>Interstate highway system, electrical grid, internet, etc. all fall very cleanly into that bucket

Insurance is another highly networked product that benefits from monopoly

The insurance companies of the 19th and 20th centuries were boons to society because their local buckets of money could be invested in local businesses and spent (practically as a donation) on advertising at the minor league baseball diamond or the church bulletin

The sooner we mitigate the loss of those good effects, the sooner We can benefit from the efficiency of insurance monopolies whose risk pools will be as large as is practicable rather than driven by historical accidents

Before the movement of peoples accelerated greatly in the mid 20th century, identity was determined by a few factors and they were practically constitutive of who people were

Think about the adhoc communal living options that are available to people who want to live in intentional community in SF, consider side by side people like conservative Mennonite churchgoers in rural Illinois.

The idea is not that anyone can or should pull an L Ron, the point is that those identity factors are more or less taken to be extraneous of someone's behavior

They are default bad reasons to ban someone, not an exhaustive list, just good rules of thumb

bgilroy26··on We need legal controls on web advertising
There is an honest need in here, to surface unknown unknowns within the world's of consumer producta/services. It could be solved by a trade show/business fair kind of thing (maybe we would know we had solved it when B2C looked like B2B)

The thing is, advertising does not efficiently suggest products/services now, so the idea that removing it would hurt customers ability to find what they want is a little melodramatic

Thank you for your help, your time, and your consideration

As I was writing this out, I recognized that the tweets from the accounts on the list I started when I hit the cap are all viewable just by visiting the list

That idea already makes my foot stomping a little petulant, but your idea makes it even easier

I just need a history account, an activism account, a computers/networks/engineering account, a Christianity account, a movie/TV/literature criticism account, an immunology/epidemiology/public health/virology account

Those are my social media consumption workstreams more or less and I could grow each of those to 1-2k pretty quickly but my rate of follows would taper off and it would take a while to hit 5k on each, maybe another decade who knows?

There was an internal group to Twitter that reviewed the policy last year and they dated the policy page that way

They'll probably review it again some time before 2028

I was gunning for a Plotinus-stanning All is One account but I suppose that doesn't fit the current climate

This is awesome! I already see several topics that I am very keen to hear a solid take about what direction the current literature should head in

But more importantly, this is such a humane approach to sharing knowledge because these people are all devoted enough to these subjects to have written dozens of supervised pages that they would stake their own futures on

That is a very worthy criterion to decide who to listen to

Hello,

Based on your writing, it seems you have a level head and a good angle on world history

I am hoping that if you have any books that deal in the history east of present day Germany, present day Italy, and or south of Madrid (directly/indirectly) that you really liked or found especially engaging or informative that you might remember and graciously share what they were if it pleases you to do so.

I am at a point where I am starting to appreciate what I am "rooting for" in western Asia/northern Africa which was a step in my study of northern/western barbarian history (frankish, gaulish, Norse etc etc) that made everything more fun and interesting to learn and therefore easier for me to study and accumulate interesting information

Because you seem very reasonable, I am thinking if you liked any of those direct/indirect history books that I might like them too

If you read this comment, thank you for your time and attention. I hope that you and your loved ones are doing okay in these difficult times.

bgilroy26··on Modern mathematics emerged from “The House of Wisdom” in the 13th century
Any sufficiently large group activity can become analogous to the family

Sharing a government of a country, a university president, an artistic director of a theatre, a religious leader or council of elders, a chief executive officer, the heads of a political party or mvmt, author of a media IP with a fandom, leader of a reinterpretation of an artistic work that has its own following

All of these things create little societies that are smaller than all of humanity. These all are modeled off of family dynamics and to minister over them requires the community toown their own language the languages which leads naturally to the Tower of Babel problem.

The Tower of Babel problem which is that translation of language/dialect/accent/jargon from one group to another is cognitively taxing and anticipation of that work makes us angry/despairing on an emotional level

If everyone understood that these groups were different expressions of the same format we could all work together and the laws could be much simpler in one respect and more complicated in others (eg banning discrimination on the basis of race/creed/ethnicity/nation of origin/gender/age could remove the inexhaustible list of possibal tribal categories but they'd need to add some kind of Code of Conduct like a programming language has to handle their conferences and email groups)

bgilroy26··on DoorDash S-1
I agree with you.

I think in a world where people made enough money to eat and we didn't outlaw the stupid penny, we could keep all the pennies and offer them to people as tokens of our appreciation, then it's operating as a symbol and the emotional purpose is served without people who don't want to tip feeling expected to support people's lives all of the sudden at the end of the meal.

Our current system makes thoughtful, considerate people feel guilty if they don't want to tip deep down but feel they ought to.

Steve Martin's My Blue Heaven deals with the problem of wanting to express gratitude and joy to people in a world where everything is officious and transactional

bgilroy26··on DoorDash S-1
People who hate tipping should run for public office, I swear. Damn Kantians!

You don't get to act as though your behavior is a categorical imperative if you don't participate in writing laws that make such imperatives a reality. You do not live as Robinson Crusoe, Chuck Noland, or even Richard Hatch did.

"Categorical imperative" is just a bad translation of "Law" which is a perfectly cromulent word.

There is always a war on when property is not democratized. In the Anglophone world, the easiest example to think of is enclosure[1] which was a war between the mercantile class on one side and the lazier half of the lords and the little people on the other.

