bad_alloc··on United finds loose bolts on plug doors during 737 Max 9 inspections
How is Airbus doing meanwhile? I didn't hear about any production quality issues in their aircraft.
bad_alloc··on Bad scientific code beats code following "best practices" (2014)
Never had a paper rejected for lack of reproducibility though. And as long as I am working for the PhD and not the long term career, it's still better to focus on the short term. I don't like it, but I feel that's where I ended up :(
bad_alloc··on Live Map of Swiss Trains
Here's most of Europe, but mostly based on interpolated schedule data:

https://travic.app/?z=6&x=1652866.9&y=6336146.8&l=osm_standa...

It's also great to see the utter mess that DB organization is. I found their live tracking on [1], but it can only be ordered as a product to embed somewhere, they don't show it on their site. Then there is the random https://www.bahnhof.de/, which seems to collect information about train stations. But if you want to schedule your trip or buy a ticket, you'd better get the DB Navigator app, which is not available as a web version. FML.

bad_alloc··on Slow Electricity: The Return of DC Power? (2016)
I wish there was some standard way to add DC wiring in parallel to AC. Seems like people who want to do this have to roll their own systems for now.
bad_alloc··on Git Things
> if you're working on something collaboratively you need to express intent in your commit messages!

100%! And if somebody cannot communicate the intent, there is a high chance they don't understand fully what they just did.

bad_alloc··on Tesla Cybertruck Charging Curve Confirms Poor Charging Performance
689Wh/mi is 428Wh/km... that is utterly insane energy use. My Zoe (small car) needs 150Wh/km in winter and I wouldn't get a car above 200 or 250.
bad_alloc··on Detecting Unwanted Location Trackers
How would you detect and track somebody with a faraday bag?
bad_alloc··on European heat pump sales are collapsing
This is false. The Nordics use way more heat pumps than the rest of Europe:

bad_alloc··on Why Are So Many Americans Dying Early?
> With the worst of COVID behind us, annual deaths for all causes should be back to pre-pandemic levels — or even lower because of the loss of so many sick and infirm Americans.

Since we now know that Covid can lead to long-term suppression of the immune system and that a significant part of infected people have other lingering issues, this is obviously false.

bad_alloc··on The University of California has all but dropped carbon offsets
> nuclear is always on

When is peak energy demand during the day/month/year?

> nuclear can be built anywhere

Like Fukushima? How do you handle lack of cooling water during droughts (see France 2022)?

> doesn't kill animals

How many animals get killed by wind farms roughly?

> is safe and effective

What is the cost per MWh including building cost + waste disposal costs?

bad_alloc··on Who makes the most reliable new cars?
Oddly enough they don't state what the problems are. Meanwhile the ADAC (German car club) find that EVs have similar defect rates in components they share with ICE while having less engine issues. Overall, they conclude there is insufficient data for a meaningful statistic at this time:

https://www.adac.de/rund-ums-fahrzeug/unfall-schaden-panne/a...

bad_alloc··on Who makes the most reliable new cars?
Mini is BMW
bad_alloc··on Normal Operating Sounds
Renaults unofficial slogan is " tous les jours un bruit nouveau", which means "every day a new noise".

... which is not that wrong with the Zoe. Especially the E-brake has some bark to it.

bad_alloc··on YouTube is now blocking ad blockers so I make ads run faster
This instantly loses the main selling point: Massive audience. If they manage to get 20% of people to pay (which would be huge) they'd lose hundreds of millions of viewers still.
bad_alloc··on Starship will attempt a launch this Friday
> there is no military incentive for this

* Precision landing of large amount of troops, anywhere

* Ability to lift 250 tons -> precision landing of tanks and artillery, anywhere

* Deployment of kinetic impactors from space

bad_alloc··on Olive oil soars, and thieves go after century-old trees in the Mediterranean
> Surging olive oil prices, driven in part by two years of drought in Spain, has meant opportunity for criminals across the Mediterranean.

i.e. we are beginning to see the impacts of climate change on the food supply in Europe.

bad_alloc··on Ask HN: What's the most interesting (non-AI) advancement in tech in 2023?
From what I heard it is very exciting for tank crews, but not necessarily in a good way.
bad_alloc··on Ask HN: What's the most interesting (non-AI) advancement in tech in 2023?
Consumer-grade drones and RC ground vehicles becoming a major part of a war between regular armies.
bad_alloc··on How Wikipedia became the last good place on the internet
> I tell everyone to move to firefox, help them set it up and most are convinced.

That already helps significantly. :)

> I have nothing to say so don't host

A fair point, probably only a small % of people on the internet need to actualyl host something. There is some middle ground with federated hosting like write.as , so hosting is not always needed.

bad_alloc··on EU's concealment of secret 'expert list' on CSAM regulation is maladministration
Well, the Commission is elected by the elected governments of the member states. In a similar fashion, many heads of state are voted in by the elected government and not directly. Both procedures can be seen as iffy, but for the EU this was a deliberate compromise to get potential members on board.
bad_alloc··on How Wikipedia became the last good place on the internet
People complain a lot about the internet getting worse and worse. We can fix it, if we put in the effort to rebuild it.

* Join fediverse services, e.g. [Lemmy](feddit.de) or Mastodon and post a bit.

* Create your own website if you have sth like a cool hobby to share. Webhosting is available for free or cheap, depending on what you want. Link other pages you like to form a net.

* If you can, host your own instances and federate.

* Look into alternative search engines like marginalia to find "small-web" content

* Talk to your friends to also make the move or at least look at alternatives to the large sites.

We can't just wait for the problem to fix itself, this is something where internet users have to become active. It won't solve itself.

EDIT: Commenters here are rightly saying that discoverability is a problem. Again, relying on search engines is required for productivity, but when we consider browsing for research or leisure, don't underestimate manually curated link pages. Webrings were a thing we might wanna consider again.

bad_alloc··on Ask HN: To what extent have digital payments replaced cash in your country?
Agreed, a hybrid system is nice. What bothers me are bakeries getting upset at you when trying to pay <10€ and you dare to attempt to use a card.
bad_alloc··on Quadcopters can now visually track targets more effectively
> There is zero need to make these Black Mirror lethal

Nope, loot ak Ukraine. And military surplus can easily end up with the police.

bad_alloc··on Let me tell you about me Gear Fabrication Syndrome
Me too. This is somehow an interest many hobby machinists converge on as a far away goal. It is hard to do, needs extra equipment and is mostly avoidable. Still, the allure is there...
bad_alloc··on FreeTube – The Private YouTube Client
Is stealing physical goods the same as removing parts of a video stream?
bad_alloc··on FreeTube – The Private YouTube Client
> commit crimes

Is this really a crime? The tool does not redistribute copyrighted material for example. It only reshapes video sent to your device, allowing you to decide which parts to view.

bad_alloc··on Blocking Visual Studio Code embedded reverse shell before it's too late
It's about preventing mistakes and everybody makes those. If your company or institution is a target for spies, you want to avoid anything that makes it easy for an attacker.
bad_alloc··on Painting wind turbine blades black help birds avoid deadly collisions (2020)
The main killers of birds are: Cats, cars, glass windows, power lines and pesticides. The amount of birds killed by wind power is tiny in comparison. NIMBYs like to abuse this argument to avoid building wind farms while not caring for birds at all.
bad_alloc··on A test of memory for stimulus sequences in great apes
How about humans being unique in forming machine-building societieswith cultures containing some technology?
bad_alloc··on Half of Glaciers Vanish with 1.5 Degrees of Warming
Unfortunately people are already being displaced and/or dying from climate related causes. That does not fit into any soft messaging and requires drastic intervention.
