bandana··on Show HN: Gopilotty – Agent for Interactive Terminal
I've been wondering why Gemini CLI (and others) don't have this feature yet (letting the agent interact will full-screen/interactive terminal like VIM, or a running node server, a ruby CLI etc. so I tried to make a PoC to see what was the technical challenge. Gemini CLI did add a kind of "pseudo terminal" support (https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=45605823) but that still does not let the agent execute commands.

So gopilotty is my vision for a more "interactive" agent: a two pane window with a terminal on the left, a chatbot on the right, and the terminal is a combination of a "pseudo terminal" running bash, linked to a terminal emulator (for escape characters etc), and you can ask the bot to make edits in VIM (it knows how to exit !), run SQLite etc... Run it in a VM for safety :)

bandana··on Ask HN: What are you working on? (October 2025)
I'm making an OpenAI API proxy to stay within a spending limit (like 1$ per hour then a 429), AFAIK they only support "budget alerts" and I'm not comfortable releasing anything without a hard limit on the spend. https://github.com/goverture/goxy - Still a work in progress, I plan to support streaming as well and might support other providers if there's a demand for it.
bandana··on Donald Knuth's 2024 Christmas Lecture: Strong and Weak Components [video]
Yes that's the one ! I found it when I was trying to solve the tetraminos in The Talos Principle without looking for a game guide... I agree with OskarS it is a rewarding algorithm to implement.
bandana··on Donald Knuth's 2024 Christmas Lecture: Strong and Weak Components [video]
I was not aware of an update to this algorithm, I'll have to look it out.

The original dancing link is one of my favorite papers, you can really see Knuth's love for algorithms (it's not in every paper you see sentences like "This process causes the pointer variables inside the global data structure to execute an exquisitely choreographed dance"). I'm using it to generate crosswords (the horizontal and vertical words forming an exact cover of the grid).

bandana··on Scrum is the Symptom, not the Problem
This post resonates a lot with me, enough that I want to comment. After 5 years working with a full-time SM (3 different ones) in my team, I still have no idea what value they are supposed to provide, or how they fill their day once the daily meeting is over. As the author states it is completely demotivating to feel like you are carrying a parasite on your back ("robs engineers of their productivity and self-esteem").

Note that among the devs at my company, I'd say more than half don't seem to have a problem with it, or at least go with the flow, so I might be in the minority but I feel strongly enough about it to consider trying freelancing, I just hope I can demonstrate enough technical skills to be able to "insist on being in control of how [I] work" and still be hired...

bandana··on Nearly half of Covid patients haven’t fully recovered months later, study finds
Sure, if that's the way you want to interpret it... The way I see it it doesn't make any argument at all, the vaccine wasn't even available for the dates they consider ("starting in April 2020", hence the low vaccinated percentage), and by the time the vaccine was widely available, the virus had mutated into omicron, which is weak whether you are vaccinated or not.
bandana··on How to Be Useless
According to https://subredditstats.com/r/antiwork the subreddit was almost empty 2 years ago, and the subscriber count only started going in the past few months.
bandana··on Omicron variant was 73% of U.S. covid cases last week
I've heard that the Pangolin variant could be 10x more potent than the Haitian squirrel variant. Why is everyone still going out, lock us down now !
bandana··on Quebec shuts down schools, bars, gyms and more
81% of eligible population fully vaccinated. Do we still blame the anti-vax up to 100% ? Then who do we blame ?
bandana··on What's the point of lab-grown meat when we can just eat more vegetables? (2020)
600k excess deaths in the US, which is 0.02% of the 328 million population - ie, 99.98% of the us population survived the virus in 2020. Is it silly ?

Edit : it is, my bad, added a zero. It should read 0.2%, not 0.02%.

bandana··on The True Size of Africa (2015)
What would those regions be ? The Sahara isn't overpopulated if you look at the density of population, but it can't really sustain anybody. I'm sure there are some rain forests left to cut so we can grow more food for 1 or 2 billions extra people, but what's the end goal ? The world is overpopulated.
bandana··on Build on Redis Hackathon
I assume the judges will look at the product without looking at the author profile, why would it matter ?
bandana··on Has the era of overzealous cleaning finally come to an end?
I'm sure bleaching that beach in Spain helped tremendously.
bandana··on Ronald Reagan fires 11,359 air-traffic controllers (1981)
"you" being the 67 millions citizens that are not train conductors but need to move around, yes.
bandana··on At Home with Down Syndrome (2008)
I didn't like the article. It cherry picks mild cases and appeals to sentiments to refute the "bleak statistics" ("the learning impairments and health problems, the strong possibility of heart surgery in the first few months of life, the reputedly high divorce rate of parents of a child with special needs"). It also makes it looks like a bad thing that we manage to detect and prevent 90% of the births.

Add to that the quote at the end about "every family should have a down syndrom kid" and all I can think is there"'s a strong case of misery loves company here.

bandana··on It's Never a Bicycle Accident
"just barely avoid crushing or rolling over some crazy cyclist that falls on his damn bike right under my car"

You are supposed to respect a safe separation distance so that you don't "barely avoid crushing them" if something happen, not tailgate them. Since it happens every 3 months, consider if your driving might be at fault. If not for the cyclist, at least for the sake of not scratching your car, eh.

bandana··on Why northern Europe is so indebted
What matters is that the total population is growing, which push the prices up, I think mostly in already attractive and crowded cities ("Over a longer period, the population of the EU-27 grew from 354.5 million in 1960 to 447.7 million in 2020, an increase of 93.2 million people" https://ec.europa.eu/eurostat/statistics-explained/index.php...). That's 93 million people you have to house, and they are not going to the countrysides.
bandana··on Over 100 Scientists and Doctors Call for Increased Vitamin D to Combat Covid-19
Anybody from the "stay the f* at home" crowd want to chime in ? How do I make vitamin D when it is illegal/frowned at to be outside ?
bandana··on Cincinnati is home to the largest unused subway system in the world (2016)
I have been living in Saigon for the past 10 months. I'd say on the contrary, the first few days (what a tourist would experience) are the most stressful, but after a while you get used to it and it's alright.
bandana··on Cincinnati is home to the largest unused subway system in the world (2016)
I find taking the subway in Paris or NYC a terrible experience. The smell, the crowds, the stress... after a ride I need to take a shower. As an alternative, I prefer the South East Asia "motorbike centric" cities, if only they could switch to eletric it would be perfect.
bandana··on In Covid Surge, LA hospitals turn away ambulances and put patients in gift shops
I see many other comments in this thread saying that this was preventable, how so ? Looks like California tried a lot of things (stay at own orders, business closures etc) and they are not in a better shape than more "relaxed" states.
bandana··on Life on the inside as a ‘locked-in’ patient
I can't imagine the boredom he felt. Why didnt't they put him in front of netflix, or I don't know, any educational youtube channel, instead of television all day.
bandana··on Coronovirus: France to go into national lockdown for whole of November
I think that issue would have deserved a national debate and a referendum. Debating the pros and cons on TV and radio and letting the population decide for once - how many people did or didn't want a lockdown ?
bandana··on Covid-19 can damage hearts of some college athletes
But you went from an anectodal note to the conclusion "This virus isn't something you want to mess with even if you are young and fit." as if it was an universal truth, whereas if you're young and fit, the virus is at 99.9% something you can mess with without any consequence.
