bargainbin··on A brief history of the Bloomberg terminal
My god have you ever had those people try to add keyboard shortcuts? You start to question if they have ever used a keyboard at all.

But how many of those games are console shifters? Hell back in the day I finally caved and bought a PS3 because of MGS4. Alright it may only shift say, 60% of the units, but if more of those units included a console purchase too then the onward value is huge.
bargainbin··on Version control second coming
I can accept the authors bias, but all credibility was gone when I read “AccuRev was a fantastic system”. AccuRevs UX was akin to putting your face next to a farting anus and breathing deeply.

Honestly felt like I was missing some sort of satirical masterpiece as the author gleefully declared all the up and coming projects that are going to scatter open source projects to the four corners of the Earth.

Maybe they’ve been so locked into version control tooling as a career they’ve missed the bigger picture, but version control before git ubiquity sucked. Not saying Git is perfect but come on, are our memories so short?

bargainbin··on iPhone Duo
Apple has had a patent[1] for like a decade at this point which involved placing an iPhone into a slot on a laptop so it could be used in a laptop form, with the phone itself serving as the touchpad.

[1]: https://www.tomsguide.com/news/apple-patents-device-that-doc...

Edit to add: the phone itself is intended to be the main processing unit, the “laptop” is just a screen and keyboard.

Because in Celsius, 0 lets you know the water outside will likely be frozen and 100 lets you know the water in your pot is likely boiling. This is utterly useless information.

It is nowhere near as useful day to day as knowing 0°F means a very specific saltwater brine mixture will likely be frozen, and 90°F is kind of as hot as your insides. Or 96. Or 98.6 as the third revision decided.

bargainbin··on Ambient CSS v3 – Blender meets CSS
I had no idea “eyebrows” was a term until I started using Claude to generate designs. That model is eyebrow crazy, every section of the output has them.

Even comprehensive design skills like impeccable miss filtering them out (it only detects “eyebrow chips” and not the prolific barrage of basic eyebrows.)

bargainbin··on Tmp.0ut Volume 5
Not Phrack but I did find it, ThugCrowd [1]!

[1]: https://thugcrowd.com/archive.html

Edit to add, apparently one of the ThugCrowd people is part of tmp.0ut so that would explain why my mind immediately went there.

Love the aesthetic. There was another ezine like this years ago focused on cybersecurity, I’ve forgotten its name now but the ASCII art involved was top notch.

Does anyone have any idea? It was definitely when Twitter was still Twitter as I remember reaching out to them about their ASCII art.

bargainbin··on [dead]
Bailed after the first paragraph, AI is increasingly becoming harder to read.
bargainbin··on Finger: the 1971 social network that never died
Those commas do appear to be a load-bearing seam for the sentence — that’s not guaranteed proof, it’s just strong indication.

console.print(“these logs are a load-bearing seam, do not remove”)

It’s foolproof, I tells ya.

bargainbin··on Ruff v0.16.0 – Significant new updates – 413 default rules up from 59
I’m not entirely sure what you mean by a fragmented ecosystem? Go has first-party formatting and linting and the language is deliberately restricted to ensure it is written in a certain way, even when written by complete novices.

Compare that to Python or TypeScript which are Wild West languages without opinionated first-party tooling, and it’s clear why Ruff/Biome feel great.

You just wouldn’t get that same high with Go.

bargainbin··on Resetting Xbox
Halo Infinite was the moment I knew Xbox was gone. The core game engine was the best Halo has ever felt, but everything around it reeked of incompetent management.

Giving a player a reward for putting in effort is one of the fundamental principles of game design. If you remove all the rewards, what incentive do they have to play?

Their response to player backlash which was essentially “deny, defer, gaslight and ignore” killed the online community for it within a couple of months, and I think they dropped what little content support it had within two years as well, after initially marketing it as a long-term “live service game”.

Blatant incompetence, how Microsoft ever let itself get in this state I’ll never understand.

