baloki··on Grindr CEO Says AI Is Doing the Work of 200 Engineers
> The company has used the amount of code shipped as a major indicator of engineering output. > That metric is controversial.

An important point that’s buried quite a bit down the article. Grindr seems to be measuring AI success not on features shipped or business value created, but on number of lines of code generated which seems a fairly flaky justification for such a large AI spend personally.

baloki··on HSBC blocks its app due to F-Droid-installed Bitwarden
Some banks only provide access via apps (at least in the UK) so loosing access to the app also means you loose access to the bank account.
baloki··on NPM debug and chalk packages compromised
Happens to the best of people. Appreciate you’re fast and open response.
baloki··on NPM debug and chalk packages compromised
A package on the list called ‘simple-swizzle’ turns out to be used in OpenNext which is an unexpected attack vector for sure.
baloki··on Show HN: Nissan's Leaf app doesn't have a home screen widget so I made my own
They’re API used to work via just providing a VIN however that also allowed remote control so you could just run through all the VINs Nissan uses and turn on remote heating, etc.

This was reported in the media which caused Nissan to start locking down their API something fierce.

Then the three years free of many services have started to expire for most vehicles, so locking it down more became a potentially profitable exercise so now they actual have development work against it.

baloki··on The failure of self-checkout technology
They also run facial recognition on anyone who uses them though :/

This article mentions the south of England but they’ve rolled it out country-wide since:

baloki··on Volkswagen, Porsche, and Audi say they will use Tesla's EV charging plug
They generally pre-auth for either £20 or £40 and then update the amount post-transaction.

In terms of PIN check, the card is just declined with an appropriate error message because you can’t insert it and the next time you use a contactless machine it asks for the card to be inserted and a PIN entered.

For petrol (gas) pumps in the UK it generally auths either £1 or £99.

baloki··on Monsters of the Road: What Should the UK Do About SUVs?
In the UK you’re taxed more on vehicle excise duty if a car costs more than £45,000 as it’s a luxury.
baloki··on Scrollbars are becoming a problem
First thing I do on MacOS is turn on always show scrollbars tbh.
baloki··on UK Parliament undermined the privacy, security, freedom of all internet users
They block your site at the ISP level. They’ve been doing that for years.

They’d fine you as well but that’s probably less enforceable.

baloki··on UK Parliament undermined the privacy, security, freedom of all internet users
What I really don’t understand is why parents aren’t responsible for monitoring they’re children's access to the Internet anymore?

Why does it need to be done at each website instead of at the point of access?

baloki··on New Map APIs from Google
In the UK the government sort of does manage a map that’s used as the basis of a lot of others maps called Ordinance Survey Maps.
baloki··on A table that looks good on mobile and desktop
Isn’t this just 2 tables with one hidden at a time?
baloki··on FTC sues Amazon over ‘deceptive’ Prime sign-up and cancellation process
It’s as much as the sign up tbh where it automatically adds Prime to your basket and makes it hard to realise your signing up to a reoccurring payment.
baloki··on Google doesn’t want employees working remotely anymore
People feel they have to come in if they’re mildly sick for a variety of reasons.
baloki··on Dashcam footage shows driverless cars clogging San Francisco
Honestly I think by that point owning one won’t even be a thing. You’ll rent it from the manufacturer on demand or via a subscription with your subset of features enabled just for your trip.

They won’t park, they’ll just move from one job to the next (like taxis and ubers).

baloki··on [dead]
Interesting video on how increased automation doesn’t seem to be making employment better. Some of the takes are a bit extremely one sided, but it the general research poses some interesting points.
baloki··on Maybe treating housing as an investment was a mistake
I assume it’s more people who’ve bought a house, sell it to downsize once the kids have moved out and use the excess towards their retirement (to make up the difference between the low amount they’ve been able to scrape together over the years)
baloki··on Google Fuchsia OS team affected by layoffs
I think that’s the way at most companies unfortunately. Maintenance is a cost centre while a new product is a potential revenue stream (until it too becomes a cost centre).
baloki··on Google to reduce workforce by 12k
Wasn’t there a whole scene in Silicon Valley with Gavin Belson that basically mocks this kind of language?
baloki··on Tweetbot is (mostly) working again
To clarify, only the latest version as well.
baloki··on British Motorway Database
It’s a pity it’s not accurate as to do a full loop you have to leave on a slip road and use a roundabout to rejoin (Simister Island).
baloki··on Andersen EV Charger Company Goes into Administration
Wonder what happens with the fact it’s a smart charger so requires the cloud to operate?
baloki··on How criminals are using jammers, deauthers to disrupt WiFi security cameras
If your camera is down for an extended period that would probably be enough of an alert?
baloki··on Companies are paying huge sums to show their ads to bots
Layout shifts on ad sites are more usually related to the fact that ads come in various sizes and to make sure one is always displayed (and the company makes a tenth of a hundredth of a local denomination of currency) so you can’t prefix the ad space to take out of the page.

Then UX and your ad team will duke it out for if it should be a fixed size or should the company make more money and the user always loses :(

baloki··on First Look At The CSS object-view-box Property
Although cool, it kind of ignores the responsive design-ness of modern websites if I’ve understood the implementation correctly?

Everything seems based off knowing the exact size of the original and the new container, so if the proportions of the container change, so will the clipping?

Could probably fix with a lot of breakpoints and the like, but it feels like it would be better generating a cropped version of the image beforehand instead of using this.

baloki··on T-Mobile CDMA network shutting down soon
An interesting side effect of these networks shutting down seems to be a lot of car manufacturers have been cheeping out for years and relying on 2G and 3G networks on even quite modern cars, then blaming the network providers when they stop working after being the network is shut off instead of offering upgrades to the telecommunications modules to a more modern standard.
baloki··on Ask HN: Is the Great Resignation in tech real? If so, why?
Record profits and unwilling to provide decent payrises, using the excuse of the pandemic uncertainty.
baloki··on Online abuse: banning anonymous social media accounts is not the answer
Wasn’t there evidence that anonymity doesn’t actually play as big a part as people keep saying? Most of the Twitter abuse, you can generally identify who it is behind the account, it’s more the forum than the anonymity?
baloki··on Estonia has a new way to stop speeding motorists
Don’t you have to report that you’ve attended the course nowadays and Insurers generally increase the premium by the same amount as if you had points?
