askaboutit··on DHS Press Secretary on Recent Media Reports of Potential Supply Chain Compromise
In this day and age it’s quite ironic for any country to say that they don’t hack other countries. China will hack, Russia will hack, japan will hack and USA will definitely hack.

It’s not just about control. It’s about corporate advantage as well.

askaboutit··on A Fan's Tesla Commercial (2 Minutes)
The same as would work for Uber or Lyft and be real. Right now.
askaboutit··on Elon Musk’s Ultimatum to Tesla: Fight the S.E.C., or I Quit
As someone who doesn’t own a Tesla, but did purchase a very crappy jacket they sold in 2012. I can say without Elon I put the whole company in “meh” mode. The truck, the roadster, the 3. All great products. The sense of its technology advancements. These stem from what Elon and the chief designer want. You can sense it. It’s like a heartbeat on the design.

Take Elon away. I’ll buy whatever dumb electric rolls off the lot. I’d only buy a Tesla car because I know that insanely dedicated, incredibly driven, “nutter” is still in charge of what happens. And the Easter eggs make the whole thing interesting. A normal CEO will never ok the things Elon does.

Apartments need to build charging areas. Bringing a lithium ion battery into your home is a bad idea. Any apartment complex with any liability will ban them.

Tesla’s and Ferrari’s get stolen. Everything can be stolen. That’s what insurance is for.

askaboutit··on DuckDuckGo Traffic
Never seen it work on mobile. Just tested it on Pc and it does work.

Who needs a built in lcd at all? No one. Butter Indian designers built maps in. That’s useful and the only reason anyone needs that. Also who needs two hands on the handle bars when you can plug in your phone and ride with one on the throttle and the other on maps. There is 0 use for plugging a phone into a scooter. Nor is it even safe to build that as a feature. You’re phone is not your priority whilst riding.

China also has the most share bikes too! They’re just mostly on piles of dumped to rust.

You can’t ride one of these cheaply made scooters legally on a footpath anywhere but the USA where 700w is ok without a license or insurance without finding some legal trouble. They’re mostly 350w-500w in China. Which makes them illegal to use in China and in Europe. They’re constantly taken off the roads in China by the police. In Europe the distance would be greater to travel and elevation too. China’s cities are mostly flat roads as theyre bulldozed and concreted. Have fun riding 250w up a hill with two Germans that weigh 90kg and are 6 foot 2.

Exactly. Because the price is no longer cheap. So you want quality and your quality to price point is a Vespa. In Asia it’s a Yamaha or a Honda. They’re the biggest markets and the quality their is still great. They only have to pivot to electric to beat niu with the same designs. But the kWh is the only thing stopping that. But Panasonic and Tesla are already leading the price on lithium ion and density and Panasonic is Japanese. Japan and India will take this market. China just doesn’t build decent vehicles. And by decent. I mean really refined.

90% peddled scooters. Not scooters or mopeds. They’re crappy two sweaters with peddles and a heavy under feet lead acid battery. They’re junk. Niu is a polished version of a cheap plastic scooter around the same concept. Who on earth wants to pull their battery out really when it weighs 14kg and you need to do it twice? They’re selling a china only problem in Europe. Zero thought.

This is the Indian player. Trually the first real forward thinking “scooter” I’ve seen that’s electric. Completely rebuilt from the “ground up” I’d say. Niu is slapped together hedge fund money.

askaboutit··on China's largest electric scooter maker Niu files for $150M IPO in the US
Most “scooters” in china are more like peddled scooters. Most people go to and from a short distance. Under 48v maybe 15Ah. That’s giving you about 30km or under real range. Most bikes use lead acid and are heavy as anything to carry around. Most goto the shops which is downstairs and maybe 10-20km max a day if at all on their bikes. The ones that need further might buy a lithium battery. But then there’s the cost, cheap scooter 1399rmb expensive lithium scooter 3000-6000. The niu is a Bosch motor. So nothing unique or engineered about it. It’s some oem with plastic and an app developer. They’re light. They’re basic. They’re cheap. Now go sit on a Yamaha 110 scooter. Or 125 scooter. Those are built well. They run nice and they’re great fun. All Yamaha needs to do is take an electric motor (easy) and place that with a locally sourced (Panasonic, Sanyo, Sony) battery and boom. Niu useless and the app became even more so. If anything. Indian made bikes are the only thing that could compete with Yamaha and Honda. There’s some real innovation coming out of there. I can’t remember the name of one bike. But it had an in built lcd panel that was actually useful with inbuilt maps, a super charging network, custom designed motor and a aluminium milled body. Really neat stuff. India is coming!
askaboutit··on DuckDuckGo Traffic
The servers used to return your results most likely made with intel hardware (known backdoors or open holes). Sophisticated, even mind blowing levels of encryption breaking and penetration. If you think your data is encrypted online, or that it can’t be traced at every step. You’re wrong. There is no privacy on the internet. The best privacy we all have is the power button.

