beardedetim··on Helplessness is not learned (2022)
100% agree here. In my younger days, I used to think that "willpower" was an unlimited resource but totally agree that there _are active limits_ to it and even more so you _cannot change things outside your control_. Someone once said that humans can only handle so many things at once and the moment you give them even one more thing than they can handle, all of the spinning plates come crashing down. I think that when we focus on learning to spin just one plate, that can snowball into learning to spin many plates, even though we still can only spin 10 plates at a time before all hell breaks loose.
beardedetim··on Helplessness is not learned (2022)
I've called this the snowball of success where you make small, disciplined actions that you call "success" (_setting an alarm_) than then "snowballs" into larger "successes" (_cleaning your room_). The opposite is true as well, in my experience: if you fail to make the _small_ actions, it will "snowball" into you not making the larger actions throughout the day.
beardedetim··on I Fired Myself
As someone who is trying to be positive, charming, and friendly in the professional world because that's the type of work environment I want to be in, how can I do that without sending red flags to my coworkers/direct reports? What can I do in order to instill a culture of grace and gratitude without coming across as playing politics?
beardedetim··on Ask HN: How do you not take criticism of your work personally?
I feel I am the same way and in every new 1:1 where someone asks how I like to receive feedback, I have learned I need to ask them for it async. I tell people that if they have anything to tell me, to put it in a slack message or email so that I can take the beat, feel negative, feel like I'm being attacked, and then process that emotion before responding.

It's something I'm still working on and as others have said, having worth outside of your career or outside of others is a big portion of my ability to work through the emotions. But while I'm still learning that, I really have found power and stability from letting that emotion pass before responding

In my party days,I always understood MDMAas being pure MDMA while X was MDMA mixed with coke, meth, or heroin to make the drug effects last longer, as the half life of MDMA is smaller than those other three.
beardedetim··on We're afraid language models aren't modeling ambiguity
The pseudo-science of NLP (_neuro-lingustic programming_) or "conversational hypnosis" is based on the believe that you _can_ program people with carefully constructed prompts alone. Not saying I _believe_ NLP to be valid (_hence the pseudo-science callout_) but I did fall down the Milton H Erickson wormhole 10-20yrs ago so can't say I never fell for it myself.
beardedetim··on A Gambler Who Beat Roulette
> There really is no reason to legalize gambling casinos.

Why should the government outlaw my ability to give my money away however I want to? If I want to go put all my money on black because it's fun to me, why should that be illegal?

beardedetim··on Was there a tech-hiring bubble? Job postings data suggest so
> from which they can afford to pay the devs 3x more doesn't actually mean they create 3x more value.

If these two companies are of equal sizings, or if we can find a ratio/cost per engineer/etc that we can say is "equal enough", and we say that Company A makes 3x what Company B makes using this metric, wouldn't it be right to say that Company A's employees produce 3x the profit of Company B?

Given, Company A has a stronghold on the market, government handouts, etc, that are _causing the 3x profit increase_. I for sure agree with that. But, at the end of the day, isn't the employee, the ones producing the output, generating output worth more than Company B?

beardedetim··on Was there a tech-hiring bubble? Job postings data suggest so
Where do you find these plumbers? When we owned our house, we never were able to find any contractor that was reliable, upfront about costs, etc. Hell, getting them on the phone and to show up was hard enough.
beardedetim··on No Lodash
Cannot recommend Ramda enough. It's a great utility belt to build your application with. Only downside is the pushback I always receive from the team when I try to introduce it.
beardedetim··on Banning words won’t make the world more just
This seems extremely unhealthy for you. Specifically the work environment you are currently in.
beardedetim··on The End of the English Major
I think the only way we could allow this is through some sort of UBI or other government/state/community backed right to your needs being met.

Maybe that's what you mean by genuinely affluent society, and I'd agree one of those societies would not only allow people to pursue but reap the benefits of its populace pursuing those things.

However I don't think it's possible with the current incentives in place. While being educated and pursuing your interests are allowed and in some circles lauded, your basic needs being met far outweighs any other incentive any actor has.

Maybe we should focus on allowing building that society but I don't think that means in the current society we can even begin to pretend people are encouraged to pursue their interests at the costs of their basic needs being met.

beardedetim··on Queues should be empty
I think this is a valid concern for Future Us to worry about. If you have alerts for when this is going to happen, you can punt the issue until it starts to become a concern and who knows if your product will be alive when that issue happens.
beardedetim··on Show HN: Self-host Whisper As a Service with GUI and queueing
We use whisper at $dayjob and we found that it is far better than Azures transcripts and we found that Azure and GCP had about the same correctness.

I'd assume whisper will be better than YT auto ones for sure, especially if you choose the right model

beardedetim··on Gitlab to lay off 7% of staff
I agree that they are stuck in a bind, for sure, and they are definitely causing a recession in order to stave off the larger dragon/danger of inflation.

Also agree it's largely due to QE! I think the only thing I find weird enough to pause and think "huh, that's weird" is the timing. Labor gets market power and oh wow, we better fight inflation.

