bargainbin··on Labor market impacts of AI: A new measure and early evidence
Much like LLM output, this seems convincing at first glance but it’s stating assumption as fact; That assumption being “when LLMs get better”. They don’t say what that ceiling is, but then go on to say “it can’t represent someone in court”. Why not? It can reason about more law and precedent than any human can right? As a society surely we want a fair and by the book justice system?

Look at GPT 5.4 and Opus, we’re clearly hitting diminishing returns already and these guys are pumping unsustainable amounts of money into them.

I’m bullish on AI, it’s been a net positive for me and my team. All I see here though is propaganda disguised as science to convince businesses to shrink their engineering budgets and redirect it to AI companies.

TL;DR: AI company says AI is amazing, more at 10.

bargainbin··on GPT-5.4
Anecdotal, but I asked Claude the other day about how to dilute my medication (HCG) and it flat out refused and started lecturing me about abusing drugs.

I copy and pasted into ChatGPT, it told me straight away, and then for a laugh said it was actually a magical weight loss drug that I'd bought off the dark web... And it started giving me advice about unregulated weight loss drugs and how to dose them.

bargainbin··on Anthropic Education the AI Fluency Index
I’m not alone in finding this against the claims of the product right?

Claude is meant to be so clever it can replace all white collar work in the next n-years, but also “you’re not using it right?” Which one is it?

bargainbin··on US plans online portal to bypass content bans in Europe and elsewhere
No, people are being arrested for making malicious communications. They would have suffered the same punishment if they had used email, letter, graffiti on a billboard.

You cannot go around threatening to harm people without repercussions.

bargainbin··on Monosketch
Not the author but I'm making a similar tool currently, and the reality is no because of the nature of it being character based.

You can theoretically have "artistic" polygons where it renders using a mixture of characters to emulate how that grid would be filled if a certain shaped was laid over it but the end result wouldn't be very functional for the purposes of diagramming.

bargainbin··on Why software stocks are getting pummelled
Don’t forget the salary for every dev team having the Atlassian Jira Jockey to mess around with the board all day and make sure the next 7 epics worth of tickets are in the 9 columns and in prioritised order.

Where would we be without them!?

bargainbin··on Ozempic is changing the foods Americans buy
There was an interesting study recently that showed coming off actually caused weight re-gain an order of magnitude worse than yo-yo dieting.

The media spun it as GLP-1’s being evil and pointless, quelle surprise, but really it hints towards obesity being more than just “fixing your relationship with food” and acknowledging that there is more we don’t understand about why some people are fatter than others despite similar lifestyles.

Going to be an interesting decade as more data is gathered on these, that’s for sure.

bargainbin··on Ozempic is changing the foods Americans buy
We’re seeing similar in the UK, fast food restaurants are having to adapt and dieting companies have outright collapsed.

Sounds conspiratorial, but when you look at the revenue impact this is having, the deluge of baseless articles about it making your eyes fall out or “users who stop taking it gain the weight back” or whatever malady they can make a tenuous link to, it all make a lot more sense.

The biggest food companies do not want people to be thinner. They want people to buy their low-quality, high-margin products.

bargainbin··on I switched from VSCode to Zed
I switched to Helix and ZelliJ, ZelliJ really allows you to setup some IDE features and helix is like the surface layer of Vi.

Combined it becomes a very powerful setup!

bargainbin··on It's hard to justify Tahoe icons
Clearly a generation of mobile-first designers not understanding how desktops are used.

It’s dreadful, it still blows my mind that out of Windows, macOS and Linux, my Linux desktop with KDE has the most premium experience now.

bargainbin··on It's hard to justify Tahoe icons
My main gripe is that the visual shenanigans alone were enough of a change, why rearrange the buttons?! In the early iOS beta, the new tab button was at the top of Safari, as far away from your thumbs as it could be.

Genuinely believe Apple’s design team are rudderless or have unintentionally been forced to produce something to justify someone’s career, because this whole thing is disastrous.

bargainbin··on Stranger Things creator says turn off “garbage” settings
Everyone already died a painful and cruel death for the first four seasons, that was what made the show so compelling to watch.

From that point on, everyone gets 10 inch thick plot armour, and then the last two episodes skip a whole season or two of character development to try and box the show off quickly.

bargainbin··on Valve is running Apple's playbook in reverse
If they used the learning of the Steam Machines ARM translation layer to ship a Steam Phone, I’d jump on it day one even if all it had was basic phone apps and games.
bargainbin··on Please just try HTMX
> That's HTMX. I didn't write JavaScript to make those work. I wrote HTML attributes.

Well you didn’t write standard HTML attributes, you wrote custom attributes that are picked up by a JS framework, so potentially the worst of both worlds depending on your problem space.

