baremetal··on Convincing Voters That Less Choice Means Stronger Democracy Isn't Easy
I'm not sure they thought that far ahead.
baremetal··on Texas' border standoff with feds continues, despite U.S. Supreme Court order
The Framers included both Article IV, § 4, which promises that the federal government “shall protect each [State] against invasion,” and Article I, § 10, Clause 3, which acknowledges “the States' sovereign interest in protecting their borders.”

I take it to mean the creation account is from God's perspective not ours.

I don't have the slightest problem with modern science and it's reckoning of creation.

The universe started with light in both accounts.

Not at all! Let God be true, and every human being a liar. As it is written: “So that you may be proved right when you speak and prevail when you judge.” Romans 3:4

Israel was recreated in one day. As prophesied.

"Who has ever heard of such things? Who has ever seen things like this? Can a country be born in a day or a nation be brought forth in a moment? Yet no sooner is Zion in labor than she gives birth to her children." Isaiah 66:8

On May 14, 1948, David Ben-Gurion, the head of the Jewish Agency, proclaimed the establishment of the State of Israel. U.S. President Harry S. Truman recognized the new nation on the same day.[1]

>The Biblical concept of Hell as we know it (the place of eternal punishment) didn't emerge until the New Testament as it was in a way redundant.

The OT did have a concept of Hell. It is called "Sheol"[1].

"Therefore Sheol enlarges its throat, and opens wide its enormous jaws, and down go Zion’s nobles and masses, her revelers and carousers!"

Isaiah 5:14

"As drought and heat consume the melting snow, so Sheol steals those who have sinned. "

Job 24:19

I could go on.

>The Genesis creation story states that God created the universe in 6 days, but any attempt to demonstrate that it is false will have believers declaring that a "day" is not a precise measurement of time.

The Bible is rather clear that God doesn't measure time like humans do.

"But do not forget this one thing, dear friends: With the Lord a day is like a thousand years, and a thousand years are like a day."

2 Peter 3:8

baremetal··on Time to bring back asylums?
You are downplaying the role of an emergency use authorization. "Reasonable belief" sounds experimental to me. Otherwise they would've had all the information needed for FDA approval, it wouldn't have been predicated on belief, and it wouldn't have been labeled emergency use.

Why are you so adverse to accepting the reality of the situation?

"The process for issuing an EUA is different than an FDA approval. Under an EUA, the FDA authorizes uses of medical products based on a reasonable belief that the product may be effective based on the best evidence available at the time, without waiting for all the information that would be needed for an FDA approval."[1]

baremetal··on Remote Work to Wipe Out $800B from Office Values, McKinsey Says
Drilling big holes, cutting the slab etc.

Also if it is a tension slab you absolutely cannot cut into it.

baremetal··on Time to bring back asylums?
Emergency use authorization is experimental.

Otherwise it wouldn't be "emergency use".

baremetal··on Time to bring back asylums?
You need to give them a purpose.

The trades come to mind.

baremetal··on Important Coding Habits
I do body weight exercises and stretch every day. They are easy to do during breaks from coding, and don't require any special equipment.

I am really fond of the L-sit as it works so many muscle groups and makes for a strong core. It's something you may have to work up to though.

I also meditate. It is great for concentration and overall well-being.

baremetal··on Restoring nature is good for farmers, fisheries and food security
Speaking of avoiding discomfort.

If you have a lawn, you should cultivate it with vegetables. It's easy to produce a surplus that you can share.

Unless you want to avoid putting any sweat equity in...

baremetal··on Restoring nature is good for farmers, fisheries and food security
No I started raising my own beef.

Restorative agriculture for the win.

I won't be eating crickets or vegan burgers or whatever zealots think I should eat. Or be deprived of eating.

baremetal··on New laws trying to criminalize filming cops
Correct, a single individual or small group would get clobbered.
baremetal··on New laws trying to criminalize filming cops
Tell that to the Mexican government.

In the long run they will run out of jackboots willing to risk not coming home to their families at the end of the day.
baremetal··on Texas worker accused of being on drugs was dying of heatstroke
I drink approx 1 gallon of water every two hours or so when I work outside in the heat.

Best to work 6am to noon rather than afternoon.

The sun intensity is worse than the heat, imo.

baremetal··on Ask HN: What are you doing to fight climate change?
I raise my own beef (just a couple) and eat it as much as possible. And I grow virtually all my own vegetables.

Grow your own food, cuts out industrial ag and the massive transportation required to move the food.

If you have a lawn, turn it into a garden. The yields will be more than your family can eat and you can share it. Unless you don't want to put any sweat in and just want some easy feel good solution..

baremetal··on Refusing to teach kids math will not improve equity
Affirmative action meets the definition of systemic racism.

Policies and practices that exist throughout a whole society or organization, and that result in and support a continued unfair advantage to some people and unfair or harmful treatment of others based on race[1]

baremetal··on We are wasting up to 20% of our time on computer problems, says study
I put my parents on Linux about 10 years ago.

They don't know the difference. And I rarely if ever have to fix anything.

baremetal··on Why Buy Anything You Could Borrow (Especially If You’re Renting)?
Maybe if you live in a apartment I suppose.

But as a landowner and a business owner, having the right tools and materials. at hand is essential.

If you live a lifestyle conducive to renting things then more power to you.

Its just not for me, and never will be.

baremetal··on When the facts change, I change my mind. What do you do?
Paradoxical dogmatism.

It's a paradox because dogmatism typically implies a fixed perspective, whereas a refusal to be dogmatic typically suggests an openness to various perspectives.

baremetal··on Office real estate crash will be so sharp, values unlikely to recover by 2040
Not if it is a slab. You have to saw cut the slab and run new plumbing and pour back.

And if it is a tension slab, you absolutely cannot cut into it.

baremetal··on Will lower birth rates affect the infrastructure of cities?
I hear you, it does suck having to drive a bit if you need something.

>I don’t think being a helpless idiot correlates with living in any particular place.

It isn't so much that you or I or others aren't helpless people, it's more that in the city you are surrounded by helpless people. Just due to the shear population density.

baremetal··on Will lower birth rates affect the infrastructure of cities?
Well the rural area where I'm living is booming, and all the people around me have 3 and 4 young children. And surprisingly they do it on 1 income.

That sounds sustainable to me. Can't do that in the city on 1 income.

If you like the city you should stay in the city. Don't listen to me. I don't know what the future holds any more than you do.

But I'm hedging against a continuing gradual decrease in the standard of living in the US and a decline in infrastructure and general lawlessness.

That is near impossible to do in the city.

You will be eating whatever is available. You drink the water that is available. And you get to depend on entirely on law enforcement for your safety and security. And if your roof leaks you pray that you can get someone to show up.

Me personally? I'm going to ensure my own well-being, not rely entirely on corporations and government.
