bardak··on Canada will match US tariffs 'dollar for dollar' as trade talks break down
The American, and other auto makers, only manufacturers in Canada because the Canadian and American auto markets have been integrated for over 80 years. Removing Canada's access to the American market basically makes Canadian auto manufacturing uncompetitive since Canada isn't a big enough market to sustain a domestic auto market.
bardak··on My dad helped build North America's oat supply chain: Can it be remade?
The thing that gets me is that the price of oat milk is so completely divorced from what it cost to produce. It's absolutely wild that oat milk, made with one of the cheapest bulk grains, is as expensive as almond milk, made with an expensive nut.
bardak··on GLM 5.2 beats Claude in our benchmarks
100% agree and don't think it will come to that but I won't completely put it past this administration
bardak··on GLM 5.2 beats Claude in our benchmarks
Go after the hosts, 99% of people won't be able to run this locally even if they wanted to.
bardak··on GLM 5.2 beats Claude in our benchmarks
It would be extremely heavy handed but the administration has sanctioned the International Criminal Court judges such that they basically have no access to the Wests modern financial system. I think domestic US providers would have to deal with different ways but someone like Herzner could easily be cut off from the financial system if the administration doesn't feel that they are adequately blocking the model
bardak··on GLM 5.2 beats Claude in our benchmarks
They could ban payment processors from processing payments to any hosts of GML 5.2, despite the open weights the vast majority of people will be using cloud providers to get access since it is to heavy to host for 99% of people.

This would be extremely heavy handed and probably end up accelerating the loss of the virtual US monopoly of payment network. The reast of the world isn't going to let the US dictate that only they get the frontier models whether their US made or otherwise

bardak··on The smelly baby problem
Honestly the hardest part of changing diapers is when they get bigger and insists on wiggling everywhere while you are changing them
bardak··on Is it a pint?
But usually when that is the case they will use glassware that has a 20oz line on the glass with room for the head.
bardak··on Discord cuts ties with identity verification software, Persona
Their constant treadmill of paid cosmetics, for lack of a better term, that no one was asking for and at least monthly Nitro beg screen is pretty indicative that they are having issues making revue and are desperately throwing things at the wall to see what sticks.
bardak··on Iowa City made its buses free. Traffic cleared, and so did the air
While we should never expect public transit to be self funding removing fares removes the ability for transit funds to scale with ridership, there is a reason that farebox ratios are correlated with ridership.
bardak··on Canada loses its measles-free status, with US on track to follow
I still can't believe that Alberta is charging for COVID vaccines purely for political reasons.
bardak··on Drawing Text Isn't Simple: Benchmarking Console vs. Graphical Rendering
I was wondering if Casey would end up a mention on this topic.
bardak··on The Quiet Driving Force Behind Rising Curtailment Costs in Great Britain
> Same could be said for part of bus networks

The only part of municipal/ regional bus network that is suitable for privatisation in a high labour cost country is contracting out operations. Ticketing, route planning andscheduling all should be under a central governmental authority. There is a reason that, outside of London, England has some of the worst bus services in the developed world

bardak··on GPT-5
I feel like we need to move on from using the same test on models since as time goes on the information about these specific test is out there in the training data and while i am not saying that it's happened in this case there is nothing stopping model developers from adding extra data for theses tests directly in the training data to make their models seem better than they are
bardak··on The anti-abundance critique on housing is wrong
The vast majority of "luxury" properties are just regular property that spend a marginal amount on nicer appliances and finishing.
bardak··on Who has the fastest F1 website (2021)
Same here. It's not so hard, if your image isn't flat colours and has any "noise" use jpg.
bardak··on A Typology of Canadianisms
The one subtle difference I've noticed between Canadian and American English is on school grades. American say "first grade" where as Canada say "grade one".
bardak··on What Microchip doesn't (officially) tell you about the VSC8512
One of the biggest advantages I saw from the Raspberry Pi rp series for amateurs is they they have great documentation.
bardak··on Meta invests $14.3B in Scale AI to kick-start superintelligence lab
He would still be unbelievably rich even if Meta went bankrupt. He is in the unique position to have majority control of one of the world's largest tech companies and can pretty much use it to do what ever he wants. I doubt he cares much about Facebook past it's ability to generate money at this point.
bardak··on Coventry Very Light Rail
Unfortunately the Coventry VLRT is all about aesthetics over actually transit benefits. If the they were concerned about being useful transit the vehicle would have capacity higher than an articulated bus. Instead the main benefit of Trams/LRT over buses, capacity, is sacrificed leaving no real benefits. You can see the same thing with the Obama ere streetcars in the USA where most of them proved no real benefits over the buses the run alongside them but at least they retained the capacity even if it was never needed.
bardak··on Coventry Very Light Rail
Yeah but you could do that with a bus today without miltiions in infrastructure spending
bardak··on Office is too slow, so Microsoft is making it load at Windows startup
My favorite GNOME developer's hill to die on is their refusal to implement a system tray or work with the rest of the Linux desktop community to create an alternative to the system tray. Don't get me wrong there has been a abuse of the system tray but the refusal to acknowledge that there is a use case for persistent notifications or status indicators is ridiculous. there suggestion is that notifications are the solution is so inadequate. It's pretty telling that their arguments aren't sound when they have chosen to implement traditional system tray items such as a battery indicator and volume indicator as built in items on the task bar but they dismiss the idea that a chat app status indicator would be useful.
bardak··on Reports of the death of California High-Speed Rail have been greatly exaggerated
Even if you insist on going through the cities in the valley they chose a construction sequence that takes the longest time to show any process. If they fast tracked LA-Bakersfield they could have extended the Amtrak San Joaquin service to LA by now. Concentrat on the SF-Merced section next and then you can work on the Merced-Bakersfield piece meal.
bardak··on “Vibe Coding” vs. Reality
I think it comes down to the fact that LLMs are powerful tools but just like a really good saw can be extremely helpful to a talented carpenter to an untrained person it useless unless they actually learn to do the job
bardak··on The European VAT Is Not a Discriminatory Tax Against US Exports
Other countries are not going to let the USA determine domestic tax policies.

If they did remove VAT from items imported from the United States it would lead to the absurd situation where a US merchant could import an item from Germany without VAT and then sell it to consumers in Germany without VAT undercutting German retailers and denying the German government their consumption tax revenue

bardak··on The European VAT Is Not a Discriminatory Tax Against US Exports
VAT is not a tarrif or trade tax it is simply appling a consumption tax to all goods foreign and domestic.
bardak··on The European VAT Is Not a Discriminatory Tax Against US Exports
The US having a less efficient tax system isn't the fault of the EU
bardak··on The European VAT Is Not a Discriminatory Tax Against US Exports
By that logic imported items should not have US state sales taxes apply.
bardak··on The European VAT Is Not a Discriminatory Tax Against US Exports
The main purpose of VAT is to not fully apply a consumption tax multiple times through manufacturing and distraction
bardak··on The European VAT Is Not a Discriminatory Tax Against US Exports
Most US state sales taxes also apply to imported products so should othe countries consider that a tariff as well?
