs Fail Germany’s Strict Inspection After 3 Years
Well, I have been waiting 6+ months for my Enyaq now, I could have had a Model Y well before… this leaves me not that worried for my Tesla shares…
biehl··on As a software developer, you may be called upon to perform some of these tasks
No, the tasks are very realistic. I think the idea is to consider if your junior developers are prepared for the tasks (or if you as a junior developer, are).
biehl··on Marktext – Elegant Markdown Editor for Linux, macOS, Windows
Wow. That looks really lovely!
biehl··on Ask HN: What's your ideal city in a 100% remote world?
Copenhagen is great. Barcelona was great too. Lisbon looks very nice too. I imagine it like a slighly smaller and less expensive Barcelona.
biehl··on Pandora papers: biggest leak of offshore data exposes financial secrets of rich
On the other hand, when the attention of the middleground people is on exactly the aspect of the concept that one wishes to highligt, then that seems like the right time to highligt.

Tax-evasion done by money-transfers based on fictional value attributions of something. Seems exactly like "imaginary property" to me.

biehl··on World's biggest wind turbine shows the disproportionate power of scale
From the same place you get power when your nuclear powerplant is offline for maintenance?
biehl··on What do insanely wealthy people buy, that ordinary people know nothing about?
Political influence?
biehl··on Death by Pokémon Go: The costs of using apps while driving (2017)
It tries to dis-engage when it detects the phone moving faster than walking speed. But it is not perfect.
biehl··on How M1 Macs feel faster than Intel models: it’s about QoS
Native support in the regular builds will arrive in september

biehl··on Parents of daughters are more likely to divorce than those with sons
From my time as a school teacher substitute in Denmark my experience is that 12-14 (7th and 8th grade) is the worst.
biehl··on Show HN: DevUtils.app – Developer Utilities for macOS
What would you think about a homebrew recipe that builds from source? Good or bad?
biehl··on The Product-Minded Software Engineer
Maybe I understand what you are referring to.

If you are hired in a “plain” engineering position it can be difficult to break out as a product engineer. Are you allowed to talk to customers? Is your time zealously measured?

I’ve tried in different projects with varying degrees of success. Fortunately with full success currently.

It would probably be interesting to analyse and write notes on “how to go from plain engineering to product engineering in friendly, neutral and hostile environments”.

biehl··on SQL Performance Explained, the tuning book for developers, is free today
Thanks
biehl··on Fossil fuel divestment has ‘zero’ climate impact, says Bill Gates
Divestment is a practical prerequisite for effective regulation of fossil fuel companies.

Right now tough regulations will directly hurt pensioners with pensions invested in fossil fuel companies. After divestment will not hurt those people in the same direct way.

So:

Step 1) - Divest

Step 2) - Regulate to fully compensate for externalities caused by fossil fuel companies without worry of collateral damage

biehl··on Megapack: Utility-Scale Energy Storage
Minimum in what situation? At what price level?
biehl··on A software engineering manager guide to measuring an engineer’s performance
Right. But sometimes this clashes with new developers expectation of actually being able to produce an acceptable solution and getting it merged within a reasonable amount of time.

Have those expectations never clashed for you?

biehl··on Who Is Telling the Truth About Prescription Opioid Deaths?
Yes. And even if it was sensible article with a solid purpose (it is not), that does not change the basic reputation of ACSH.
biehl··on Who Is Telling the Truth About Prescription Opioid Deaths?
> But, err, yeah, let's write off anyone who sees this as a pro-pharma shill...

ACSH does not seem like “anyone” but rather a documented pro-any-paying-industry-shill...

biehl··on Tyndall F-22s, Left Behind Before Michael Hit, Possibly Damaged Beyond Repair
One cannot put an F-22 on a truck and drive it to safety?