If any company, be they Google, be they Apple, should experience total "victory" in the war on intellectual property they would find everyone who is not

  * An investor
  * In management
  * An employee
  * A temp/contractor, or
  * A happy customer
Set against them and they would fall. Imagine there was a neural network or network of neural networks that could arrange bits into entertaining movies. It would print money and it would not be strategic for whatever company had the resources to do that to hoard the benefits, they would have no customers if they did (I suppose if they had enough compute and memory resources to succeed in such a task they might already have a monopoly on money).

I used to understand the CEO's job as cheerleader, for the investors, for the employees. I still think that is how they operate tactically, but strategically, I think the goal of a CEO in a Obama-era neo-liberal is to put the whole world in one of those categories above I suppose, with the acceptable additions of

  * Vendor/supplier
  * Companies in partnership
  * Competitors who participate in a trade association together in a reasonably civil manner, or
  * Members of government who are lobbied to advocate for your firm or industry or a strategic need that you hold in common with the broader public
In the long run the alternative is to perish. Utopia I think may have been inevitable by the 50s/60s when people started to believe that some companies really would last forever. On a long enough time scale, it is best to do everything in everyone's best interest considered in toto.

So all of that to say that I expect one day, maybe 40 years from now, maybe 80, that IP as it operates today will be transformed into an index of ideas that everyone can take and implement who might put them to use beneficially for the citizenry and other residents. It will be nice after all of that work to have a primary key for the ideas that have been created so far, so I don't think we the people will burn down the USPTO or the LOC or anything like that.

I was puzzled by your phrase "can't rhyme off". Google returns very few instances that are not related to spontaneous spoken word poetry (which is likely an example of convergent evolution). After poking around a bit, it seemed as though I had heard a similar phrase before "try (to|and) rhyme off" in which 'rhyme' is synonymous with 'to list' as well

Best wishes for yourself, your friends and your family during these uncertain times!

They wouldn't, you're right. We will not see the NYSE shuttered in the next 4 years or Amazon's excess of revenue over expenses taxed at 100% and their money bags driven across the country in armored trucks and heaved into Elizabeth Warren's US Treasury as a result of this election.

On the other hand, despite the fact that my tongue was firmly planted in my cheek when I wrote it, such Debbie Wasserman Schultz haters as Nathan J Robinson and Noam Chomsky have adopted the 'Vote for Biden and keep protesting' angle so who's to say how the real socialists are voting this year?

Science cannot be abstracted from language. Whitehead and Bertrand Russell, Gottlob Frege, David Hilbert all operated under the idea that you might one day and you really can't.

The movie Arrival (2016) explores a truly inter cultural exchange and they convincingly envisioned it being very experiential, very tactile and detailed, concrete and lived. A truly intercultural dialogue would be very personal and particular

Abstractions are very useful, but mostly as a shorthand or a design framework for ourselves. That's why we speak English here instead of Esperanto

bgilroy26··on Looking Back on the Spanish War (1942)
1984 grew directly out of Orwells experience in the war. POUM and Andreu Nin Perez and Leon Trotsky's treatment at the hands of Stalin and the ComIntern were very disheartening for him

1984 is very difficult to map directly on to US politics because liberal/neoliberal capture of the universities and mainstream journalism are kindof total the way that American conservatives allege, but also George Blair hoped that figures like Trotsky of the Red Army and Perez of the POUM would win out in the end

Orwell would not have been friends with the pepper Christian homeschooler, the glad-handing inside dealing Mar a Lago member, the little local lord like the area car dealership owner, the conspiracy theorist YouTuber, the Rad Trad anti Vatican II syncretist, those supremely Trumpist figures.

You kindof have to visit with George the man, his actions, and his times to understand his story. But that tends to muck up any chance to put him to use purely for your side.

(He was a socialist though, til the day he died, so he'd be voting Biden were he here in Wisconsin right now : P)

People online should know that George Soros is a capitalist who loves Karl Popper and named his foundation after the Open Society. Trumpism is breaking apart the Reagan coalition of economic liberalizers and social conservatives. George Soros would have been part of the Reagan coalition, but Trump feeds resentment that economic liberalizers in the 80s, 90s, and 2000s forced social conservatives to take the shorter end of the stick. A lot of people online think Soros & his foundation are purely for identity politics, but he's more of a Popper partisan than anything else.

bgilroy26··on Never attribute to stupidity what is adequately explained by opportunity cost
This is a huge opportunity. It would serve a great need to create a structured, low-pressure activity for potential business partners to participate in as they socialize over video chat.

Given the potential to democratize socializing to form business partnerships, it would catch on all on its own as a way to be inclusive during the pandemic in a way that golf never was.

Semi-related, I was reading a sociological research paper by Irving Crespi about playing cards in Endicott, NY and in his conclusion, he speculates that people used the structure of playing bridge or what have you in order to more easily tolerate each other's company. He was trying to explain why most card players weren't gambling seriously and I think he was right about structured activities providing a social lubricant analogous to alcohol.

Perhaps the eu-social aid of structured activity is even stronger than alcohol because we're given a detailed script to play out and distract ourselves instead of simply taking the edge off of our ability to waste energy over analyzing the social situation.
