astannard··on 3D Ken Burns Effect from a Single Image
Absolutely love it, fantastic work!
astannard··on iPhone 11 Pro and iPhone 11 Pro Max
Gone is the excitement where I would stalk the rumor sites and live stream the announcement. All I hear is better camera, faster chip ZZZZZzzzzzz
astannard··on Scientists Discover New Evidence of the Asteroid That Killed Off the Dinosaurs
Well plenty of similar animals that were around at the same time such as Crocodiles have not. Unless crocs reside in our sewers watching, waiting and plotting our downfall
astannard··on Waymo gets green light in California to pick up passengers in self-driving cars
As long as a scapegoat, erm I mean "human saftey driver" is present
astannard··on Renault's driver UX is a disaster waiting to happen
My last few cars, were a confusing mess of UI. Both of which had poorly thought out touch screens. This Renault seems to have them both beet in bad ui though. I miss my mini with no touch screen and simple functional buttons!
astannard··on Y Combinator invests in Monzo through its Continuity Fund
Yes, I think when I feel comfortable that they will stick around I will feel comfortable with putting my wages in.
astannard··on Ask HN: What do you do on an Android phone that cannot be done on an iPhone?
daydream
astannard··on Y Combinator invests in Monzo through its Continuity Fund
I do like Monzo, they are one of the few startups I have invested in. I tend to personally use them for my fun money and still use my long time bank for paying the bills and getting my wages etc I transfer my monthly spending money to Monzo and when that runs out the fun stops.
astannard··on Android now forces apps to include proprietary code for push notifications
Amoungst this big thread, I've not noticed any evidence for this and the original article does not back this up with anything. Is the allegation that google are using battery warnings to push people towards using firebase notifications? Has anyone any experience of this?
astannard··on Running Out of Children, a South Korea School Enrolls Illiterate Grandmothers
In the UK we have 'Adult Education' where schools are often used for evening classes for adults. They tend to offer IT training, foreign language studies as well as creative subjects. I have been to a few for learning to make Pottery, and back in the day 'Flash Programming'
astannard··on EU and Japan create world's biggest free trade zone
They were being ironic as we wont be in the zone in a few weeks
astannard··on Idiots with drones have shut down the UK’s second largest airport
I was thinking a kind of chaff, long wires coated in a thin film of plastic to slow their decent, fire a load of these into the air around the drone and it will come down by tieing up its propellers. I also considered rubber bullets would work too.
astannard··on Coders Automating Their Own Job
I automated my job at a company. I did not tell management for a week after but was then bored. It took another few months of me nagging them for more work before the believed me and gave me another project.

It was a business critical application I inherited that was highly unreliable, my job was to keep it running. I just reworked the code so that it ran reliably and was resistant to outages etc. I also added in a few scheduled tasks etc to keep it ticking over

astannard··on Extreme Athleticism Is the New Midlife Crisis
I think it's just a bad title. The article itself encourages exercising
astannard··on AI-Driven Talent Acquisition Software Hits Marketplace
I really don't like the idea of some of this. Facial analysis just seems creepy and prone to dismiss people who would make candidates because they don't like their photo being taken etc. I like the idea of automated filtering to some extent and see how this would be useful but disagree with the use of photos.
astannard··on The case for electric scooters
Here is an article though it gives no rationale. I think ebikes are allowed on roads as they are pedal assisted. Bikes that don't require you to pedal are in a grey area. Since eScotters have no pedals they are not legal on the roads http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/magazine/5271874.stm
astannard··on The case for electric scooters
I love the idea of eScooters but in the UK they are illegal to use on the road or pavements. Unless the law changes they won't get adopted over here.
astannard··on Seaweed in Cow Feed Reduces Methane Emissions Almost Entirely
Does it work on humans too, just asking for a friend?

astannard··on The Stack Overflow Age
It definitely featured near the top of google results for many questions. I remember being annoyed at the paywall many a time.
astannard··on Lab-grown diamonds threaten viability of the real gems
So De Beers argument is that their shiny rocks dug out from the ground are worth far more than shiny rocks made in a machine. When no one really cares and people cant tell the difference apart from experts saying they are "fake" to keep their own industries assets from plummeting in value?
astannard··on When Citi Bikes Are Faster Than Taxis in New York City
In the UK they are limited to 25km/h in the USA it's 32 km/h. Although a lot of grey market imports are much faster
astannard··on When Citi Bikes Are Faster Than Taxis in New York City
I have been comparing biking and driving to work in Derby (UK) for my 7 mile commute. Biking can be quicker for me depending on traffic. I have just ordered an ebike that should shift the odds more in favour of this bike.

I always feel better having commuted on bike though

astannard··on Development on Remix OS and related consumer products is being discontinued
I have backed and received a few Jide products and love them. The ones I have received will continue to work and benefit my family. It is a shame they are moving away from the consumer space but I wish them luck.

I recently ordered a pinebook and intended on installing remix OS on it. I think I will choose differently now though.

astannard··on Show HN: StockNerd – A community for index fund investors
I will check it out. I have been reading Tony Robbins - 'Master The Game' which talks about index funds as a better alternative to high fee managed funds. This sounds like it could be a good source of info for picking them
astannard··on Voice Calls: Secure, Crystal-Clear, AI-Powered
With talk of neural interfaces and augmentation will we have apps in the future that support human to human encryption I wonder?
astannard··on Instagram grows to 1M active advertisers
Instagram was cool, now it's going downhill in my opinion due to many spam accounts. Here is my highly opinionated piece on it:

astannard··on Development content accidentally shipped on a DOS CD-ROM game from 1993
yeah I went onto wikipedia after I typed that. I guess photoshop took over. I only used the amiga version, I seem to recall seeing all this extra stuff on the game disk but never really used it.

Deluxe Paint was an amazing tool! I spent so many hours on that tool doing animations and paintings. I wonder what happened to that company?
astannard··on Magic Leap said to be ‘doing 1,000 things badly’ after raising $1.4B
Microsoft have Windows Holographic coming soon that will launch on 3rd party sets for Dell Lenovo etc. These are VR headsets with inside out tracking but without the AR tech. I guess they will be a good rival to the Vive but details are thin