Maybe it just all happened at the same time and COVID caused it to bubble over. Just seems weird timing to me.

beardedetim··on Gitlab to lay off 7% of staff
Specifically the Fed is trying to wrestle away the monetary power that Labor has, quoting a "wage-price spiral". In other words, the Fed is trying to cause a recession in order to fend off inflation, at the cost of Labors current economic power.
beardedetim··on Spotify is first music streaming service to surpass 200M paid subscribers
I only have ever had XM when it came with the car for a year intro period. Seriously the best "I just want tunes" radio!
beardedetim··on Ask HN: What would be involved in building your own YouTube clone?
You would need some ingestion that takes in raw video from your creators and make it playable by as many people as possible. That would probably lead to HLS, CMAF, or similar.

Then you'd need some server to serve those assets. That would lead to a CDN or similar.

Then you'd need a player. HTML seems to play back mpeg fine but you'll probably need a player for HLS. video.js seems fine here.

beardedetim··on Strava hikes monthly subscription price
I definitely cancelled mine. I decided to switch to using Garmin Connect fulltime instead of that and Strava.
beardedetim··on Ask HN: What do you talk about in 1-on-1s with your managers?
It's okay to skip 1:1s if there's nothing to talk about. I think it's more important to have a standing meeting were both parties know they can bring up "serious things" than to use every standing meeting to its fullest.

As to what I talk about during my 1:1s, if it's not just bullshitting with my manager and building rapport, it's usually "this thing is hurting me/our team. What can we do about that?" Or "I feel like I'm kicking ass. How can we raise my awareness to the org?"

Basic questions that I would like a sync answer to and to give space for any conversations that need to happen.

beardedetim··on Kids and music lessons: why do many promising players quit early?
The two are so similar, bands do acoustic sets all the time! I learned to play a lot of Nirvana via their MTV or VH1 or whatever those acoustic concerts were hosted on since I only had a Goya acoustic
beardedetim··on Writing a Mini-CDN to Learn Nginx/Prometheus/Grafana/Lua
At $dayjob we're considering replacing DataDog with Grafana and friends, already using it elsewhere to great affect.

Haven't used influxdb yet so can't speak as a comparison but from my usage, I'm sold on Grafana, Loki, Prometheus, and friends over DataDog. It mixed with OTel have been a real pleasure to use.

beardedetim··on Who knew the first AI battles would be fought by artists?
> making art is vastly more difficult than the huge majority of computer programming that is done.

I'd reframe this to: making a living from your art is far more difficult than making money from programming.

> also be able to do the dumb, simple things most programmers do for their jobs?

I'm all for Ai automating all the boring shit for me. Just like frameworks have. Just like libraries have. Just like DevOps have. Take all the plumbing and make it automated! I'm all for it!

But. At some point. Someone needs to take business speak and turn it into input for this machine. And wouldn't ya know it, I'm already getting paid for that!

beardedetim··on Programs are dead, and JavaScript has killed them
This is exactly my feelings throughout this thread. We have apps in prod that haven't been touched in years that don't break and handle average to high req/s. We add a line here or there as we need to for bug fixes but we don't have any dep problems randomly breaking the app.

Pin your deps and everything keeps working how you want.

beardedetim··on Be wary of imitating high-status people who can afford to countersignal
> The vast vast majority of people are not "signaling" when they do things, they are just doing things.

I agree with you that most actors don't consciously make decisions based on how they will be perceived and instead just do things.

However, I don't think that stops other actors from, without thinking themselves, taking those actions as signals and judging others by those signals.

We as the actors being judged can choose to think through those things or not. Either way we're being judged by those "signals". And either way I'm judging others based on those signals.

beardedetim··on Ask HN: How do I find my “purpose”?
I apologize for misunderstanding your statement. Thank you for clarifying! I'd still be interested in who you read that have lead you to this if you're interested in sharing more.
beardedetim··on Ask HN: How do I find my “purpose”?
I am glad you found meaning in science and facts! Maybe I didn't read the right scientists.

I couldn't get past what Plato would call 'shadows on a cave wall' when it comes to finding 'truth' but once again, I am probably not reading the right people or the 'right works'. If you have anything you'd recommend I'd love to read it.

beardedetim··on Ask HN: How do I find my “purpose”?
From my own search on this topic:

Science can only do so much with the 'internal' meaning. All people I've read are inadequate or point to religion.

Religions, across the board, sure seems to be solely focused on purpose and meaning.

If you want purpose outside yourself, I'd look to a religion or a group that functions similarly. I dug Alan Watts and the like for awhile. More recently have liked St Augustine and other apologetics.

I know the concept religion causes raised flags but I do suggest that you are least give it an open mind while you search.

beardedetim··on Cloud services like AWS or Google Cloud Platform may be the wrong choice
> The beauty of container based serverless is that you have portability.

I think this is the major take away I am having from this hype cycle of the Cloud: that if we just build containers/functions, we can sort everything else out however the credit card allows.

I'm on the fence about if it should be DO or EKS or GKE or whatever. That's for Credit Card Man and me to decide. As an engineer, I just want to build a docker container and call it a day.

beardedetim··on That snapper might be 80 years old
Can I ask a stupid question in earnest? Is it bad for them to die out? Is the fear that if we lose 90% of this life that there will be complete collapse of the worlds ecosystem?

Maybe a better question would be: where can I find more information on the consequences of this?
