austinkhale··on Tesla finds loophole to New Mexico’s ban by launching on tribal land
Yes, let’s compare the number of BMW dealerships in the Bay Area instead of comparing the number of dealerships Tesla has in comparably sized states where they have no restrictions. Also, we’ll cherry pick blue states from a list of partial ban states when the OP linked to a list of states with total bans.

It’s the OTHER people who are being disingenuous, surely.

Not sure why this is the hill to die on since my understanding is that we agree that bans— both partial & total are anti consumer. The one comment implying Republican states are being hypocritical with their party platform extolling the benefits of a free market vs the reality of the legislation passed seems reasonable given the numbers.

austinkhale··on Tesla finds loophole to New Mexico’s ban by launching on tribal land
Only two of the states you mention have a total ban: Wisconsin & Connecticut. The others you pulled from the list of states that have partial bans ie a limited number of stores are allowed. Out of the states with total bans: New Mexico, Alabama, South Carolina, Louisiana, Texas, Connecticut, West Virginia, Wisconsin, Nebraska, and Oklahoma, 7 are traditionally considered “deep” red states, 1 is considered purple, and 2 blue.

I’ve been to two dealerships in Ohio. I disagree with even a partial ban but limiting the number of stores vs a complete ban are two different things.

austinkhale··on Stripe Atlas: the first five years and 20k startups
While availability of capital is (in my experience) critical in the decision for South American startups to create a Delaware C Corp, another overlooked piece is the amount of bureaucratic hoops you’re forced to jump through elsewhere. Founders (again, my anecdotal experience) want to focus on building their business. The US system is far from perfect but it’s the most streamlined & has a clear path laid out for scaling. The US system is onerous at best but it’s one of the best relative to others.

Ultimately, if you make things harder for entrepreneurs, they will find an alternative. Atlas makes things easy & actively looks for more way to remove obstacles. It’s a no-brainer for people wanting to focus on building and not tax entity structure.

austinkhale··on Stripe Atlas: the first five years and 20k startups
We really _wanted_ to use Stripe Atlas for our startup but ended up using Clerky for various reasons. Neither will get you all the way to the goal line, but both give you a damn good start. You’ll end up finalizing some things with your accountant / legal counsel.

That being said, Atlas is getting closer and closer to closing all the gaps. Excited to see what they’re able to accomplish in the next 1 - 2 years. The onerous process (easier in the US than others, but still not easy) inhibits innovation and the easier things become the more folks can focus purely on creating value in the economy.

A really big win in the space recently was the temporary approval for electronic submission of 83(b) paperwork. The more things like that occur (and become permanent) the better off we’ll all be.

austinkhale··on What's in email tracking links and pixels?
Per my most recent Substack email, they have 55k+ publications, 37M+ posts, and 19M+ users. Interesting.
austinkhale··on The SaaS CTO Security Checklist Redux
You actually can register with them and they promise to provide registration at cost forever: https://www.cloudflare.com/products/registrar/

Note: They released the beta fairly recently, which is why a lot of folks don’t know about it yet.

austinkhale··on OSE Apprenticeship
I am very confused by the title and the subsequent page here. Goodbye Y Combinator? How does a $12k tuition, 6 month sleeping-in-sleeping-bag program have anything at all to do with a wildly successful incubator? These are not the same markets.

austinkhale··on Humans Could Live up to 150 Years, New Research Suggests
We are one large asteroid hitting earth or nuclear war from an extinction event. Being multi planetary is a hedge for the continuation of the species.
austinkhale··on Monetizing open-source is problematic
No, it is not. That being said, I certainly would move to another service if they don’t make it right. However, I also run a business and don’t make knee-jerk reactions to cancel support services on a Saturday evening without giving any sort of time for the provider to respond.

Always amazes me how intent people are at trying to frame comments in the least charitable way possible. We all support this person getting paid for their work. End of story.

