avolcano··on Software on Steam
The most incredible thing about this is that these applications can have achievements, DLC, and even Steam Workshop support.

Check out Game Maker: http://store.steampowered.com/app/214850/

- Different components sold as DLC (http://store.steampowered.com/dlc/214850/)

- Achievements (http://steamcommunity.com/stats/214850/achievements) for things like "run a game on iOS" and "1000 debugs"

- Created games can be put on the Steam Workshop (http://steamcommunity.com/workshop/browse?appid=214850), which is INCREDIBLE when you think about it!

Spent a bit of time working on a d3js version. It's super ugly because I just hacked it together while learning how d3js works; I'm sure someone will come along and do it much better ;)

avolcano··on Tell HN: Startup school 2012 invites are out
Same reason I didn't even apply.

It'd be an amazing experience to be surrounded by hackers (there aren't many here an hour outside Atlanta), and it's something I'd love to be able to put on my resume, but there's no way I can afford it while unemployed and going to college.

avolcano··on Show HN: Kill The Landline
Interesting. I'm trying to get my parents to drop their Charter landline - which, yes, is $40/mo, and yes, they both have cell phones - but they haven't wanted to because it'd be difficult to get everyone to change the numbers.

I think the biggest aspect of this is the "redirect to two numbers" - my parents would love that, since they would both be able to get the messages.

How does it handle voicemail, though? It can't send the voicemails to both phones, presumedly.

And btw, I'm surprised by the negativity in the comments here. This is a product targeting a segment of consumers who are not as technologically adept and probably feel "trapped" with their landline - an instant out as convenient and cheap as this is much more attractive than porting their landline number to a new mobile line or trying to figure out how to get a landline to Google Voice, which is a complicated and costly process (going by http://www.zdnet.com/blog/government/google-voice-a-step-by-...)

avolcano··on Ubuntu Will Now Have Amazon Ads Pre-Installed
Honestly, if Ubuntu dropped their ridiculous, underdeveloped, undersupported Ubuntu One services and partnered with Amazon to integrate theirs (Cloud Player/Cloud Drive/etc), that would be a MAJOR improvement for both them and the end-user. Excellent cross-platform cloud services and marketplaces integrated with the OS would be great for bringing less-technical users to the platform in the wake of the proposed "Windows 8 exodus" (if it actually happens).

Instead, they're using... basically affiliate links. Instead of a real monetization strategy involving a real partnership, they're using the "blogger who just realized he could make money off of this thing" strategy.

avolcano··on Debt Collectors Cashing In on Student Loan Roundup
God, this is depressing.

Young people putting themselves into crippling debt because college has been sold as the only way to get good, "real" employment in this country. And you know what? It's probably true in most of industries and for the vast majority of people. We've been taught that without college, you'll be stuck in a fast food job forever. Everyone has to go - high schools have replaced all of their "technical" classes with "college prep" classes; everything rides on that SAT score, kids having complete breakdowns over not getting the scholarship they wanted...

All for colleges that gobble up money for degrees that seem to never correspond to actual intelligence or skill in a field like they're intended to.

Ugh.

avolcano··on The Royal Nokia Screw-Up That Shouldn’t Have Been
The innovation was bringing a screen with that high of a DPI to millions of users without an incredibly high cost, and pushing their competitors to follow suit.

"Innovate" and "invent" are not synonyms.

avolcano··on Cloning the MakerBot Is Legal, But Does That Make It Right?
"No real gain?"

Of course there's real gain! Imagine small colleges, hacker spaces, and even more individuals being able to afford these things. That's a MASSIVE gain. Increasing access to this kind of product is almost, if not more, important than improving the actual product.

Imagine a world in which there had never been a computing race to the bottom. Maybe every computer would be a supercomputer, sure, but then none of us would be able to afford our own computer in our own homes!

avolcano··on A Faster Facebook for iOS
I've found the Facebook app on my GNex is faster than it was on my iPhone 4, but that might be chalked up to phone speed differences rather than the Android app actually being better.
avolcano··on Task tracking for nerds
I tried really hard to do something like this for note-taking (outlining) with VIM-style keybindings, but it never made it off the ground. Kudos to you for finishing (or, depending on your perspective, maybe just starting) this :)

In fact, my recommendation is to take this interface and apply it to notes. There aren't any good modal outline/note-taking editors out there, as far as I'm aware.

While I do like the interface, I think it might be better off as a primarily JavaScript app that syncs to the server, instead of having separate server-rendered pages for the notes. Would feel much snappier (even on a server that isn't being hammered by HN traffic ;])

avolcano··on PCSX2 1.0 released
I'll give that a shot. I think I tried an option like that, but it just made things super-choppy (and still somewhat slomo). My system's somewhat underpowered anyways, so I'm not too surprised or upset by the issues emulating.
avolcano··on PCSX2 1.0 released
Thanks for the link! Especially loved this quote, explaining why a performance-intensive emulator that strived for accuracy is more important than a speed-oriented one:

"Video games are a piece of our history, and we need to respect the fact that there is a "true" form they had when released. Imagine if we only had a JPEG of the Mona Lisa, a RealVideo stream of the moon landing, or a MIDI rendition of "Walking in the Air." We have the ability to keep our past alive, and I feel like it's almost a duty to do so."

avolcano··on PCSX2 1.0 released
What always annoys me in emulation is how it always reacts so bad to slowdown. Was trying to get my Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 3 on, but apparently my poor Core 2 Duo E6600 and GTX 275 couldn't handle it. I was getting 30fps - which would be fine in a regular game, but in an emulator actually means playing the game at half speed (full speed being 60fps). Including the music, which, well, that was interesting.

