bdavisx··on It doesn't have to be crazy at work
Do you have any proof of that? Are there studies that show companies that work "crazy" vs. "not crazy" are more successful?

From my experience working harder didn't get me any further than not. Everything I've seen in life has shown me that who you know (and even more importantly who you parents introduce know, at least when you're younger) will get you a lot farther than how hard you work.

bdavisx··on Miami Will Be Underwater Soon. Its Drinking Water Could Go First
National Flood Insurance is run by the government, it's not the same as most property insurance.
bdavisx··on Kotlin 1.2.60 comes with native compiler binaries
They had their own "languages" - Turbo Pascal (Delphi) and Borland C++, while not "new" languages, they were both very specific to Borland in their own ways. Their IDE's were much better than just about anything else available at the time. Then they made mistakes and competition came in big time (Visual Studio iirc). Anyway, it was a "long" time ago and I don't remember all of the details, but that's the gist of it.

I'm sure someone will be happy to correct anything I got wrong :)

edit: I don't think this will happen to JetBrains. edit2: Forgot the "Delphi" name, but it was basically TP w/ libraries.

bdavisx··on Hackers Breached Virginia Bank Twice in Eight Months, Stole $2.4M
I'm pretty sure the NSA isn't hacking banks to steal a few million dollars, considering their budget.
bdavisx··on Hackers Breached Virginia Bank Twice in Eight Months, Stole $2.4M
Why would the Russian's care if their address was known? They aren't going to be extradited or punished by the Russian government, they may be funded by the government or people very well connected to the government. Not to make it political, but they hacked many of our election systems and didn't even get punished for that.
bdavisx··on De Beers admits defeat over man-made diamonds
No, it won't: https://www.alibaba.com/countrysearch/CN/cvd-diamond.html
bdavisx··on From Java to Kotlin and Back Again
Actually, the colon is consistent here: `val x: Integer` means x isA integer; `class Dog(): Animal()` means Dog isA animal. They mean the same thing within their respective contexts.
bdavisx··on China Is Nationalizing Its Tech Sector
Well that's good for everyone else competing with China. It will slow innovation. Imagine if you had to worry about doing something that pissed off someone on your companies "Communist Committee" (or whatever the article called them). Yes, in general a company in China has to be careful how it treads with respect to the national communist party, but now they'll have to worry about the lower level people that are inside their company. And those "party" people will have ambitions, and when the company does good, they will do good. BUT, those (at least some of those) same party people will be risk averse, probably a lot more risk averse than a typical tech innovator. Think about politicians here in the US and how long it takes them to embrace things that are already popular with the general public (marijuana legalization for example). That's what these companies will be up against, and it will slow them down.
bdavisx··on Toys R Us to close all 800 of its U.S. stores
But the company was profitable before the VCs "restructured" it to basically steal (legally) everything they could. That's how the Vulture Capitalists work, there are other comments detailing this. Just because you can make money doesn't mean you should.
bdavisx··on Toys R Us to close all 800 of its U.S. stores
Depends on what "worth more" means. From a purely monetary standpoint liquidation that might be true. But giving VCs who are likely already rich more money vs. taking away peoples jobs isn't always the best way to "repurpose" money.
bdavisx··on Message Passing and the Actor Model
The article doesn't mention [Vert.x](http://vertx.io/), another JVM library/framework (also works outside of the JVM with Javascript for example) that is loosely based on the actor model. And now with Kotlin coroutine support, they've managed to abstract away a lot of the nodejs like callbacks that clutter up your code - you still need to be aware of what's happening wrt callbacks and such, but it makes your code a lot nicer: http://vertx.io/docs/vertx-lang-kotlin-coroutines/kotlin/#_g...
bdavisx··on InfoWars’ conspiracy theories have advertisers ditching YouTube channels
>Infowars has more often than not been right on important matters.

Would you mind providing a list of those things it's been right on?

bdavisx··on Where are all the films about poor Americans?
I don't think any of the main characters in Breaking Bad lived in poverty; even the secondary ones didn't for the most part. If WW had died w/o becoming a drug kingpin, he would have left his family in poverty, but they didn't live in poverty before.
bdavisx··on Jeff Bezos is the richest person in history
It's a sad commentary on capitalism that two of the richest people in history (Bezos and Walton) companies treat many of their employees like shit.
bdavisx··on Men Resist Green Behavior as Un-Manly
So it should probably be titled: "Sexually Insecure Men..."
bdavisx··on Kotlin Features I miss most in Java
Kotlin coroutines support in Vert.x 3.5 allows you to write "regular" exception handling code inside of a method, it's nice.

bdavisx··on Marijuana Compound Removes Toxic Alzheimer’s Protein from the Brain
I thought I had read a study once and the abstract said it as follows (which I found amusing):

* Marijuana causes short-term short-term memory loss, but doesn't cause long-term short-term memory loss.

Unfortunately I can't find the study info now (@ work, so I'm kinda limited on spending too much time research pot...)

bdavisx··on Wall Street Banks Warn Downturn Is Coming
Not totally during the 2008 recession, there was support for cutting taxes, but not increasing spending. "Austerity"
bdavisx··on Ask HN: Which companies give programmers offices?
Good point, and I guess it would be up to the employee to negotiate more $ for their office (if possible).
bdavisx··on Ask HN: Which companies give programmers offices?
If it's your employer, they should be paying for the entire cost of your office.
bdavisx··on Ask HN: Which companies give programmers offices?
You might want to "name and not-shame" them, some people want to know because they want to work for companies like this.
bdavisx··on IEEE Spectrum 2017 Top Programming Languages
Actually I was looking at the larger 40-some list, not the top 10, should have mentioned that in my comment.
bdavisx··on How a Reddit forum has become a lifeline to opioid addicts in the US
Except in the case of opioids, government and regular ARE the problem. If they were legal and available through a regulated supply, most of the OD's would never happen. They happen because someone gets a dose of the drug that's 10-100 times stronger than the one they had yesterday.

That's no different than people going blind/dying from wood alcohol during prohibition.

The solution is to legalize and regulate, but I'm not holding my breath.

bdavisx··on IEEE Spectrum 2017 Top Programming Languages
I filtered by "Mobile" for both the "IEEE Spectrum" (which I guess means overall) and the "Trending" and Kotlin was nowhere to be found.

So I have to question the list in it's entirety. I know I"m a Kotlin fanboy and that it's not a "gigantic" language, but still, you'd think it would at least show up as trending for mobile in a 2017 list.

bdavisx··on Job applicants over 40 filtered out by employers
It's not typical for the Midwest.
bdavisx··on America’s new tobacco crisis: The rich stopped smoking, the poor didn’t
Seems to me like that's a Freedom of Speech issue.
bdavisx··on Java may be verbose, but who cares?
I'd be interested to see a Kotlin <-> Java side-by-side in the same instance. I don't know if the savings would be as dramatic, but it's a lot easier for devs (especially typical "enterprise" devs) to learn Kotlin.
bdavisx··on Air Force grounds F-35 operations after pilots suffered hypoxia
This is one hell of an aircraft system. Huge amounts of money, still not operational, but lots of money made by defense contractor companies.
bdavisx··on Did the Intercept bungle the NSA leak?
How about applying machine learning towards vetting social media wrt people with TS and >TS clearance?
bdavisx··on Samuel R. Delany’s Life of Contradictions
It's not an easy read. But it's awesome!

When you're reading it, consider that the author is a supreme being, and can make the world do whatever he wants, including things that are not possible, because he's a supreme being (and that's what an author is).
