Have you had a really deep insight on your own, or just quoted a good idea without attribution?

bdjsiqoocwk··on What excessive screen time does to the adult brain
There's a subreddit for this, it's r/MurderedByWords
bdjsiqoocwk··on What excessive screen time does to the adult brain
> Though it will need to be used in conjunction with other methods of learning to be truly helpful.

This reminded me of that story by Feynman where he meets a painter that claims we can make orange paint with just red and white.

bdjsiqoocwk··on What excessive screen time does to the adult brain
Learning fast is fun to me.

Edit: yes, I am dismissive because I've tried it and seen that its obviously a scam, in the sense that it's sold as a fun way of learning but it's actually just a fun way of not learning.

> I use my phone on a morning for Duolingo

Duolingo is extremely passive. you're not learning a language, you're learning how to answer correctly on an app.

It's a lot more time efficient to do exercises from a grammar. But... It doesn't feel as good. Which is exactly the point.

bdjsiqoocwk··on QBittorrent: Open-Source, Lightweight BitTorrent Client with No Ads
Ooo cool

Right, like in all decentralized systems, ensuring that all parts are working together is a challenge. Thanks for this.

bdjsiqoocwk··on QBittorrent: Open-Source, Lightweight BitTorrent Client with No Ads
OT Does anyone know if the torrent technology itself allow incremental stuff? For example, if a torrent contains the first N episodes of a series and the N+1 episode comes out, is it possible to create for the new episode which references the previous torrent so that a client doesnt have to download any previous episode?
bdjsiqoocwk··on Newton's financial misadventures in the South Sea Bubble (2018)
This article confirms that the common lore is broadly correct. Newton bought, stock goes up, Newton sells, realizes huge gains, stock goes up more, Newton buys again, stock crashes, Newton loses big.
bdjsiqoocwk··on Math from Three to Seven
Right... tell me you didn't read the article, am I right. That's why I didn't bother replying. I often feel the impulse to reply to "show everyone that this guy is talking nonsense" but if that's obvious other people will see it too, so I say nothing.
bdjsiqoocwk··on UK founders rush to sell startups ahead of Autumn Budget
But if people are selling because it will go down in value, the buyers know that too and bid less. The traded price will always be (approximately) one that makes you indifferent to buy or sell.
bdjsiqoocwk··on UK founders rush to sell startups ahead of Autumn Budget
If a startup is making money, why sell?
bdjsiqoocwk··on Math from Three to Seven
Lol what
bdjsiqoocwk··on Math from Three to Seven
Not a good metric for producing scientific talent, and it doesn't distinguish reading fiction from actually educating yourself. For the purposes of producing scientific talent, reading fiction helps you as much as watching TV.
bdjsiqoocwk··on COBOL has been “dead” for so long, my grandpa wrote about it
I don't understand these "never failed" comments. Without further context, it's meaningless. If I write a python script and never change anything in its environtment or inputs, it won't fail either. That's not specific to cobol.
bdjsiqoocwk··on US man, 81, sentenced to six months for creating giant hybrid sheep for hunting
Literally in the article

> The US district court judge Brian Morris said […] he weighed Schubarth’s age

bdjsiqoocwk··on Antidemocratic, Racist, and Antisemitic Sentiments in Postwar West Germany
I read somewhere a while ago that after Germany lost nothing basically changed with respect to antisemitism, until the US started "denazification" in the late 60s, which encompassed re-educating Germany society that Jews aren't bad.

No idea if this is true or myth, but fascinating to imagine.

bdjsiqoocwk··on US man, 81, sentenced to six months for creating giant hybrid sheep for hunting
Very light on technical details.
bdjsiqoocwk··on US man, 81, sentenced to six months for creating giant hybrid sheep for hunting
I thought that the person's age was often taken into account? I think it's silly to put someone 6mos in jail for creating a hybrid, but it's even worse when we're talking about a 81yo.
bdjsiqoocwk··on Franklin expedition captain who died in 1848 was cannibalized by survivors
Are you taking about this? https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Terror_(TV_series)

Follow up question, why is it that in season 2 everyone is Japanese?

bdjsiqoocwk··on GnuCash 5.9
Oh ok. I will have a look, thank you!

Does it allow setting values, or just reading?

bdjsiqoocwk··on GnuCash 5.9
I bed that's true. And that's nothing to do with which is more complex. I'm not saying SQLite is more difficult to use, I'm saying it's more complex. You're confusing the two.
bdjsiqoocwk··on GnuCash 5.9
Right! And this isnt a difficult feature to implement either. You just need that A) every transaction, or better every leg of a transaction, supports tag, and B) the reports break down by tag.
bdjsiqoocwk··on GnuCash 5.9
The other person said GnuCash has a scripting engine. These are just scripts. Not the same thing.
bdjsiqoocwk··on GnuCash 5.9
I would like to learn more about this. Why is it that those things won't work with GnuCash?

A lot of other people seem interested, if you have a blog this would be a great post.

bdjsiqoocwk··on GnuCash 5.9
Yes, I know what to do. Doesn't change the fact it's more complex.

In fact, any database is more complex than a text file.

You sound like the kind of person to push at work for a database when a file would suffice, introducing needless complexity.

bdjsiqoocwk··on GnuCash 5.9
May I ask why you want this? Does it have an actual purpose or do you just enjoy processing data? If the purpose is "check what % I'm spending in each category", you don't need account software for this. You just need a table with 2 columns, price and category and group by and sum. How you get that table has nothing to do with accounting.
bdjsiqoocwk··on GnuCash 5.9
Suppose you don't have SQLite, how do you open a SQLite database? The only way is you have to re-implement SQLite from scratch. Good luck with that.

Now imagine you don't have vim, how do you open an XML file? You can use any of other thousands of text editors out there, or any of tens of libs in tens of different languages.

I think your take that sqlite is simpler than a text file is the weird one.

bdjsiqoocwk··on Engineers investigate another malfunction on SpaceX's Falcon 9 rocket
You're misinformed. NASA pays SpaceX roughly what it was paying the Russians.
bdjsiqoocwk··on Engineers investigate another malfunction on SpaceX's Falcon 9 rocket
Lots of words, but the numbers are made up. The vast vast majority of the costs is fuel, and that can't be changed by tech. It's just physics.
bdjsiqoocwk··on Engineers investigate another malfunction on SpaceX's Falcon 9 rocket
Well to me the only milestone that matters is the cost of launching to orbit, and that hasn't improved.