Still, I'm glad to see progress being made in emulation. I think it's extremely important that we will have access to gaming history for a long time to come, even after most of the hardware has died or simply can't be hooked up to modern TV systems.

Seems like the next big step will be Xbox 1 emulation, which no one has tackled yet. Anyone know why?

Ah, "net send" for a new era!
avolcano··on How to watch the Olympics, live, from the United States
Kinda seems more like "how to watch the Olympics for $20" (or more - I don't know quite how many games are available, and at what quality, from the BBC, but I feel like you could potentially use over 200 gigs of transfer in watching them).

Many actual VPNs are somewhat cheaper, and just as simple to set up.

Of course, paying money to a third-party to watch BBC feels as insane and dumb as ever. You'd think that they'd start looking into overseas subscriptions at this point. Nevermind the IOC - why can't they offer anything on Pay-Per-View? Both are great alternative sources of income they're passing up, instead essentially encouraging piracy and sending money to third parties instead!

avolcano··on I'm an American and I want to watch the Olympics. What do I do?
To be fair, not everyone is in a good area for OTA TV.

You can check here: http://www.antennaweb.org/Address.aspx to see if you can pick up an NBC affiliate (or Telemundo, if you're okay with Spanish commentary) near you.

avolcano··on I'm an American and I want to watch the Olympics. What do I do?
Unfortunately, this tip doesn't seem to be working for the Olympics replays on the BBC's site (they all have a "try again later" every time I try to watch one).

Thanks for the tip, though, and kudos to Unblock-Us for being one of a VERY few sites that let you trial their service without giving them payment details.

avolcano··on Apple Is Said to Discuss an Investment in Twitter
Ugh, I'm really opposed, as an OSX and iOS user, to Apple having this direct of a tie to any social networking company. It would be awful if they avoided adding more sharing options and OS integration for 3rd-party applications like Facebook because they could be a competitor to Twitter or any other investment. I'd rather they stay as relatively neutral as they can.
avolcano··on Apple To Release Mountain Lion On July 25
Yes, because we all know that money is the only obstacle to creating a product. You definitely don't need a lot of uber-talented employees focused in certain areas or anything.
avolcano··on Craigslist Suing Padmapper
From a Wired article, circa 2009 (so this may be out of date):

"Craigslist is not only gigantic in scale and totally resistant to business cooperation, it is also mostly free. The only things that cost money to post on the site are job ads in some cities ($25 to $75), apartment listings by brokers in New York ($10), and—in a special case born of recent legal trouble—advertisements in categories commonly used by prostitutes, because authorities encourage vendors to maintain a record that would aid investigators. There is no banner advertising. They won't let you join them, and at this price you can't beat them either."

http://www.wired.com/entertainment/theweb/magazine/17-09/ff_...

Usually, when companies get mad about scraping, it's because it's either bypassing the ads that make them money, or in rare cases bypassing a premium API. Here, PadMapper is doing neither.

In fact, if Craiglist is so committed to not updating their ugly website, why don't they just license out a public API, killing two birds (new monetization strategy and having a better interface for free) with one stone?

avolcano··on Concise list of upcoming Coursera courses by month
Just signed up for Algorithms, Part I. I probably won't be able to take that at my college for several more semesters, and this is information I'd actually like to know, but something that I've struggled to learn in isolation. Very exciting :)
avolcano··on Python.org Redesign Proposals due in 7 days
It's interesting that they're getting a redesign - I've always thought Python.org was one of the nicest, cleanest sites for an open source project.

Here's their reasoning for a redesign: http://pythonorg-redesign.readthedocs.org/en/latest/#current...

avolcano··on Turbulenz HTML5 gaming platform and engine released free of charge to developers
This is not a free engine for HTML5 games. You are required to sign up to release a game on their proprietary * distribution platform* and give them 30% of your net revenue. Very misleading headline.

From the page:

"We supply your team with the Turbulenz HTML5 JS engine and all the Turbulenz APIs, free of charge. You bring a great game that embraces the way the web works; dynamic, social, and connected. We provide engine technical support, payment processing, analytics, game marketing services, and in some cases we may fund or co-fund the development of your game.

"The end result is a direct revenue stream, full control over the marketing of your game, and your game reaching millions of game players on many different devices and web destinations. Developers retain 70% of all net revenues."

Oh, and their platform seems immediately awful too, considering that you need to sign in to even SEE a single game they're offering.

A shame, too. Was hoping for a nice, free alternative to the Impact Engine (http://impactjs.com/).

avolcano··on Chocolat 1.0 Released
There's some themes for ST2 that make it much more palatable on OSX, if you're concerned about aesthetics. My favorite is Soda:

https://github.com/buymeasoda/soda-theme/

avolcano··on Chocolat 1.0 Released
Not to pick on you in particular, but I think it's a bit disingenuous to try to say "something is priced to be worth about X amount of time" - it entirely depends on the person and their financial situation.

I've used Sublime Text 2 for a year without actually buying it, but I've also been unemployed college student for the same amount of time, so I can't justify dropping $60 on something optional when I could be stocking up on ramen or paying rent.

avolcano··on Humble Indie Bundle 5: pay what you want for video games
Even if you own most of the games in this bundle, the soundtracks for Bastion and Sword & Sworcery are worth it alone.
avolcano··on The new Git-scm.com
Git isn't "pre-installed" on OSX; it comes with XCode. You can be a developer on OSX and not use XCode. It's not common, but it doesn't hurt to offer a download. And, of course, it's not like XCode gets updated every time Git does.