Also I can’t even remember the campaign story. Was there an angel or something? It was a cliffhanger about some new enemy, as if they’ll ever make another game?

I just remembered the monstrosity that is the Halo TV series as well now, ah god… it’s been a rough decade.

bargainbin··on Pondering routing more of my traffic via nodes outside the UK
Incorrect, I don't have social media and tell them as such, it's never an issue.

Funny, this gave me strong manosphere vibes as well, despite ostensibly not being about using misogyny to extract wealth from incels.
bargainbin··on Show HN: Home Maker: Declare Your Dev Tools in a Makefile
If you haven’t tried it, I highly recommend Mise. It manages everything at the user level so it’s not as “all encompassing” as Nix and is readily compatible with immutable distros.

https://mise.jdx.dev/

Your solution is akin to putting your dotfiles in the code repo, which is going to cause issues with languages with poor version compatibility (such as node and python) when switching between old projects.

Also, bold of you to assume developers know make and bash just because they’re using Linux!

bargainbin··on IBM Announces Strategic Collaboration with Arm
I work for a big international corp. We pay IBM a blankest sum annually because it’s that hard to quantify just how much we rely on their services and licensing costs.

Licensing of course just being typical rent seeking behaviour but their services are valuable given the financial impact if one of their solutions goes down on us (which is very rarely)

bargainbin··on Our commitment to Windows quality
I’m daily driver Linux now after three decades of Windows usage. I have Bazzite-dx (Fedora based) on my desktop and Cachy (Arch based) on my laptop, both using KDE Plasma for the GUI.

I can’t place my finger on it, but Bazzite feels more “coherent” despite using the exact same GUI.

I had the misfortune of using a Windows 11 machine the other day and I didn’t even recognise it. They’ve taken a huge misstep with the Copilot rollout.

bargainbin··on Astral to Join OpenAI
This is a logical conclusion of most open source tools in a capitalist economy, it's been this way for decades.

Equivalent or better tools will pop up eventually, heck if AI is so fantastic then you could just make one of your own, be the change you want to see in the world, right?

bargainbin··on US private credit defaults hit record 9.2% in 2025, Fitch says
Luckily debt will be solved by the power of AGI, right? Just one more data centre! One more GPU! It can nearly write a basic three tier application with only 10 critical security vulnerabilities all by itself!

Definitely think we’re in for a rough year financial prospects wise, and doesn’t even feel like we recovered from the 2008 crash properly.

bargainbin··on Ask HN: How to be alone?
Had the same crisis - I split from my long term partner after 14 years at 33 years old. Was happy to be alone for the first time in my life then within two weeks the dread of loneliness started creeping in.

My advice is find a social outlet - Group exercise like CrossFit and Run Clubs help a lot and cater to all people.

Also - restarting your life alone is expensive, but you will never again have a cheaper cost of living. Take the opportunity to save so you can let the good times roll when you find someone.

Also also - I had zero luck on dating apps, I think their prime days are over, and they’re superficial. Don’t bother with that negative feedback loop.

bargainbin··on Ask HN: How to be alone?
“Born alone” is beyond reductive, it’s plain wrong. You literally come out of another human who you must then feed on for months in order to survive.
bargainbin··on Labor market impacts of AI: A new measure and early evidence
Much like LLM output, this seems convincing at first glance but it’s stating assumption as fact; That assumption being “when LLMs get better”. They don’t say what that ceiling is, but then go on to say “it can’t represent someone in court”. Why not? It can reason about more law and precedent than any human can right? As a society surely we want a fair and by the book justice system?

Look at GPT 5.4 and Opus, we’re clearly hitting diminishing returns already and these guys are pumping unsustainable amounts of money into them.

I’m bullish on AI, it’s been a net positive for me and my team. All I see here though is propaganda disguised as science to convince businesses to shrink their engineering budgets and redirect it to AI companies.

TL;DR: AI company says AI is amazing, more at 10.
