audiometry··on Logitech MX Mechanical Keyboard
> Why is the mechanical keyboard community so elitist?

I think this is a fundamental element of modern 'advertising on social media'. This and 'scarcity' of product 'drops'.

My teenage son was sucked into this nonsense about two+ years ago. The PCBs for the keyboards (purchased from multiple vendors) are terribly-supported Chinese garbage. Official tech support is junk, and if you ask a keyboard community, it's taken as an insult to the community.

And before anyone says, "bad assembly" -- my son is certified from a three-day long Haako micro-soldering course, so he knows how to solder.

audiometry··on Bankers Are Driving the Wheat Price Explosion, Not the War in Ukraine
The article seemed more like a rant to me. “Choice is between food socialism or food barbarism.” Not even clear what that means. Headline, if it was supposed to be the thesis, wasn’t really explained/supported in the body. Wish I hadn’t bothered to read.
audiometry··on I fixed my broken monitor with a hair dryer
What is a “terminology tombola”. All I can find is tombola is some kind of lottery.
audiometry··on Show HN: I am building a free version of Strava
Kind of a dopey question… will this work if I keep my phone in my camelback while riding? I don’t want to attach it to my handlebars.

Yeah watched some videos and clearly the answer would be no. What’s the model of top-tube phone mount you used?

audiometry··on Apple Reports Second Quarter Results
My student son put me onto Notability yesterday (I got a new ipad pro). It's pretty cool. He swears by it for all his math and economics lectures.

audiometry··on I can't let go of “The Dunning-Kruger Effect is Autocorrelation”
"Most people who don’t know piano or figure skating are well aware that they don’t know, and do not rate themselves highly at all. "

I think this case (real_skill = 0, perceived_skill = 0) is maybe a trivial case, and that the bit of truth DK-idea catches is when someone with very little skill considers how much work it would be to get to whatever a 'fully skilled' version would be, they woefully underestimate.

Picture someone in their first summer of mountain biking watching youtube videos of the best guys. Yes, you know you can't jump like they do, or turn as skillfully, but you're getting better each month. However, you still grossly underestimate how hard it is to get to that skill level.

At least it's my personal experience as a thoroughly unskilled!

audiometry··on A story about planning for Desert Storm
Imagine if it were true. Then maybe no Forever Wars in Iraq, Afghanistan, etc.

Or something else horrid and gross would have developed.

audiometry··on Ask HN: What hyper-focused industry newsletters do you enjoy?
I was going to post this too. He's exceptionally skillful in explaining, lucidly, the small wonkish details of financial market matters that make the gem of the story. I'm also impressed by the breadth of markets that he's able to cover with that clarity.
audiometry··on Ask HN: I'm interested in so many disciplines, but what can I do with that?
I’m interested in these as both a consumer and a contributor. However I haven’t found many interesting markets. Often are just markets on elections. Additionally many seem to have very small max bet size.

What markets have more interesting breadth of coverage + have decent betting limits? I had the impression cftc or sec limit this to avoid become a regulated security.

audiometry··on $625M worth of ETH drained on Axie Infinity's Ronin Network
Crypto is far worse. You need to normalize the amount-looted by the amount of transactions conducted.

Very clearly 'traditional' finance is far safer. There's a reason financial institutions are annoying and stodgy -- they have centuries of hard-lessons-learned. Crypto 'disruption' is mostly throwing away that painful experience.

audiometry··on Lawmakers Drink Raw Milk to Celebrate Legality, Become Immediately Sick (2016)
That’s definitely true for me at least for chili peppers. In fact I think my reaction has worsened over time even after decreasing exposure to them. Such a pity—makes food taste so good.
audiometry··on Folding bicycle small enough to fit in hand luggage
No. There are lots of Chinese and Korean knock off Bromptons available.

Our shop has noted that Brompton bottom brackets are low quality. Often poorly aligned to the frame and the threading frequently needs chased.

audiometry··on Some tiny personal programs I've written
That's an arbitrage, then, if both sides are immediately available. Then it's just a question of how much profit can you lock-in.

audiometry··on Ask HN: What concepts have you never truly understood?
Yeah, I understand that the photon hitting my eye right now was ejected from the sun 8 minutes ago. And if I could see it, a photon hitting my eye now from the big-bang was ejected 13bn years ago.

But if I have some super telescope here on earth, and I'm looking through it now, the photon that hits the eyepiece of the telescope also was ejected 13bn years ago.

I don't see how magnification allows me to see even older photons.

audiometry··on Ask HN: What concepts have you never truly understood?
How astronomers “see into the past” by looking at dim stars, and how bigger telescopes see farther back in history?
audiometry··on U.S. Treasury Announces Unprecedented and Expansive Sanctions Against Russia
USA imported slightly more oil from Russia than it did Saudi Arabia in 2020 as an example.

USA can roughly export 3000kbd oil. It already exports 2.5-3.0mn daily during any given month. It does not have massively more export capacity than that.

USA SPR is large (600mn) but has very limited ability to get that oil into even the domestic market. The internal infrastructure is already occupied by moving the oil now that was released during the late 2021 SPR release. There is only perhaps 150kbd incremental oil it can put on to the market.

audiometry··on The U.S. is now energy independent
It seems to be a lame argument saying somehow high energy prices no longer affect US consumers.

Nonsense. And it grossly simplifies trade flows of refined products and crude flow in and out of the USA.

audiometry··on Pilots raise alarm at Qatar Airways for doctored hours, hidden fatigue
Their CEO is a tyrant, so this is no surprise.
audiometry··on Ask HN: Did I make a mistake jumping on the homestead bandwagon?
Yea, his channel is great. Another one is My Self Reliance ( https://www.youtube.com/c/ShawnJamesMySelfReliance ), located in Canadian forest. The amount of labour required to build cabins, food supplies, etc. is nearly endless. No wonder man evolved to living in tribes and eventually cities -- doing it all by yourself is just absurdly hard.

I'm not saying any of this is bad, but if you have romantic notions about living like this and having lots of free time to pursue frivolous things, you're probably going to be disappointed. Perhaps there is a better point somewhere along the spectrum of Manhattan to solo cabin life in the mountains.

I was terrified of this movie when I was a little kid. Circa 10 years old. Just seeing the trailer (on NBC?) scared me. Never watched it, even to this day. There was one other movie of this ilk. I remember in the trailer for one or the other, there being a scene with a woman protester, shouting with a British accent, "You cannot win a nuclear war!"
audiometry··on I got pwned by my cloud costs

audiometry··on NASA: Tonga blast was 10 megatons, more powerful than a nuclear bomb
Wouldn't pressure waves travelling in opposite directions interfere with each other?
audiometry··on Ask HN: What book should I buy for my 18th birthday?
I would have benefitted from reading “Ego is the Enemy” and any title on mindfulness from Jon Kabat Zinn. But at that age I was probably too hot headed and insane and immature to actually read them. Sigh. So instead I learned everything the hard way.
audiometry··on Ask HN: How to continue to be gracious about the good fortune of rich friends?
1. Comparison is the thief of happiness

2. If being around a person makes you unhappy (for whatever reason), cease being around that person.

I learned these lessons the hard way. They are excellent heuristics.

audiometry··on Toddlers are harsh judges of moral character
