bendhoefs··on Rewriting essential Linux packages in Rust
What does Rust have to do with it? You can write MIT or GPL licensed code in any language.
bendhoefs··on Microsoft deletes official Windows 11 CPU/TPM bypass for unsupported PCs
This is a bad idea. You can make Linux look like Windows on the surface but people are going to then be surprised and frustrated when it doesn't act like Windows, it will come off as cheap imitation. People get confused about the idea of something as simple as the concept of a single root file system, they will not understand that coming from a world of C, D, and E drives. It's best to make it look foreign to them so that they don't have their expectations subverted when they realize it actually is a fundamentally different operating system.
bendhoefs··on Notepad++ is 21 years old
I wish it would get LSP support. There are some plugins but they seem buggy/ incomplete/ abandoned. It could be a nice lightweight alternative to VSCode.
bendhoefs··on Windows 11 vs. Ubuntu 24.10 Performance For Intel Core Ultra 7 Lunar Lake
I'm surprised no one's mentioned Virtualization-based security in this thread. I suspect this is responsible for a big part of the gap.

bendhoefs··on Everyone says Chrome devastates Mac battery life, but does it? 36 hour test
What are these APIs? Why isn't this possible on standard cross platform graphics APIs?

Edit: I guess it's probably this sort of thing https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/win32/directcomp/a...

bendhoefs··on Comfy, the 2D rust game engine, is now archived
Why is that the bare minimum?

I also think that doc page is a little old. The feature is over 2 years old now and hot reloading is inherently "unsafe" in any compiled language. It's just letting you know that Rust's safety guarantees might go out the window if there are bugs in the code that handles hot-reloading.

bendhoefs··on Comfy, the 2D rust game engine, is now archived
What do you mean by this? Rust has multiple game engines that support hot reloading and/ or scripting.

bendhoefs··on Leaving Neovim for Zed
On my laptop there is a noticeable keystroke delay compared to other editors.
bendhoefs··on Spotify moves lyrics behind a paywall
Bandcamp and RYM.
bendhoefs··on Simulating Jupiter
It opened instantly and worked smoothly in Firefox on my 8 year old android.
bendhoefs··on RubyWM – an X11 window manager in pure Ruby
The code generation is certainly a build step. This kind of code generation is common for interfaces defined outside of a project's programming language.
bendhoefs··on The Linux graphics stack in a nutshell, part 2
KDE Plasma 6 will have some basic support for HDR features when it comes out. The Wayland color management protocol needed for full support is not yet finalized although there is a working informal implementation of HDR for the Steam Deck OLED.
bendhoefs··on RAM, Tesla and Subaru Have Worst Drivers, While BMWs Have Highest DUI Rates
What he's saying is they may have calculated rates based on how many cars of that brand were sold rather than how many are still "in circulation".
bendhoefs··on U.S. GDP grew at a 4.9% annual pace in the third quarter, better than expected
Do you think I'm saying this because I'm a Republican? Biden has actually been the best president of my lifetime for these issues but that just speaks to how pathetic the Democrats have been on economic issues for decades. Barely opposition at all economically speaking, they differentiate themselves more by wearing Kente cloth and engaging in divisive culture war stuff these days.
bendhoefs··on U.S. GDP grew at a 4.9% annual pace in the third quarter, better than expected

Here's what they think. Telling everyone to eat some charts while they're getting squeezed is not going to go over well.

bendhoefs··on U.S. GDP grew at a 4.9% annual pace in the third quarter, better than expected
I don't want 2008 to be the benchmark for a good economy.
bendhoefs··on U.S. GDP grew at a 4.9% annual pace in the third quarter, better than expected
Anti-monopoly policy is one lever the president has and has been essentially ignored since the 70s in favor talking about the fed the fed the fed all the time.

As one example the meat packing industry has become highly consolidated, squeezing both farmers and consumers while extracting massive profits. But across the entire economy many industries have become highly consolidated and subsequently raised their profit margins to the detriment of everyone but shareholders.

bendhoefs··on It's easy to screw up on breaking news but you have to admit when you do
At this moment there is still a headline up on BBC: Hospital Blast in Gaza City Kills Hundreds - Health Officials.

In addition to the problems Nate mentions with this wording a reasonable person could think that these "health officials" are a disinterested party, rather than what they are, an appendage of the Hamas run government.

bendhoefs··on AI-generated child sex imagery has every US Attorney General calling for action
The harm of child porn isn't just the children that are hurt by its production but also that it fuels the urges of the people who consume it. You don't cure people of any sexual compulsion by indulging it.

>The reason CSAM/CSEM is illegal is because a child had to be abused/exploited in order to create it, not because it's disgusting or immoral.

This is a very Liberal line of thought and it's this exact child porn example that makes me unable to consider myself a full Liberal.

bendhoefs··on AMD Open-Source GPU Kernel Driver Above 5M Lines, Entire Linux Kernel at 34.8M
Why should having the GPU drivers checked into the same repository mean that they can't be loaded and unloaded dynamically?
bendhoefs··on Layoffs are down, but employers are still finding ways to cut jobs
I don't agree with your assertions. They have a center-left worldview which I personally don't share but I find that they are generally factually accurate.

>We know they post propaganda, spin stories however they please

Don't speak for me. I don't know that, every publication has a slant of some kind.

bendhoefs··on Ask HN: Why does Firefox have such a low market share anyways?
A lot of people don't remember how slow Firefox used to be before ~2018. Maintaining compatibility with XUL extensions really held them back for a while.
bendhoefs··on Intel and the $1.5T chip industry meltdown
Why? If China decides to invade Taiwan surely they'll do everything they can to not give the rest of the world a reason to intervene.

They want Taiwan not a war with the entire west all at once.

bendhoefs··on Moth wing–inspired sound absorbing wallpaper in sight after breakthrough
In my experience it's newer buildings that tend to have paper thin walls. In my current apartment(late 70s) I very rarely hear my neighbors.

At my last apartment I could literally hear my neighbors cough. Absolutely miserable. I wish there were some sort of measurable standard rating for noise transmittance through walls that landlords are obligated to disclose to potential renters.

bendhoefs··on Estonia, allies to trigger NATO Article 4
Well, bad example, but it was a key event.
bendhoefs··on Estonia, allies to trigger NATO Article 4
I'm reminded of a dead archduke and burning Reichstag...
bendhoefs··on Ask HN: Why is Firefox losing marketshare and how would you save it?
A browser would not do well as a volunteer driven open-source project. It is simply too big and too complex to be able to get by without full-time paid developers.
bendhoefs··on Autonomous battery-powered rail cars
The efficiency of a truck combined with the flexibility of a train. Perfect.
bendhoefs··on Intel's $20B Ohio factory could become world's largest chip plant
It's not like semiconductor plants are using the cheapest possible labor they can get their hands on. I imagine there are very few people working in semiconductor plants that don't have post secondary education.
bendhoefs··on Webb flies Ariane 5: watch the launch live on 25 December
What booster would you use?

Another booster up in the fairing? That would need to be quite heavy. It would be a totally custom thing for this specific mission. You would need a suitable storable propellant.

Leave the booster from the Ariane attached? The lh2 and lox would boil off after a few days.

What do you do if the deployment fails? SpaceX's dragon can't do space-walks on its own, it doesn't have an airlock. There would be no way to fix it short of developing a whole new space craft for that task.
