bcosynot··on Boost the speed of spotlight search in Mac-OS
Is this better than using Alfred?
bcosynot··on Ask HN: What are your favorite home workspace hacks?
Things that have really helped me:

1. A more ergonomic setup to help with my RSI - an ergodox ez keyboard, with a tilting keyboard tray attached to my standing desk and adjustable monitor arms makes it very easy to adjust things and make it comfortable for me

2. Having some greenery around me in terms of plants helps.

3. I prefer having a cup to drink water from (instead of drinking from a bottle directly)

4. I spray-painted my keyboard and changed the keycaps - made it a little more joyful for me. Might do it again after a while to bring some variety.

bcosynot··on Ask HN: What developer tools would you like to see?
Yes, docs on the website are upcoming. Meanwhile I have some documentation on github for the cli [1] and vscode plugin [2]

bcosynot··on Ask HN: How do I optimize learning to code to build my MVP?
I would also recommend looking into no-code tools for your mvp and problem validation.
bcosynot··on Ask HN: What developer tools would you like to see?
Can you elaborate on "reduces context-switching"? I am working on something around that, but it can mean different things based on context.
bcosynot··on Ask HN: What developer tools would you like to see?
Does vim mode in IDEs cover your use case?
bcosynot··on Ask HN: What developer tools would you like to see?
I am working on a tool I'm calling Makerflow[1] that covers your github PRs and upcoming meetings use cases. My big picture aim is to work towards a system that makes it easier for devs to do do deep work, collaborate effectively, and manage their cognitive load.

bcosynot··on Ask HN: How to use FB and Reddit to get your first customers?
I would love to learn what you folks decided on.
bcosynot··on Show HN: Pitchwall – Pitch your startup in 30 seconds, or view other pitches
Love it. Do you have any suggestions on which video tool to use?
bcosynot··on OfferMarket launched today on Product Hunt, and we failed miserably
I don't think PH has the same credibility it did a couple of years ago.
bcosynot··on Ask HN: How to use FB and Reddit to get your first customers?
Gotcha. Most subreddits are averse to self-promotion, so you run the risk of a negative response from redditors. I can't speak to Facebook groups since I don't use them much.

It might be difficult to target ads to landlords on these platforms. I am not sure what targeting attributes might be available.

Maybe you could cold email/call property management companies and you might find specific people to email on LinkedIn. They manage larger number of properties and so this might be a bigger pain for them? Cold emailing and selling also makes it possible to get continuous and early feedback from engaged customers. It might not scale, but that's fine [1]

bcosynot··on Ask HN: How to use FB and Reddit to get your first customers?
Can you provide some details about the target market? B2B or B2C?
bcosynot··on GitJournal – Mobile First Markdown Notes Integrated with Git
Looks awesome! Is there anyway to tag notes and view them by tags?
bcosynot··on Slack May Be the New Open Floor Plan
The interruptions from Slack (and in open floor offices) are infuriating to me as a dev. But, collaborating with your coworkers is important to build great products imo. I'm hoping to solve this issue by building Makerflow[1].

bcosynot··on Why does package-lock.json exist, and how does it work?
Super useful, thanks for writing it!
bcosynot··on Ask HN: Engineering managers – how do you measure developer productivity?
I would love to see that blog post!
bcosynot··on Ask HN: Engineering managers – how do you measure developer productivity?
I don't think anything exists out of the box unfortunately. You should be able to start tracking them manually as a starting point. Do read the book (Accelerate by Dr Nicole Forsgren) for more information about why these are important.
bcosynot··on Ask HN: Finding reference customers for a SaaS product
Definitely. That was a great start.

The book also does a good job of addressing concerns about appearing too spammy or scummy. Helped me change my mindset about that part of sales too.

bcosynot··on Ask HN: How hands-on should an Engineering Manager be?
Ideally none at all. I think engineers deserve a manager that is focussed on coaching, facilitation, unblocking etc. Being hands on, managers are probably not going to do a great job at either, unless there are only a max of 2-3 reports.
bcosynot··on Ask HN: Engineering managers – how do you measure developer productivity?
Check out the 4 key metrics from Accelerate - deployment frequency, lead time, change rate failure and mean time to recovery. This is good for teams. IMHO, tracking productivity for individuals is irrelevant.
bcosynot··on What sacrifices do you need to take in order to achieve your goal?
I don't remember where I heard/read this, but someone said that to do achieve something extraordinary you have to make sacrifices and push yourself. Otherwise everyone else would be able to achieve the same things working a single job, normal hours, spending time with friends and family and other leisure activities and those achievements would be ordinary by definition.

I thought that was an interesting take.

bcosynot··on AMZ launches a program to pay consumers for their data on non-Amazon purchases
My time and data are worth more than that, Amazon.
bcosynot··on How an Engineering Manager improved their team’s productivity by 40%
I'm curious about the 2 hours of maker time thing. Where does "2 hours" come from?
bcosynot··on New York MTA launches real-time digital subway map
It looks pretty cool. What are some good use cases for it?
bcosynot··on Ask HN: Finding reference customers for a SaaS product
Peter Kazanjy's "Founding Sales" is a good resource for figuring out how to get those initial customers and all the steps involved with it. I am halfway through it and really appreciate all the details it provides and doesn't hand wave any part of it.
bcosynot··on When you tell Chrome to wipe private data it spares Google.com and YouTube
That's not great. I didn't know this, thanks for pointing it out.
bcosynot··on When you tell Chrome to wipe private data it spares Google.com and YouTube
Vue devtools only integrates with chrome devtools AFAIK, and I work with vue quite a bit.

Other than that, I'll admit, a large part of it is familiarity.

bcosynot··on When you tell Chrome to wipe private data it spares Google.com and YouTube
I switched to Firefox for regular browsing, but use Chrome for development because their devtools is so much better. I hope Firefox invests more in devtools development, honestly. More devs developing on FF could lead to higher adoption.
bcosynot··on Show HN: No-Code Stripe Billing Pages
Looks really cool! The pricing model is interesting, I don't think I have seen that before.
bcosynot··on Ask HN: When should a startup hire their first developer?
They're probably raising a seed round to hire more folks. So, that would be a good time to hire.
