We have agreements with the artists and labels.

Sadly we don't have Passion Pit in the index yet :(. I know, very bad of us. They and most every other band will be imported soon.

Thanks! We'll check that out in FF 2

"visual seems pretty disconnected" can you give me some more specifics. That'd be really helpful!

Thanks for the feedback! We'll be importing a bunch more artists in the near future so "the wombats" etc will give results. The recs are more "digg like" so there's a bit of a cold-start problem with some of quality. Once we see how people are using it we'll tweak the algo. We'll be adding Connect soon and are looking into who we can leverage the FB likes but there are limitation with the callbacks.
bandhunt··on ASK HN: How do you motivate a lazy co-founder?
Honestly, I don't mean to be rude, but maybe you should get out of the startup world - or work really hard on getting away from the 9-5 mentality. Startups are about ultra-productivity period!
bandhunt··on Freemium Model
Thanks for the article! Any thoughts on breaking a premium service into smaller (bite-sized) offerings?

See my ASK HN: http://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=1436734

bandhunt··on Ask HN: freemium services - are multiple subscription options better?
thanks. good point on the pro end user. I'm not looking so much for advice on "tiers", but if I should split out the premium services into multiple premium services.

eg: evernote could split their premium service into two services: - supersized uploads ($2.50/mo) - advanced collaboration ($2.50/mo)

bandhunt··on Ask HN: freemium services - are multiple subscription options better?
Yeah, good advice. I always try to simplify things, so this makes sense. One thought was that It may be easier to convert users if there are focused cheaper plans that meet a specific need. Wonder if anyone has data on this?
bandhunt··on If I Launched a Startup
Why waste time incorporating? I'd just put it under some umbrella LLC (cheap & quick) until it has traction. After traction then you can move to C corp only if it's necessary to raise capital.
bandhunt··on Did rubyonrails.org get hijacked?
If you want the api docs you can search them here in the meantime: http://apidock.com/rails/search

rubyonrails.com doesn't seem to have the api docs anywhere.

bandhunt··on Your web app needs to be ten times better than the competition
broad generalization - cost of switching varies GREATLY depending the type of service.
bandhunt··on Apparently, Mark Zuckerberg Still Writes Code
Yeah, that's what I assumed. He probably just misses coding and decided to do something for a demo
bandhunt··on Booted out of Bootup Labs
That really sucks! But dude, why give up on the idea? you're selling the domain and moving on? Incubators aren't necessary.. keep plugging away and launch anyway.
bandhunt··on How I Ran An Ad on Fox News via Google TV Ads
If they don't go straight to their comp then they usually won't remember - with a new brand that is. And despite what our habits may be most people don't have a laptop open while watching TV. It was not scientific, but we saw ZERO uptick in sign ups while running millions of TV impressions. I would never run TV ads trying to get traffic for an unknown web startup again.
bandhunt··on How I Ran An Ad on Fox News via Google TV Ads
Mostly targeting by time and show (which is demographic by nature). There was some geographic stuff but it was pretty limited. You can create an account and browse without spending any money on it.
bandhunt··on How I Ran An Ad on Fox News via Google TV Ads
No URL. Just checked the times the ads would air and would look for any spike at all in traffic.

Less Avenged - a design firm in seattle. Great guys! Pretty cheap too. If you want an intro to them email me: burdick.dj@gmail.com
bandhunt··on How I Ran An Ad on Fox News via Google TV Ads
Google tv is easy, but bad for a startup. Converting brand new users from TV to the web when they don't know who you are is VERY hard.

I spent about $15K with my last company on google tv ads. It was a sports site and we got on espn etc. I poured over server logs and google analytics and didn't see any value from these ads - no spikes or noticeable conversions whatsoever.

CPM was super cheap so we got a TON of impressions.

We had a pretty decent ad too I think: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lUfTjtOQ8fM

It ended up being more of a vanity thing of having our ad on TV - total waste of time and money for us.

bandhunt··on Ask HN: What are you YC S10 applicants doing now?
Don't worry so much about getting into YC. I'm surprised at the amount of people who see this as make or break. If you're committed to building a great product you should just be building and iterating all the time.
bandhunt··on Making Disqus faster
It was rhetorical question. Build your app fast. Then optimize later, when you have scale.
bandhunt··on Making Disqus faster
Why optimize before they need to? They've done well so far with the current js loading and now they're optimizing b/c it's time.
bandhunt··on Will your application scale?
Because a facebook app and an iphone app aren't websites, yet they still have many of the same issues. Websites are becoming more and more like desktop applications and pigeonholing something as a "website" doesn't make sense, unless you are only talking about websites and it does not apply to any other web connected application.
