bfors··on What's new in Emacs 31.1
awesome, I was looking for a libghostty emacs terminal about a month ago. vterm just does not cut it for me.
bfors··on The lost joy of music piracy
I loved the forums as well, being an invite only music piracy site turned out to be a pretty good foundation for a community. My posts however, were definitely not very high quality.
bfors··on Apple to soon take up to 30% cut from all Patreon creators in iOS app
So how do I avoid apple taking the cut? Unsubscribe from people in my ios app and resubscribe on the web? I subscribe to super small creators where this 30% cut makes a meaningful difference.
bfors··on 30 Year Anniversary of WarCraft II: Tides of Darkness
This game lead me down a path that resulted in me becoming a software engineer. Good game.
bfors··on Why I love OCaml (2023)
They also build custom emacs tooling
bfors··on Beets: The music geek’s media organizer
Wow, I remember beets from about 10 years ago. I never got into meticulously organizing my music, but I'm glad to see it's still around. Also the site loaded absolutely ridiculously fast.
bfors··on An illustrated introduction to linear algebra
Thank you, I'm planning on diving into linear algebra as an exercise to mitigate brain rot
bfors··on OpenTelemetry collector: What it is, when you need it, and when you don't
I happen to work with otel a lot so I'll offer a few of my thoughts:

- Consider decoupling your collector from whatever is consuming your traces with something like kafka. Traces can be pretty heavy and it can be tricky to scale collectors. If something goes down, it's probably a good idea to continue writing the traces to queue or topic.

- https://www.otelbin.io is a nice little tool to help with collector configuration

bfors··on Emacs as your video-trimming tool
How are you integrating with things like HN or your browser history?
bfors··on DeskHog, an open-source developer toy
This is probably the one I would get - https://protadesigns.com/ It looks great, and also I appreciate that it's a one man operation
bfors··on By default, Signal doesn't recall
My company now blocks signal.org, it must be a nefarious tool meant for ill intent.
bfors··on Stoop Coffee: A simple idea transformed my neighborhood
In my situation they would probably not respond, and then submit a complaint through the HOA
bfors··on Mistral OCR
Perhaps they already evaluated their LLM judge model (with another LLM)
bfors··on Ggwave: Tiny Data-over-Sound Library
Very cool solution!
bfors··on Show HN: Konga Beat – A custom track editor for Donkey Konga 2 and 3
Are folks generally using CRTs or is it common to use a newer upscaling approach?
bfors··on How we built ngrok's data platform
Could you speak to how you're interfacing scala with flink? I looked into using scala with flink a while back, and stopped when I found out that the scala API was deprecated.
bfors··on Ask HN: Every day feels like prison
Contribute to something bigger than yourself and you'll start to forget about the middle class mind prison you feel like you're trapped in. Random example: help to build low cost housing via habitat for humanity. Also accept that a big part of life is simply a shit sandwich, so I recommend finding a way to not be so serious and maybe even find humor in it. Anyways, I'm late to my standup.
bfors··on Male dance moves that catch a woman's eye (2010)
Turns out my trunk abduction/adduction movement amplitude has been wildly insufficient this whole time... you could have told me this sooner guys.
bfors··on Emacs used as a message router in Germany's ATC systems in the 1990s (2021)
I had a moment where I considered switching to emacs when reading that section. Would love to see the workflow of one of the devs from that time.
bfors··on Make timelapses easily using FFmpeg
I would argue that ffmpeg has the hardest to understand interface in the video editing space (unless you can find a command someone else came up with that does exactly what you want)
bfors··on Jepsen: Datomic Pro 1.0.7075
For those who aren't aware, the name Jepsen is a play on Carly Rae Jepsen, singer behind "call me maybe". In my opinion a perfect name for a distributed systems research effort.
bfors··on Leaving Rust gamedev after 3 years
Like the author states, the "written in Rust" bonus many projects get does not apply to games. Most of the games I consider to be the most fun are built on an absolute rats nest dumpster fire of code (see: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k238XpMMn38). Sometimes bugs even expand game mechanics and make them more fun and expressive. That being said I'll definitely check out Unrelaxing Quacks, it looks great.
bfors··on Open Sourcing DOS 4
Looking at this code is a nice reminder that I have virtually no real understanding of how computers work, and every part I work with is a nice polished abstraction that hides 99% of the complexity involved in actually creating value with a computer.
bfors··on Cloudflare Makes Pingora Rust Framework Open-Source
Out of curiosity what do you find lacking in nginx?
bfors··on Collision Detection (2015)
Amazing. How did you create the animation of the quake level getting broken down into BSP nodes?
bfors··on Fly through your shell history
For any of the shell history solutions out there (myfly, atuin, fzf) is there a way to filter out commands that failed or had incorrect syntax? In my history there are ... a lot of those. Not that useful to have them hanging around.
bfors··on Data Engineering Design Patterns
Could be interesting once there's more content, in its current state the content is mostly just definitions.
bfors··on Freetar – an alternative front end for ultimate-guitar.com
Wow, what a perfect website
bfors··on 15-150: Principles of Functional Programming
I feel like F#'s commercial viability over other more computer sciencey FP languages is actually kind of a downside, from a "vibe" perspective. It seems like CS folks are not generally very interested in moving more towards the software engineering end of the discipline. Which is fair, because they are different things.
bfors··on Privacy is priceless, but Signal is expensive
That's too bad. I'm surprised they have that much internal process for the desktop app. Using the app, it really feels like it's an afterthought.
