bardak··on The European VAT Is Not a Discriminatory Tax Against US Exports
By the same argument US states sales taxes are also tariffs since most of them are supposed to be paid on imported goods as well.
bardak··on The origins of 60-Hz as a power frequency
I still haven't seen a single 20A domestic appliance though
bardak··on The Toyota Prius transformed the auto industry
I had a loaner Ford Bronco Sport when I was having some maintenance on my hybrid. It had a 8 speed transmission and a turbo. Going from the super smooth eCTV to a vehicle that would jerk from shift changes/turbo when you just thought about touching the gas pedal has has put me off buying a vehicle with a normal transmission
bardak··on React 19
I think I despise throbers and spinners more than slow page loads at this point.
bardak··on X ordered to pay €550k to Irish employee fired after yes-or-resign ultimatum
While that might seem generous in the US that is not universal and still woefully minimal. All fathers in Canada are entitled to a minimum of 5 weeks of leave let alone the maximum of 18 months leave mothers
bardak··on Using SIMD for Parallel Processing in Rust
I feel like most languages could use simd in the standard library. We have all this power in the vector units of our CPUs that compilers struggle to use but yet we also don't make it easy to do manually
bardak··on First randomized trial of Ozempic for alcoholism shows big drops in drinking
I am curious if the benefits for alcohol addiction are from the reduction in appetite or reducing the actual dependence on alcohol. Either way still good to have another relative safe way to treat alcohol addiction.
bardak··on California is about to side with PG&E – again – to kill community solar projects
I know BC hydro buys cheap power from other utilities to keep the reservoirs as full as possible. If California has excessive Solar power it could be used to keep the hydro reservoirs in BC, Washington, Oregon, and northern California full for other times.
bardak··on Veo
I would like a bit more convincing that the text watermark will not be noticeable. AI text already has issues with using certain words to frequently. Messing with the weights seems like it might make the issue worse
bardak··on TwitchAdSolutions – Blocking Twitch Ads
My theory is that they would rather get more individual streamer subs for $5 and the streams do all the advertising for these for them as a plus.
bardak··on TwitchAdSolutions – Blocking Twitch Ads
This is a big reason that I will watch a stream on Youtube if a streamer simulcasts on both. The Youtube player is just such a better experience than Twitch's and I already pay for Youtube premium so I can also avoid ads.
bardak··on U.S. sues Apple, accusing it of maintaining an iPhone monopoly
It looks like the DOJ doesn't believe that the closed marketplace doesn't add value to consumers or businesses but only to Apple themselves.

I think the crux of the DOJs argument is that apple is using their dominate marketshare to rent seek and create artificial restrictions preventing competition with their own products.

bardak··on U.S. sues Apple, accusing it of maintaining an iPhone monopoly
The most compelling argument I can see is that due to its market share businesses cannot avoid dealing with the app store and it's fees.
bardak··on B.C. looks to standardize multiplex designs as latest fix to housing crisis
The wierd thing is that while Vancouver specials aren't small they are not huge either. I find it hard to picture how small the average Vancouver home would be if people had to live on half the area that most houses had.
bardak··on B.C. looks to standardize multiplex designs as latest fix to housing crisis
The latter. It is the minimum the municipalities can restrict density to. They can allow higher densities but can't restrict density below the minimum.
bardak··on B.C. looks to standardize multiplex designs as latest fix to housing crisis
I believe that the units will all be market rentals but it is not uncommon for urban first nation bands to sell leasehold housing on their land as they cannot sell the land outright as per the Indian Act.

It gets a lot more complicated when you delve into bands such that the Tsawwassen First Nation who have new modern treaties and don't fall under the Indian Act but they are more of an exception.

bardak··on B.C. looks to standardize multiplex designs as latest fix to housing crisis
The biggest legislative changes that preceded this is rezoning practically every single family lot to allow 4-plexes by right so that some charlatan can't come by and stop you from building it. This is just creating affordable preapprove designs to make it easier to take advantage of the rezoning.

The government is also forcing rezoning around transit stations and bus exchanges for much higher densities with heights of between 8-20 stories (or higher based on municipal planning) allowed within 800m.

While not a monorail there is a 16km elevated train extension going on in the suburbs

bardak··on B.C. looks to standardize multiplex designs as latest fix to housing crisis
Yeah it is almost entirely province wide and pretty much every lot is going to be allowed to have 4 dwellings on it. Only the smallest lots (<280m^2 or <3000sqft) will be limited to 3 dwellings. The 6 dwelling regulations are still to come but I am optimistic they will be pretty permissive.

The other thing that I think a lot of people are glossing over is the requirement for the municipalities to plan and rezone for 20 years of growth every 5 years. No more having to apply for rezoning for a project that is in line with what the cities have planned.

bardak··on OSS Game Engines are increasing their stars on GitHub due to Unity's missteps
I think the core reason for how intense the outrage is is the installations are completely unpredictable for developers. If Unity had went to a revenue split it simple royalty per sale people would be upset but ultimately it would have died down. It's the unpredictabilty that is really the problem.
bardak··on The new toll to drive into Manhattan won't change much by itself
Completely agree with everything you said. If anything the biggest complaint I would have is that it seems like they only plan to charge people entering Manhattan and not cars that registered in Manhattan.
bardak··on The U.S. housing market vs. the Canadian housing market
>The issue is at the municipal level (mainly), and the provincial level (less so).

The municipalities are creations of the province so personally I would assign them just as much blame. The provinces have the most power to address the issue but seem to be happy to hide behind the Feds and Cities.

bardak··on The U.S. housing market vs. the Canadian housing market
Even better in Canada since capital gains on your primary residence is not taxed at all.
bardak··on Htmx is part of the GitHub Accelerator
Sounds like reasonable places to strip out stuff while keeping the fundamental features. I think the history support would be important enough to keep though.
bardak··on Htmx is part of the GitHub Accelerator
Will HTMX 2.0 have a smaller bundle size since you are removing things? I don't think HTMX is too big or anything but I have a love tiny libraries.

And on that note do you think that a smaller striped down version of HTMX is feasible like petite-vue is for vue

bardak··on Htmx is part of the GitHub Accelerator
That's my thought as well. Anything that needs new data from the server uses HTMX and if you need to manipulate something already on the page use Alpine, Jquery, vanillajs, or whatever other framework you prefer.
bardak··on A room-temperature superconductor? New developments
Just to be a bit of a realist do we know if this material is malleable or practical to make intifrates circuits? Is it possible to make large single pieces of it? Don't get me wrong even if the awnser to all of these is no it's still probably the biggest single material science breakthrough since the transistors but we aren't necessarily going to be applicable to all the theoretical applications of semiconductors
bardak··on Binance lays off over 1k Employees
From my view there is room for sustainable crypto businesses but they get crowed out by the big unsustainable crypto businesses that were entirely relying on huge gains in price.

That being said whatever practical uses there are for crypto is entirely detached from the value of crypto.

bardak··on Aspartame: Once More Unto the Breach
Subject then downs an entire bag of Doritos without complaint
bardak··on Aspartame: Once More Unto the Breach
I don't hate the sugar based pop but I can only drink a small amount before they are way too sweet for me. The other thing that get me is the sticky mouth feel that lingers afterwards.
bardak··on Tell HN: Twitter switched temporarily to rate limited mode
Thank you for shedding light on this. Twitters biggest financial problem prior to Elons purchase was growth. There loses were mainly them spending money on try to find an avenue of growth.
