Ha! Exactly that. Never seen that before :)
bennysonething··on There was nothing “wasted” about my youth spent clubbing on ecstasy (2021)
The thing that never worked for me in school was messaging like "drugs will kill you". Well yes that's true. But drugs are way more insidious than this. In my experience they are subtle in how they mess with your mind and over all well being. They take away my drive for natural highs, and natural highs are usually good things. For example exercise, accomplishments and learning. The come downs destroy free time. But worst is they seem to reset my happiness level to lower. Small things that should bring joy no longer do. Thankfully those effects have been temporary for me. I'm glad my drug use is over. I was only ever a weekend partier. Still managed to complete a degree and hold down a job. But I'm done with drugs for good.

Hrm, I'm in my 40s. I got a criminal record at 20 for being caught in a club with 3 pills. It still didn't stop me. I continued doing Es for a long time. It was good at the time but I wish I hadn't done them. It's like a lot of other drugs, once you've done it everything becomes dull without it. I used to think about them all the time. Until it got to the point were I hated them. The come downs became horrific (once you've done a lot of them, hangovers don't come close).

I was given some mdma at a festival 5 years ago. I hated it. It was strong but I hated the feeling of being out of my mind.

Mainly I think all I got out of it was a ruined short term memory and wasted time recovering from endless nights out.

I don't look back with rose tinted specs. I regret it.

bennysonething··on Ask HN: Do you hate software engineering but love programming?
What? I found their post informative and yours extremely patronising. They're not defensive about Aristotle, they are pointing that the quote seems to be misinterpreted because it's about relationships between men and woman.
bennysonething··on Woman ordered to repay employer after software shows ‘time theft’
What is an over budget file?
bennysonething··on Woman ordered to repay employer after software shows ‘time theft’
This reminds me of the British post office software debacle that sent innocent workers to prison for fraud. Software doesn't prove anything, it burden of proof should be on the prosecution to prove that the software works. Also the defence should have the right to a 3rd party audit
bennysonething··on Ask HN: What are some surprising ways to gain social status?
Possibly, but then you are now doing the same thing! Also my hacker news account is anonymous, on twitter accounts tend to be people posting as themselves. (I haven't posted on twitter before, mainly because of that).
bennysonething··on Ask HN: I'm 40 and feel my mental ability declining. Programming seems harder.
I've always felt like this. My short term memory is a bit of a mess. I blame drug abuse when I was younger. Anyway I get by with pen and paper.
bennysonething··on Ask HN: What are some surprising ways to gain social status?
Pretend to be virtuous by posting about some issue on twitter. Even better find someone to publicly shame on twitter.
bennysonething··on Functional Programming – How and Why
Biggest thing I got from functional programming: avoid state if you can.

Sometimes functional style isn't as clear (especially recursion for me). But things like map and filter are usually a lot easier for me to read than for loops.

bennysonething··on Ask HN: Concepts that clicked only years after you first encountered them?
Cultural appropriation is nonsense. Probably most of what we are is a result of cross-pollination of cultures. Who gets to decide who belongs to one group or another?
bennysonething··on Ask HN: Concepts that clicked only years after you first encountered them?
Did they actually care about crimes against humanity? I thought they were worried about the amount of power he had?
bennysonething··on Nassim Nicholas Taleb mocked Lex Fridman's 2023 book reading list
Nothing better than being publicly patronising to someone way way younger than you.

Maybe it's just me, but listening to lex, he approaches all guests with a kind of open "I don't know much, I want to hear what your have to say" type attitude, which makes this even worse. Taleb sounds like a dick.

bennysonething··on Java is in decline, and there's data to prove it
I primarily write c# for a living. What's wrong with async await in kotlin? I'd struggle to live without it in c#.
bennysonething··on I am done. I give up
True. Though anyone I know who is owns a business uses debt to grow it. But you make a fair point.
bennysonething··on Tax super-rich on private jet travel to fund public transport, says UK charity
That isn't exactly a well reasoned response. It doesn't add anything. It's just deflective personal attack.

Thanks!
bennysonething··on What happens when babies are left to cry it out?
That's a coincidence, my daughter is 3.5 years old too!

The reason I'm interested is my wife is pregnant with our second. First four months our daughter slept all the time. 5 to 11 months was an nightmare. Then it settled down and she sleeps 8 to 6.30 most nights. I think we were lucky, especially after reading what you went through!

bennysonething··on Tax super-rich on private jet travel to fund public transport, says UK charity
Hi, I'd say that's a pretty loose reading if the posting rules. Here's part of them:

What to Submit

On-Topic: Anything that good hackers would find interesting. That includes more than hacking and startups. If you had to reduce it to a sentence, the answer might be: anything that gratifies one's intellectual curiosity.

Off-Topic: Most stories about politics, or crime, or sports, unless they're evidence of some interesting new phenomenon. Videos of pratfalls or disasters, or cute animal pictures. If they'd cover it on TV news, it's probably off-topic.

bennysonething··on Tax super-rich on private jet travel to fund public transport, says UK charity
I'm not so sure about this. If it fills with non hacker type news, what is the point of hacker news?
bennysonething··on Tax super-rich on private jet travel to fund public transport, says UK charity
I don't think this should be on hacker news. It's just another political divisive article.

I've no proof but it feels like there's more and more of this type of content being posted here. Please stop.

And some work creates negative value! :)
bennysonething··on Inequality, interest rates, aging, and the role of central banks (2021)
I'd really like to understand this process. Is there a real world example of government employee adjusts a particular figure on a particular bit of software. That then somehow sends money to a particular bank?
bennysonething··on Freedom to Roam in Scotland (2019)
It applies to golf courses which I think is a bit silly. Walking on a fairway is not a good idea, and if a golf balls hits you I'm pretty certain it's the golfers fault.

I always thought theregister was written by UK staff. The new jersey reference in that article sounds like it's not. Did it change hands?
bennysonething··on Ask HN: Favorite Podcast Episodes of 2022?
It's on Spotify. And on BBC sounds. And I think it's on iTunes. You might just be able to download it for free too. It used to be available like that years ago.
