bgilroy26··on JetBrains reported a net financial loss first time in its tracked history
This financial loss is a report at a point in time about that point in time. A company's valuation is also reported at a point in time but it represents an aggregation of how much profit the company might generate across time (please forgive the layman's understanding). They are apples and oranges.

The biggest obstacles to Chinese vehicle sales in the United States are political and they are tremendous. Whichever party is blamed for their entry will lose Michigan for a generation and car dealership owners across the country

bgilroy26··on On Really Trying (2009)
If you are considered to be rich in terms of ways and means and generous of spirit as well, you really have it made in the shade. Traditionally speaking.
bgilroy26··on On Really Trying (2009)
It's funny you should turn the conversation to literature

I felt very seen when I read this story of Nathaniel Hawthorne's https://www.classicshorts.com/stories/ebrand.html

It's about a man who left home on a journey because something was bothering him and he didn't stop investigating until he figured out what it was.

It turned out (spoilers!) that he regarded his fellow men at an arm's length. He saw himself apart

I am of that kind and it causes me great pain. If I'm reading you right it seems you feel yourself in the thick of it with everyone. I hope you do not take that feeling for granted

bgilroy26··on On Really Trying (2009)
Once you've made it this far, the new spectrum everyone is measured on is their magnanimity.

It's okay that you didn't turn out to be that magnanimous, but don't lie to yourself and pretend that you tried as hard as you could

You had more in your humanity tank than you knew you had

bgilroy26··on I-have-ADHD: A skill to stop coding agents from burying the answer

bgilroy26··on Building an (almost) fully self-hosted, sandboxed, agentic software factory
It's really funny. I would read HN headlines about PhD research in the area of https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Correctness_(computer_science) and it always seemed really boring

bgilroy26··on Not hiring junior engineers won't solve the problem you think you have
This approach accumulates codebase-understanding debt and the call to pay the piper could come at any time

>The phrase appeared in print in the 1885 biography of the noted swindler Joseph "Hungry Joe" Lewis, "King of the Bunco Men". The author writes:

It seems like there is a genuine communication breakdown between management and engineering. Engineers know that there are vulnerabilities all over the place and that there have been for ages and that where the rubber hits the road every vulnerability does not represent a successful exploit by some nefarious actor.

Management can often treat cybersecurity like a black box that represents millions upon millions in liability. If Mythos represents an opportunity to bring management's understanding of the amount of "security vulnerability debt" everyone carries into the real world, it might be a good thing

bgilroy26··on What physical ‘life force’ turns biology’s wheels?
For those who remember, the flagellum was a major site of the Intelligent Design debate that gave us Christopher Rufo (via the Discovery Institute)

The general idea was that there were specific examples of "irreducible complexity" that proved that there was an intelligent designer. The project on the part of certain Christian political factions was to add a veneer of hypothesis testing to creationism. The god of the gaps retreats further

Society is kinetic and disparate because of social media

We're all on top of one another, and different cross tabs feel different ways about the same thing. So there is room for empathy and antipathy to coexist

If you read the New York Times and The Atlantic there is lots of empathy for the male loneliness crisis

I am in between the age of you and your son it seems. As a man who has not missed any of the "misandry", I think the overly online conservative young men are an embarrassment and I hope they grow out of it