Having tried HTMX a few times, the problem is firmly in creating a backend that feeds it properly. It’s a disjointed experience for anything more complicated than updating content.

bargainbin··on Denial of service and source code exposure in React Server Components
Should just use Svelte.
bargainbin··on Thoughts on Go vs. Rust vs. Zig
My experience aligns with this, although I often find the error being used for non-errors which is somewhat of an overcorrection, i.e. db drivers returning “NoRows” errors when no rows is a perfectly acceptable result of a query.

It’s odd that the .unwrap() hack caused a huge outage at Cloudflare, and my first reaction was “that couldn’t happen in Go haha” but… it definitely could, because you can just ignore returned values.

But for some reason most people don’t. It’s like the syntax conveys its intent clearly: Handle your damn errors.

bargainbin··on Bazzite: Operating System for Linux gaming
> Now, whenever you would've actually shut down the project is a different story, but your messaging was very clear.

The messaging was very clear that the upstream change would make Bazzite almost untenable.

It was a criticism of Fedora, not a threat to quit.

bargainbin··on X Just Accidentally Exposed a Covert Influence Network Targeting Americans
Wild reading the news earlier to see Iran is making a concerted effort to influence Scottish Independence.

Is the idea to weaken the UK? To what end?

Also, if it’s being done to us, surely we’re doing it back? The CIA and MI6 are no stranger to destabilising regimes, and yet surely it would be more common knowledge if we were employing people to post anti-Putin propaganda on Russian forums?

bargainbin··on A file format uncracked for 20 years
Exactly that - once it’s shipped it’s shipped. Doesn’t matter if the code is “clean” or “maintainable” or whatever.

The longer it’s not released for sale, the more debt you’re incurring paying the staff.

I’ve worked with a few ex-game devs and they’re always great devs, specifically at optimising. They’re not great at the “forward maintainability” aspect though because they’ve largely never had experience having to do it.

bargainbin··on Open-source Zig book
> No hidden control flow: Zig has no hidden allocators, goroutines…

Neither of those things are control flow, and yet again I’m reading a pro-Zig text taking a dig at Go without any substance to the criticism.

Also funny having a dig at goroutines when Zig is all over the place with its async implementation.

bargainbin··on Steam Machine
I think the person you’re replying to has made a mistake: I looked extensively last night and there’s no mention of the Steam Controller having dual stage triggers.

However, the Steam Frame Controllers do. Seems weird they would add them on the Frame wands but not the actual controller replacing the controller that does have them.

bargainbin··on Checkout.com hacked, refuses ransom payment, donates to security labs
The intent of the South Park sketch was to lampoon that BP were (/are) willingly doing awful things and then give corpo apology statements when caught.

Here, Checkout has been the victim of a crime, just as much as their impacted customers. It’s a loss for everyone involved except the perpetrators. Using words like “betrayed” as if Checkout wilfully mislead its customers, is a heavy accusation to level.

At a point, all you can do is apologise, offer compensation if possible, and plot out how you’re going to prevent it going forward.

bargainbin··on Homebrew no longer allows bypassing Gatekeeper for unsigned/unnotarized software
Windows and Mac competing to see who can push all their users, and upping the ante every week this year it seems.
bargainbin··on Steam Machine
First thing I checked for! I feel like it's such a niche feature but also distinctive. It's actually a "necessity" for a proper Gamecube emulation experience, which has the two stage shoulder buttons.

Like you, I also used this for boost on Rocket League and it was surprisingly intuitive. You can map it to the triggers lowest threshold to emulate it but without the tactile bump to rest against it just won't work.

bargainbin··on Laptops with Stickers
Such a bunch of negative folks in here. I personally stickerbomb every company laptop I get knowing full well some poor guy in IT is going to have to scrape it all off.

I once had a loaner thinkpad for two days whilst my MacBook was bricked by Jamf - best believe they got that thing back covered.

His face when I handed it back to him, priceless.

Side note: What is that massive yellow CYBER sticker that seems to be on 80% of them? Feel like I’ve missed some kind of political movement.

bargainbin··on How I fell in love with Erlang
> (mailbox = mailbox + message) is so simple!

The author did not say this at all, they barely even touched on capabilities of erlang/OTP. Their focus was on the functional syntax of Erlang.

> For instance, in head(sort(list)), will the whole list be sorted, or will the smallest element be returned?

Your point isn’t clear. The functions have a clear nested call sequence, take a list, sort it, get the head.

Also how is it any different than Haskells `head (sort list)`?

bargainbin··on Zig and the design choices within
Advent of code is coming, maybe lots of people looking for a language to learn with it?
bargainbin··on Ticker: Don't die of heart disease
Anyone note where to get this full blood panel done in the UK? I’ve got issues with high blood pressure and swelling in the lower extremities. Blood tests and ECG showed nothing.

Both granddads died in their 50s from heart attacks. I’m convinced I have an issue with my circulation but the blood tests I had done doesn’t seem to cover everything stated here.
