benwikler··on How Silica Gel Took Over the World
Ah, seeing that (apparently like-minded amiga386) came here to post the same thing: https://onegianthand.com/post/188730414621/silica-gel

benwikler··on Inflection AI launches pi chatbot
This is excellent! Beautifully simple interface. Took me a minute to realize I could start typing without seeing a blinking cursor.

In case you think NeRFs don't have any useful applications
benwikler··on Imagen, a text-to-image diffusion model
Totally—Imagen seems better at composition and relative positioning and text, while DALL-E seems better at lighting, backgrounds, and general artistry.
benwikler··on Imagen, a text-to-image diffusion model
Would be fascinated to see the DALL-E output for the same prompts as the ones used in this paper. If you've got DALL-E access and can try a few, please put links as replies!
benwikler··on Someone should probably start a bright home lighting company (2019)
So... has anyone actually started a company to do this? I'd be a very interested customer. (Comment written from a basement office lit unsatisfactorily by cheap photography studio lights)

BTW: unroll.me's parent company Slice has the exact same business model.
benwikler··on SecureDrop – An open-source whistleblower submission system
RIP Aaron Swartz, who originally built this. He'd be 30 now.
benwikler··on Scientists Discover Efficient Process to Turn CO2 into Ethanol
So basically: this is nice, but there's no reason yet to think that this could be the way we slurp carbon out of the atmosphere and avert climate catastrophe. Right? Drat.
benwikler··on Tell HN: Today is the last day to apply to Y Combinator
Yep, people (I) do. Or try to.
benwikler··on This.cm is shutting down
This. was a public service. Sad to see it go.
benwikler··on Show HN: Papier – Open a new tab and trap your best thoughts
My use case: I use Papier to write down the single thing I'm (trying to) work on. That way if I idly open a tab in order to start getting distracted, I have a reminder of my actual top priority staring back at me. Magic.
benwikler··on Magic
My baby daughter is five days overdue. My three-year-old son keeps asking when he'll be a big brother. And my wife and I are trying to figure out how we'll do the grocery shopping—or even focus on a computer screen long enough to shop online—once we're juggling two kids. When I told my wife about Magic, she visibly relaxed. This service has huge, huge potential.
benwikler··on Ask HN: What is the percent of the Kickstarter backer pledge cancellation?
Two out of 1044. Eight people also decreased their pledges after we hit our goal, which took me aback for a moment—before it made me retroactively extra grateful that people had given beyond their comfort zone just to help me cross the finish line.
benwikler··on Ask HN: What is the percent of the Kickstarter backer pledge cancellation?
Six days since the end of my project (tgf.fm/ks), 15 of my 1044 backers haven't gone through. I think a bunch have fixed credit card errors over the last week. Three of the nine biggest pledges had their cards declined, likely because of the giant charge to an unfamiliar vendor—but those folks have been in touch directly to resolve the issue.
benwikler··on How to honor Aaron Swartz's life
Thank you!
benwikler··on Ask HN: Is anyone successful with the 7-minute workout so far?
I've been doing it most days for the last six weeks, and I love it.

benwikler··on Tell HN: My Brother Died Last Week. His Death Will Not Be In Vain
EMRo, I'm so so sorry about your loss and your family's loss. Thank you for writing about it. Please take care of yourself as well—and let others take care of you. Grief lasts a lifetime, but it won't always hurt as acutely as it does now. Along the way, you might find some of this helpful; I know I do. http://quinnnorton.com/revived/tips.html

benwikler··on Ask HN: Which daily habit has affected your productivity the most?
The biggest moment for me was when I started thinking about productivity (or its absence) as a matter of willpower, and started to think strategically about how to make it easy. It's still a struggle to think that way: it seems like you should be able to grit your teeth, roll up your sleeves, and become productive. But that's not really how our brains work. Not mine, at least. For me, after that mindset shift, the most valuable strategies have been creating early external deadlines, drafting in longhand or into a voice recorder—and, above all and whenever possible, working closely with awesome collaborators rather than alone.
benwikler··on Loom (YC W12) Launching Cloud Storage for Photos and Videos
Any chance Leopard support could be on the roadmap? Part of what makes Loom so exciting is the chance to get my photos un-confusingly off of older computers, so I was disappointed not to be able to install it on a 2006 MBP. Thanks!
benwikler··on Loom (YC W12) Launching Cloud Storage for Photos and Videos
So, what's the main difference between Loom and Everpix?
benwikler··on Everpix
Very excited that this is a) awesome and b) still exists. Contrast with Gush, which was announced with fanfare with similar goals in 2011 (http://techcrunch.com/2011/09/28/jesta-labs-hatches-gush-fet...).

On the website (http://getgush.com/), these words appear: "Thank you so much for trying Gush and working with us as we tested this concept. We have decided to not move forward with this project. As promised we will delete all of your data from our service and be shutting it down this week. Please uninstall any uploaders you have as they will stop working.  We hope you enjoyed trying Gush."

Nothing beside remains. Round the decay Of that colossal wreck, boundless and bare The lone and level web stretches far away.