austinkhale··on Monetizing open-source is problematic
As a Retool customer, this feels gross. I hope they reach out and find a way to make this right.
austinkhale··on EU says Apple’s App Store breaks competition rules after Spotify complaint
This is a strange take considering Facebook is distributed for free in the App Store with the current model. Apps paying the 30% tax _already_ subsidize Facebook’s distribution.
austinkhale··on Open letter from researchers involved in the “hypocrite commit” debacle
This is the most reasonable response in this chain. The number of unintended consequences this "research" could have caused is not quantifiable. This entire episode is shocking, disgusting, and should not be forgiven easily. Actions speak louder than words; this is especially true of apologies. Their words are empty and their actions are nonexistent.
austinkhale··on Cloudflare Pages is now Generally Available
Is it possible to proxy traffic through Cloudflare so that at least the client —> proxy portion of the traffic is done over HTTP/3?
austinkhale··on Wix and Their Dirty Tricks
I will add here that my biggest disagreement is treating a website hosting platform as some sort of proprietary content. I understand if they don't provide an export of their theme. I understand if they don't want to provide an export in some nice-to-use format. IANAL, but not allowing any sort of export at all should be illegal. At a minimum, someone should be able to email Wix support and get a CSV of the data _they created_ on the platform.

The owner of the website is the copyright holder of the user generated content. The fact that they would have to go and copy/paste their own work, download their own images, etc. in order to move to a different provider absolutely cements my position to actively warn people in my sphere of influence to avoid Wix like a plague. The gall of a company to exploit the OSS parts of the web and to only take & take without ever giving is gross.

At least once or twice a day I’ll find a comment on HN that just 100% completely humbles me. This is that comment. Where do you learn things like this?
austinkhale··on New Model M Is an American-Made Keyboard That Puts a Spring Back in Your Typing
Switching to an Ergodox with a Dvorak layout changed my life. I used to have crazy pain after 6 - 8 hours of typing. Now I can easily go 12 - 14 with no issues whatsoever.

Obviously that is not healthy or sustainable in the long term for other reasons but it’s a huge weight off my shoulders not thinking I’m ruining my wrists trying to meet a launch date.

austinkhale··on Founder PSA: Stripe Atlas Locks Your Account Until Your Application Is Submitted
Update: Edwin is a badass and helped get us live. Further evidence that Stripe is the best choice when it comes to your payment stack. Huge thank you to everyone working at Stripe. Super appreciate ya’ll.
austinkhale··on Founder PSA: Stripe Atlas Locks Your Account Until Your Application Is Submitted
Yeah, it's actually the first time I've encountered it with Stripe. 99% of the time, they are my favorite support team to work with. This seems to be one of those weird edge cases that we unfortunately got caught in -- I'm in contact with some folks on their product team now so fingers crossed we're able to get it solved.
austinkhale··on Fueling Reddit’s Future
I am not a fan of the changes being made and I’ve been using Reddit less and less for casual browsing as a result. However, I do the opposite when I’m looking for an answer to something specific. I find myself using “site:reddit.com” all the time when doing Google searches since the resulting discussions often have way more context, alternate suggestions, etc. than almost any other site I’ve found.
austinkhale··on HomePod Mini
Really?? I love mine. I use it every day for Hue bulb activations, playing music, timers, etc. and it does the job perfectly.

It doesn’t answer all the same answers as the Google Assistant but I feel like that’s worth the privacy trade off.

austinkhale··on HomePod Mini
They don’t tie your request to your Apple ID and you can opt out of any recording being stored. Presumably this would make it impossible for a government body to subpoena your recordings, which as we’ve seen with Alexa is entirely possible.
austinkhale··on They're deleting my channel, but they don't know why? [video]
I was involved a bidding war between GCP and AWS where each was offering a healthy six figures in free credits to move our business to their cloud. GCP was offering nearly 3x as many but ultimately I didn’t want to move to a service where there was a chance offerings were going to get the axe with no warning. Their reputation has indeed hurt them — at least in one instance.

austinkhale··on 'Super Recognizers' Like Me

austinkhale··on Optimizely to be acquired by Episerver
As someone who recently oversaw the transition from Zuora + Authorize.net to Stripe for a business in the eight figure a year range, can confirm.

Stripe worked with us on pricing discounts (over $150k per year in savings by switching from our previous set up) & the enterprise support is absolutely top notch. I literally could not be happier with the service.

austinkhale··on Portland approves 10% cap on fees that food delivery apps can charge restaurants
That happened to me as well here in AZ. There is a popular local cookie place that we wanted to support. Ordered a dozen cookies from their website thinking it would put more money in their pocket vs ordering from DoorDash. However, the entire delivery process was DoorDash done all via SMS. It was odd.
austinkhale··on AWS Snowcone
We used them in a B2B setting when signing an enterprise data contract for nationwide real estate MLS data, including photos. The photo's needed to be uploaded to our S3 bucket and the only method available to download was via FTP. It made more sense to ask the third party provider to download the images to these disks, send them to us, and then we shipped them to AWS.
