beagle90··on What are your biggest career regrets?
I say the same as I never really turned up to University, however I knew I wanted to be a programmer afterwards and people wouldn't speak to me without that Degree...
beagle90··on Nukes ready to fly
On a positive note: those Nukes are probably what has stood between many state v state wars which may have taken place over the past 60 years had the assured destruction not been there.
beagle90··on A very common grammatical mistake that programmers make
Ahhh not me! Every time I inform someone about this grammatical difference I get a warm smug feeling inside.
beagle90··on I own some very well-followed social accounts. How can I make this a business?
Please don't. If I follow one of those groups it's because I have an interest in that particular movie/film/book/sport/whatever. If your posts are no longer relevant I will unfollow you.
beagle90··on An experimental real world adblock
Seeing a city like that was so refreshing, it must be nice to live somewhere your attention isn't constantly pulled here and there, and where a sense of want is re-enforced every time you lift your head.
beagle90··on Show HN: Taskulu, Next-gen role based project management platform
I can't see anything without signing up? How as a user should I know whether it's worth signing up for ? Or indeed what I am signing up for. A simple 'About' or 'Features' section is much needed IMHO.

Aside from this, once you're in it looks awesome. Like someone added all the great features that a project manager would want added to trello!

beagle90··on The Neanderthal correlation (2008)
The author seems to have contributed to New Scientist on the subject matter[1], therefore I'm hoping (and expecting) it to be the latter of your two possibilities.

beagle90··on HN Salary Survey Results, Fall 2014
Yeah this would be a much better metric. I'm a "senior" developer who only has 3 years experience.
beagle90··on Song of the Introvert
...said the startup marketing director to the coder.
beagle90··on Inside a Tesla Model S Battery Pack
Can we hurry with the electric buses already...
beagle90··on How can an introvert Asian engineer like me make friends?
Look up RSD Tyler on YouTube. On the surface it can seem deeply insincere and shallow but I believe some of techniques taught they can be applied in all areas of life when interacting with people.
beagle90··on Framework 7 – Building native iOS apps in HTML5
Web Dev here. I don't think the stack is broken.
beagle90··on Lessons from a Silicon Valley job search
Always go for the highest they offer. E.g. If you apply for a job 25,000 - 35,000 go for 35k. My thinking behind this is that it shows you're confident in your ability. Remember a lot of companies are big enough to incur an extra 5k of salary in order to get the very best candidate.

I'd say the above becomes more true the bigger the company gets... Small companies <10 employees this theory could well breakdown.

beagle90··on College Grads Taking Low-Wage Jobs Displace Less Educated
Ceteris paribus == "all other things being equal"
beagle90··on [dead]
Yeah pay someone to add a filter. I'm thinking simply grab the html from each HN link, perform some search against a Bitcoin word/phrase dictionary, if it's a match then hide that link.
beagle90··on Engineers Allege Hiring Collusion in Silicon Valley
If this did cause a brain drain then this would likely force other industries to raise salaries in order to compete; and so continues the circle of life.
beagle90··on Rolls-Royce Drone Ships Challenge $375B Freight Industry
This also. Without hostages the pirates are open to a world of hurt. Here's to hoping the Somalian pirates won't need to be as desperate by the time these ships set sail.
beagle90··on Rolls-Royce Drone Ships Challenge $375B Freight Industry
This was my initial thought. Then I realised whatever sensors are on-board these things would likely detect incoming pirate attacks (of the physical kind) from miles away (think satellites). At which point nearby naval forces would be alerted.

Hell, you could go a step further and equip each one with it's own drone to defend itself in case of attack.

beagle90··on Poll: Full-time software engineers in London, what's your annual salary?
Looks like my plan for eventually moving to London and earning a £100k whilst commuting in my 911 are out of the window. How hard is it for a UK programmer to find work (not telecommute) in the US?
beagle90··on Poll: Full-time software engineers in London, what's your annual salary?
Not many advertised positions here in Leeds pay 50k. Senior roles seem to top out at 45k.
beagle90··on Poll: Full-time software engineers in London, what's your annual salary?
How to win friends and influence people - Dale Carnegie. I found this book quite brilliant.
beagle90··on I Freelanced On Halo 4. It's Time For Gaming's Contractors To Strike
It seems to be as though you may be seeking reward from the wrong places. Yes you weren't treated great and yes you didn't become part of the team, but you WERE part of something special. The work you did there contributed towards 2012's most successful video game! If you really want to be part of a team you should push for a permanent position somewhere.

On the other hand... if you're confident you're dang good at what you do and don't need to seek outward approval (from the wrong sources) keep being a contractor, keep blasting those projects and eventually someone will notice how you're a common denominator of success.

beagle90··on Show HN: Sleep Debt Calculator
http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2010/02/100201091632.ht...

Science seems to contradict the premise of this project. The research out there seems to suggest anywhere from 5-7 hours can be a healthy amount for an adult human.

This sort of project could cause anxiety about lack of sleep therefore causing a further lack thereof.

TLDR: If you're tired sleep. If you're not.. stay awake.*

* A well balanced diet and exercise regime are recommended in order for this point to be valid.

beagle90··on The Effects of Computer Programming on the Brain (2012)
Wow, I have literally just gone through that whole process. This post really hit home for me. I will code what I find intellectually challenging and then as the complexity dies off so does my motivation. What would be your suggestion be to find it within oneself to complete those periphery objectives and break this cycle?
beagle90··on Great Ideas Aren't Worth Much Without Great Execution Behind Them
I really like this article. However, I can't help but disagree with the line "Find an exploit in a saturated market that can’t be copied". Surely almost any software idea which isn't too complex can be copied?

This is the main fear I have when prototyping new ideas. If it is a success, then surely the larger, more resourced competition will simply assimilate it into their own product.
