awoimbee··on We cut costs by 70% by moving from GCP and CockroachDB to Hetzner and PostgreSQL
For a single node cluster, just use minikube (or RKE2 if you have masochistic tendencies). And if everything runs on a single small vps, why even use postgres and not SQLite.
awoimbee··on Sudo-rs dependencies: when less is better
> In the end, we chose the potential dangers of reimplementing command line parsing over the potential issues of including clap

Have you considered using argh ? Seems like it has the upsides without the downsides.

awoimbee··on Virtual Machine as a core Android Primitive
Will this allow running linux VMs on any Android device ? Via something like nestbox: https://www.patreon.com/posts/74333551 ?
awoimbee··on S3 Express Is All You Need
If it's only a cache it should be on EBS, which is still way faster and 2x less expensive. I started a migration to s3 for such a project (container image caching) but then stopped when I realized what I was doing.
awoimbee··on Rocket v0.5: Stable, Async
*axum I migrated a rocket project to axum 1~2 years ago, due to rocket being dead at the time. Both frameworks contain all you need to build an API really. But personally I found that: Rocket is easier for beginners, and once you know what you're doing, Axum is cleaner and better integrated in the ecosystem.
awoimbee··on 10k Bounty for Rewriting Prettier in Rust
I'm not a lint fascist, but enforcing them gave our team: - less time reviewing: no more "you forgot to indent here" - less git conflicts: because of differences in trailing comas, line breaks, ... - less (to no more) code style debates: the linter is the benevolant dictator - less time making our code clean, thinking about line breaks: just get it done, the linter and CI will handle formatting !
awoimbee··on Ask HN: What's Your Opinion on Opentelemetry?
We use Tempo and python, implementation was super fast, it now permits optimizing our API endpoints. My conclusion: opentelemetry is great, go for it, find a lib to easily instrument your code
awoimbee··on Vale.sh – A Linter for Prose
Looks like grammarly but open source, with custom rules and easy to add to CI.

I currently use crate-ci/typos in my CI runs (it's great, humans often miss dumb typos), vale looks like typos but supercharged (but limited to markdown files?).

awoimbee··on Postgres Audit Tables Saved Us from Taking Down Production (2021)
Typescript does compile time checking only. Almost all TypeScript programs I've seen just decode JSON received and slap an `as SomethingType`. TypeScript is not strict, so it's easy to write but you can still get type errors.
awoimbee··on Rethinking Infrastructure as Code from Scratch
Looks to me like a vendor specific language with limited capabilities compared to others. Just use Pulumi TypeScript (self hosted). I'm not affiliated with Pulumi, it's just that unjustified vendor lock-in infuriates me.
awoimbee··on Rethinking Infrastructure as Code from Scratch
Just use pulumi (self-hosted in blob storage). Using a custom script is not the good choice when you could use the right tool for the job.
awoimbee··on Making a Linux home server sleep on idle and wake on demand – the simple way
Indeed, running docker on android requires a custom kernel: https://gist.github.com/FreddieOliveira/efe850df7ff3951cb62d...

The pixel 6 and 7 have full KVM capabilities tho: https://www.patreon.com/posts/74333551

awoimbee··on Immutable Linux distributions
It's what you get with opensuse MicroOS, you upgrade from snapshot to snapshot that are released regularly. I think silverblue works the same but opensuse is easier. I also use Tumbleweed on personal servers, never had issues.
awoimbee··on Sued by Meta, Freenom halts domain registrations
Note that freenom is known for blocking free domains until users pay up once there's a bit of traffic. I thought it was bullshit until it happened to me.
awoimbee··on Junkyard computing – repurposing discarded smartphones to minimize pollution
The same things you would do on a cluster of raspberry pi, the possibilities are endless!
awoimbee··on Show HN: Enc – A modern and friendly CLI alternative to GnuPG
How does it compare to https://sequoia-pgp.org/ ? Sequoia has a library and a (sane) CLI.
awoimbee··on Amazon S3 now automatically encrypts all new objects
What they won't tell you is that this will use the default KMS key, which cannot be shared across accounts. So your S3 bucket objects cannot be shared across AWS accounts by default, unless you setup a custom KMS key and "copy" everything in place (a standard AWS organisation is made of multiple accounts).
awoimbee··on Samsung bets on MicroLED and 8K for its premium 2023 TVs
I think a good reference is Apple's "retina" brand [1]. For a 27" monitor to be (basic) retina it must be 5K. But yes, there are diminishing returns and resolution isn't everything (I've tried terrible 4K monitors...).

[1]: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Retina_display

awoimbee··on The deception of “buying” digital movies
Then the TV show you love gets cancelled because everyone is pirating it. I guess it's the fault of the studios for pushing us towards piracy, but it's a shame.
awoimbee··on The quantum computing bubble
Early (00s) LCDs sucked, I can't even imagine how much a 70's LCD would suck compared to a CRT.
awoimbee··on USB4 v2 is also 120 Gbps
Would asymmetric PCIe tunneling be possible ? For external GPUs it would be perfect !
awoimbee··on Kubernetes reinvented virtual machines in a good sense
IMO it takes time to get up to speed but then it's pure bliss in terms of reliability. And don't go to yaml hell, use pulumi or equivalent.
awoimbee··on Ask HN: What is your Kubernetes nightmare?
If you plan on running bare-metal I highly recommend RKE2. It just works, it sets up most things for you (CNI included).

Don't even think about using kubeadm, it's the worst. It's overcomplicated and the smallest issue will wreck your cluster.

Also as a quick tip, don't use firewalld or iptables, use CNI resources (eg calico GlobalNetworkPolicy c; )

awoimbee··on Minikube now supports rootless podman driver for running Kubernetes
On servers, yes, rootless doesn't make much sense. But on on my dev laptop, "sudo docker" is tiring and adding docker to the sudoers group is a big security hole (why does everyone seem to think that "docker run" giving root privileges is ok ?!).
awoimbee··on Ask HN: How does HN manage to be always online?
To be fair you can run a microservices stack on a single server and it will be very fast, especially if you use gRPC instead of HTTP
awoimbee··on The problem with Bitcoin miners
- fossil fuels are used for Bitcoin mining - Bitcoin mining needs a stable source of energy to run 24/7, something you won't get from eg a single wind mill - building and maintaining renewable energy sources still has an environmental impact, the energy would be better used by something else than Bitcoin - making chips and PCBs is an environmental disaster, the fact we are making so much useless ASICs is horrible

Some industries are more polluting than others, but we should be doing everything in our power to reduce the pollution. Bitcoin (POW) is intentionally wasteful.

awoimbee··on Mysterious Memset
Couldn't the author pass a reference to a std::string instead of switching to an std::u8string, is that a C++ limitation ? And I really don't understand why the compiler doesn't assume strict aliasing in the first example.
awoimbee··on Android 13 virtualization lets Pixel 6 run Windows 11, Linux distributions
It would be best to create a kubernetes cluster of phones (reliability, scalability,...). To run containers on Android you currently need to build a custom kernel (1), I hope this feature removes this need.

awoimbee··on Nine Raspberry Pis powering an office (2016)
The easiest way is to use some kind of manager on top of wireguard. Tailscale is very good and free for a single user (or with headscale) Otherwise there is innernet, wiretrustee, ...
awoimbee··on More on Vaccine Side Effects
I could maybe agree if the restrictions were put in the winter, but not in the summer.

People have already booked their vacation, and now they need to do a PCR every 2 days to take a train, enjoy restaurants ? That's insane !

To get the "pass sanitaire" you need: first shot -> wait 3 weeks -> second shot -> wait 2 weeks. That's more than a month !
