atarian··on San Francisco Airbnb bookings plunge as city battles bad press
>People claim that SF is a boom and bust town as if it’s some force of nature. It isn’t. Claiming that there will be another boom is wishful thinking.

Couldn't have said this better myself. Tired of people saying there's gonna be another boom as if it's a sure thing.

atarian··on GPT-4 API General Availability
I really like the Swiss-style web design, it's well executed with the scrolling
atarian··on Peak LLM?
Guess you’ll want to sanitize the input by running GPT on the input itself before feeding it to the actual prompt.

Sounds like Copilot for CLI: https://githubnext.com/projects/copilot-cli/
atarian··on Bob Lee, former CTO of Square, has died after being stabbed in San Francisco
No, it does not fit that neighborhood at all. Plus, this wasn't some stray bullet from a shooting, this person was stabbed multiple times to death.
atarian··on Google and Mozilla are working on iOS browsers that aren't based on WebKit
There is no way Apple is going to allow for this.
atarian··on S.F. apartment rents fell again
It's almost like you deliberately misinterpreted what I said so you could make some vague point about Seattle which has nothing to do with SF.
atarian··on S.F. apartment rents fell again
Unfortunately, SF hasn't fully recovered from the pandemic and the Chesa Boudin era. Apart from empty office buildings due to WFH, a lot of major retail stores have also exited downtown (CVS, Walgreens, Uniqlo, etc). It's going to be a long time before SF goes back to the way things were before.
atarian··on Ask HN: Why haven't bookmarks been re-invented?
I've started using the Arc browser as my daily browser and really like how it treats bookmarks as tabs. Basically, bookmarks and tabs are on the same visual level but separated by a divider.
atarian··on AP fired reporter after dangerous blunder – Slack chats reveal chaotic process
It always scares me how easy it is to make assumptions that end up totally backfiring like this.
atarian··on Show HN: Illa – An open-source alternative to Retool

atarian··on Twitter Now Asks Some Fired Workers to Please Come Back

atarian··on Available Today: Windows Dev Kit 2023 a.k.a. Project Volterra
I have a feeling that Microsoft is eventually going to follow Apple’s playbook and completely exit the desktop OS business to focus on their own line of products.
atarian··on Figma Alternatives
Adobe has a history of using dark patterns to keep people subscribed to their products such as hidden fees for cancelling.
atarian··on I tricked myself into working out 3 times per week
how little body fat do you need to be at to have a 6 pack?
atarian··on Let’s Not Have a Beer
This rant comes off like he has a chip on his shoulder. He just took several different situations that offered alcohol and tried to make it seem like it's some kind of discrimination. Like with the beer dispenser.. he could have sold it or gift it to a coworker.
atarian··on Ask HN: How to find a small town to relocate for remote work?
Bend, Oregon
atarian··on Pesticide made us sterile, banana workers say
Would this also affect the people consuming the bananas since they are touching it and maybe ingesting chemicals?
atarian··on HUDS and GUIs: an inspiration resource site featuring Future User Interfaces
There is actually a functional purpose to futuristic UIs in film which is to help drive the story. For example, in Star Trek if a ship is damaged the UI will go red and start flashing to help convey to the audience that something really bad happened. One of the newer Star Wars movie did something similar to show an entire fleet of ships being wiped out.
atarian··on Zas Editor
Yes, desktop with 30" monitor.
atarian··on Zas Editor
Looks great. One thing I recommend is defining a smaller width for the content on the landing page so it doesn't take up the whole screen. Otherwise, it takes a lot of effort to read left-to-right.
atarian··on Dall-E 2
That's just going to make them more valuable.
atarian··on A few things to know before stealing my 914
The ending was great. Impressive that a thief actually got that far.
atarian··on Island is among the fastest companies to reach unicorn status
Copy-and-paste is disabled? Let me just take a screenshot.
atarian··on Anatomy of a terminal emulator (2021)
Interesting I didn't know that terminal sessions were files. So if I was root on a shared host, I could theoretically hijack and listen to what other people are doing in their SSH sessions.
atarian··on Pure Bash Bible – A collection of pure bash alternatives to external processes
Yeah it gets bashed a lot.
atarian··on Temporal raises $103M in Series B funding
Was this company launched by Uber or is it just based on Uber's open-source work?

EDIT: According to https://blog.amplifypartners.com/our-investment-in-temporal/, Temporal was founded by 2 engineers at Uber who created an open-source orchestration engine called Cadence and then later decided to found Temporal.

atarian··on Ask HN: How to prepare as soon-to-be blind developer?
Braille hardware seems pretty expensive for what you get. Last time I looked most of the devices costed $800+ USD for a single row of 24 letters.
