avree··on Tuesday was my last day as CEO of CircleUp
Hopefully this reply doesn't get me in trouble on HN...

But I strongly disagree with you.

Collaborative Fund led the Series C round. Jay Kim was a fairly fresh venture investor at the time; the model and operation of NXC/Nexon's investment arm was quite different to the traditional VC. Based off the timings, it's highly likely this is the VC who the e-mail refers to.

avree··on Show HN: I built a Rotten Tomatoes-style platform for durable products
Am I doing something wrong? I clicked "Product Reviews" and it took me to https://www.buyforlifeproducts.com/blog where there is only one review, for socks.
avree··on Shapez.io: open-source base building game inspired by Factorio
This website broke my browser back button. :(
avree··on We need physical audio kill switches
He covers your argument in paragraph 5, under the "just ackchyually" crowd section.

To summarize, you shouldn't have to use peripheral equipment to achieve what he believes should be standard functionality in hardware that emits audio signals.

avree··on Noita – roguelite where every pixel is simulated
Hey, errantspark! Miss you man. :)
avree··on Getting Users Is Hard
Or maybe the other 30 commenters in this thread who've made similar apps have something to do with the fact that most users are not interested in this type of product.
avree··on Getting Users Is Hard
You are actively putting people's lives at risk. Saying that users are naturally irresponsible doesn't absolve you of responsibility.
avree··on Habitica – A gamified habit-building and productivity app
How come HabitRPG gets posted to HN every month? (Albeit under a new name for the past few years?)
avree··on Getting Users Is Hard
Both meetup.com and Facebook have news feeds that show me which events my contacts are attending... Maybe you should research your demo a bit more, and try to think about why Facebook or someone else in this space hasn't already built what you are trying to build (since it's not a particularly novel or new idea, honestly)
avree··on Snake in a QR Code
For which 99.99999% of users will be using mobile clients to scan the QR code that have no capability of executing the code...
avree··on Most-favorited Hacker News posts
I've used this website since 2010 and just realized it was a feature. Maybe I'm just unobservant...
avree··on Epic direct payment on mobile
Except that the apps help sell the phone. Just look at Apple's marketing since the App Store came out. Having an ecosystem of easily accessible free and paid apps is a huge driver in terms of the iPhone's popularity.

Your Walmart analogy would make more sense if Walmart sold tickets for admission. For example, Costco, a store that does in fact sell memberships, does buy and resell some products for no margin or even at a loss in order to cultivate a variety of goods to incentivize people to maintain a membership.

avree··on Ceasefire – Where cooler heads prevail. App launched today
Oh, maybe it's because their images are huge for no reason... Don't click on mobile!
avree··on Ceasefire – Where cooler heads prevail. App launched today
It's crazy to me that such a simple webpage has a 5 second load time and special loader animation...
avree··on What’s New in macOS Big Sur: Human Interface Guidelines
Which menus generally have color as an element in Mac OS today that don't in the new Mac OS? Serious question—I can't find one.
avree··on Twilio Super Sim – Public Beta
Yes, many. Verizon is still the only option for reception in many areas—I live in Los Altos Hills, and the only provider with reception for much of the town is Verizon.
avree··on Seattle to permanently close 20 miles of streets to traffic
Any particular reason why you chose Amazon as the company that should be paying for a public utility for some reason? What about Microsoft, Boeing, University of Washington... what's the criteria by which a company becomes responsible for public works in your mind?
avree··on Zoom Acquires Keybase
The guy you're replying to is the one who wrote the misleading blogpost that was (rightfully flagged) in link [2]. I think it's likely that if he's still grinding this axe 7 months after a very reasonable explanation was given by Keybase, he's not going to change his mind now.
avree··on Uber CTO resigns amidst 5400 employee layoff
It includes the number working on their Eats, Driver, autonomous driving, internal products, etc. It's the employees of Uber, the company, not Uber the ride share app.
avree··on Uber discusses plan to lay off about 20% of employees
There's no billion/million mixup here.

Quarterly revenue will be down by 17-22 million.

avree··on Instead of deleting account, NYT appends ‘1000’ to username and email address
Just to make this kind of confusing story less confusing—the Pinboard guy prints valid invoices (in order to be legally compliant, and because he's "not a totally evil guy"). Someone (from Germany) asked him to add Company Name to the invoice, and he replied by saying "just edit the HTML to add whatever you need".

https://twitter.com/i/status/1192182812121583617 The actual tweets probably explain it better than I (and the parent comment) can.

avree··on Over 500k Zoom accounts sold on hacker forums, the dark web
Huh? It's not like Zoom offers an SSO solution. The value of the accounts is two-fold:

1) Looking for Zoom premium accounts, there is actually a pretty good trade in stolen accounts on the dark web. Folks will pay a dollar for example for one of these accounts.

2) This is the more likely one—looking for people who use one shared password across multiple valuable logins.

avree··on The U.S.'s $13B aircraft carrier has a toilet problem
Fish and humans have vastly different diets, and human feces contain different bacteria and viruses than fish feces. You can absolutely pollute an ocean with sewage. Please try to educate yourself.
avree··on Robinhood knowingly left leapyear bug unpatched
There's no proof it was a leap year bug. If they were truly sending an out of range value, the response code would probably be a 500, not a 503.
avree··on Ask HN: What automation tools have you used to replace mundane activities?
Sorry, but there’s no bank in the world that would tell you to simply “take a hike” if your password was breached and your money was stolen.
avree··on Ring Doorbell App Packed with Third-Party Trackers
This sort of pedantic hand-wringing is tiring. Google sells many things, one of which is advertising. Firebase Crashlytics may be free, but it's made available by Google in the hopes that developers pay for Firebase's full suite of paid offerings—it's not to populate additional user data to their ad or search algorithms.
avree··on DigitalOcean is laying off staff
It's funny—my experience is pretty much opposite. At a certain scale AWS will provide really world-class support beyond just troubleshooting. DO forwards you to (granted, fairly in-depth) documentation an expects you to read it and engineer your own solutions.
avree··on Things end users care about but programmers don't
I mean, any API call to an external server can be considered "phoning home". What is your specific definition? I think submitting bug reports only through official channels is pretty lame. Most of the 'official channels' don't really provide much meaningful info to developers, there's limited support for custom debug/logging/etc. So your point 1 and point 2 are basically at odds.
avree··on Craigslist releases new mobile app for iOS and Android
The Hippie Van for $420 is a nice touch too.
avree··on I tried to adjust the time on my alarm clock
Bose QC35 headphones should be 100% functional over BLE without needing an app (I pair them with my iPhone as a normal BLE headset, and they pair with my Mac and Windows Desktop as well, no app installed).

Also, they include a physical audio cable which works all the time... I'm curious what could have caused your headset to not function normally, as I deal with many, many, many QC35s (my company gives one to each hired employee) and have never heard of (or experienced myself!) the app being a pre-req.
