Fascinating and motivating reply. Thanks :)
bennysomething··on Quake on the Game Boy Advance [video]
What was he working on at ms? I watched a video about his snes port of doom, amazing stuff (and slightly depressing know I'll never be any where near that level).
bennysomething··on FDA approves first systemic treatment for alopecia areata
I've been on finastride for about 12 years. I'm never sure if it's working or not. Scared to stop!

How well did the hair transplant work?

bennysomething··on Scotland starts renewed case for independence
In my opinion no it's not.

The changes from brexit are minimal compared to what Scottish independence would be. Trade with UK dwarfs trade with EU. The Snp government basically buried their own economic report on the economic case for independence because there isn't one (let's see what's in the next one). Last referendum they couldn't even give a clear answer on currency as many nationalist don't want the euro (or EU for that matter).

Next up is defence, we would need to fund an army and navy etc. Given what's going with Ukraine and that russian jets regularly test our air response capability (jets scrambled from cooper airbase regularly I believe). Would we join NATO? Given what sweden and Finland are looking at I really hope so. Oh and the Snp government firmly want rid of nuclear weapons in Scotland (I'm not pro nuclear now hardly seems to be the time to disarm in northern European countries). Break up of the UK would be a huge win for Putin and loss for the west. Oh and have a read of our defence spoke persons bio:

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stewart_McDonald_(politician...

It would be funny if it wasn't so serious.

bennysomething··on Scotland starts renewed case for independence
Speaking of being misled, we were pretty much promised by the Scottish nationalists that this was a once in a generation choice. Seems we voted wrong the last time so here we are again with all the uncertainty to go with it.

Though right now I want the second referendum as it's probably the best way to end the uncertainty that SNP causing

bennysomething··on Budget Culture and the Dave Ramseyfication of Money
Well the last personal finance book I read was written of Indian descent, he spends a large part of the book joking about Indian culture around getting a good deal on a car and generally being careful with money. Money and trade isn't white culture (what ever that is).

bennysomething··on Budget Culture and the Dave Ramseyfication of Money
I read that bit and was shocked. Budgeting is a racial trait!?
bennysomething··on How I finally get daily journaling done with a workflow on my iPhone
I'm really forgetful to the point I'm starting to worry about its impact on my career. I also ruminate like hell even about things that happened in high school, constantly feeling bad about things I said, did or didn't do.
bennysomething··on Ask HN: Have You Regretted Immigrating?
The guys I work are mostly speaking English as a second language. It doesn't seem to hold them back (as far as I can tell). I'm just impressed they can do same job as me but in a second language. Hrm on second thoughts maybe that means they are held back! Maybe they'd be working at a faang aotherwise!
bennysomething··on Ask HN: Have You Regretted Immigrating?
I could be wrong but should verb be emigrate here? I.e. you are leaving your home country.
bennysomething··on Is there a maximum size for Windows clipboard data?
Genuine question, why is it even possible to lock the clip board?
bennysomething··on What has changed with video games over the last 25 years, and what has not
I bought Deus ex mankind divided a year or two ago (I don't play games much anymore) the number of mechanics to learn is just annoying and they don't add much. Everything feels so much clunkier and slower than the orginal.

I recently installed the orginal , what a breath of fresh air. Just left to figure out levels yourself instead interruptions every step.

bennysomething··on What has changed with video games over the last 25 years, and what has not
Genuine question what is offset mapping and what would I see in Goldeneye showing this?
bennysomething··on Thoughts on C# and .NET
" It is cross-platform according to the docs, but in reality it comes from and is relied on mostly in a Windows world."

Not my experience at all, everything I do at work is c# on containers running Linux.

bennysomething··on After millennia of expansion, the world has passed ‘peak agricultural land’
It doesn't all fall into affordable housing category, people are complaining in London about new luxury high rise apartments because they are high end and "not affordable".
bennysomething··on After millennia of expansion, the world has passed ‘peak agricultural land’
There was a post on hacker news about this. Study in Finland showed it doesn't matter the type of housing, if it's luxury people move up and out of what they are currently in and the people below follow. Not surprising really, it's just supply and demand.
bennysomething··on Loot boxes in video games
Loot boxes, season passes, micro transactions: I'm sure there are some great modern games but as someone who grew up in the 80s and 90s these concepts are so depressing.

I remember custom skins and new maps meant downloading them for free, made by some enthusiasts.

I remember trying to make my own maps in unreal ed. Servers were free to play on. Or you hosted your own.

Most the games I play are from that era, I own them on gog.com now. Or on an everdrive, or emulated. Though to be fair I barely have ten minutes a day to myself usually!

And cash! :)
bennysomething··on Today’s JavaScript, from an outsider’s perspective (2020)
On a related note I think this is what is sort of wrong about the raspberry pi as tool for teaching beginners: the first thing the user sees and interacts with is Linux. In the 80s on a bubber key spectrum as far as I can recall it booted straight into a basic prompt / repl (or whatever the right term is). Even 8 year old me could start programming. Compare that to trying to get anywhere with Linux as a beginner.
bennysomething··on Joseph Stiglitz: 'We should shut down the cryptocurrencies'
Yes but that data is fragmented, not on a giant immutable ledger.
bennysomething··on Ask HN: What game do you wish existed?
A sequel to Goldeneye by the same team. Perfect dark just wasn't as good and it wasn't James Bond!

Yes timesplitters was close but not quite!

bennysomething··on Why isn’t new technology making us more productive?
Lost me at the bit about fud from rich people. I really doubt there is a conspiracy.
bennysomething··on How This Ends
What do you mean by create an entire second class of citizenship ? (Genuine question)

Are you referring to things like "key workers" (I personally hate this idea)

bennysomething··on Tell HN: Reddit does not allow comments post via old.reddit.com

bennysomething··on Workers deserve the right to disconnect (2021)
Read the first sentence of what I wrote "Sorry this might be true, but certainly never been true for me".
bennysomething··on Workers deserve the right to disconnect (2021)
Sorry this might be true, but certainly never been true for me. I work late, cook dinner, do house work, do garden work, do all the life admin, organise any repairs or do then myself. I am the main bread winner too. Yes my wife spends more time with our daughter but that's only because she works part time.

It's feels a bit unfair to be told that because I'm a man I don't do enough.

Yes but the primary reason given in the original comment was that they didn't like him, not the cost.
bennysomething··on The Making Of Grand Theft Auto (1996) [video]
I've worked in Scotland, I think it's just that Scots are pretty reserved and private by nature.
bennysomething··on Ask HN: Why can't I learn anymore?
I think you have a point here, summary book marked thanks for this.
bennysomething··on Ask HN: Why can't I learn anymore?
Just one thing, I became really interested in this too. It made me very unhappy that I didn't have it it. Sort of jealous of everyone who does have it. I see a contradiction now in what I wanted: living frugally to be free of pointless desires but in the end craving that so badly it was ruining my best years.

(Ps I still throw as much as I can afford in a pension because I'm terrified of being poor with no ability to earn when I'm older)

Anyway just my take, I'd still love to be financially free but I've accepted I won't be.