Then you walk outside and facial recognition takes over.

Privacy is dead.

askaboutit··on DuckDuckGo Traffic
It’s also far slower to resolve queries and returning information. Doesn’t work without JavaScript. Needs !g for a lot of things. Wish it could be a google replacement but traffic or not. It ain’t.
askaboutit··on DuckDuckGo Traffic
Still use google for “150 usd to cad” conversions. Use it for translation. Use it for relevant news. Use it for accurate localized searches. Use it for finding relevant sourcing of companies. Calling DuckDuckGo a replacement of google is no where near right. Bing is more relevant. And people seem to hate on Bing. The only reason people love DuckDuckGo is because of the perceived privacy. But the NSA blows that right away.
askaboutit··on China's largest electric scooter maker Niu files for $150M IPO in the US
I feel Toyota is cushy with oil interests. So they’re definitely acting the slowest. Think about the major markets for scooters. Taiwan, Indonesia, Phillipines, Malaysia, Vietnam, Thailand. Going to be a very tough break up on oil for these countries. Not sure they’ll afford to retool to electric. Especially the dealer network that runs off repairs and parts. Considering an electric scooter is easily maintained and repaired.
askaboutit··on China's largest electric scooter maker Niu files for $150M IPO in the US
Yamaha, Honda + some other Japanese brand dominate this market in volume. They’re the ones that will switch over to electric without issue. The Japanese are definitely waiting longer than normal. But they’re the ones that will have the largest car and motorbike producers to make the switch when they want.

I’ve riden a Niu. Was nothing new or exciting. GPS, lcd and apps are the last thing people want out of a scooter. Go and back. Go and back. Go and back. That’s all a scooter is and will be used for. Because scooters a cheap item.

askaboutit··on Why Apple's 3D Touch failed miserably
It is the number 1 feature for me when writing text. I move between letters with accuracy and I don’t have to move my finger over the letters. Which often covers the letter I want to find.

I can’t believe it’s not in the XR.

askaboutit··on AWS cuts in half the price of most of its Lightsail virtual private servers
Meh. Look at the bandwidth pricing. If bandwidth is the Soda. DO is coke and lights sail is McDonald’s selling coke. You can get it direct at wholesale or buy it in a bottle for 5x more.

We are running a massive experiment on our own race in the search of never ending growth. Glass is fine. Reuse, recycle, cut down on waste.
askaboutit··on Netflix will now interrupt series binges with video ads for its other series
The worst part is the VPN blocks even for their own content. But their UI/UX is incredibly boring and does make it hard to search for items. They seem to want to feed you their own choices instead of helping you find what you want.
askaboutit··on Netflix will now interrupt series binges with video ads for its other series
The tides are turning on Netflix. People just don’t love the product anymore. I wonder if they’re pivoting for a sale to Disney or they’re just starting to be too big for their own good.

Either way. I wonder what will replace it.

askaboutit··on Impossible Burgers’ key, bloody ingredient gets long awaited nod from FDA
Have you watched the documentary or read about the pivot to profit from companies over profit from government spending?

The problem isn’t the FDA it’s the government cutting its budget. In such an obvious way that they want business to be able to do what they want. It’s gotten worse under Trump.

askaboutit··on When China Rules the Web
I wouldn’t worry too much. Just take a look at Chinese tech companies trying to enter new markets and how they’re not doing too well. Alibaba has the right idea. They just invest.
askaboutit··on Impossible Burgers’ key, bloody ingredient gets long awaited nod from FDA
The problem with trying to replace meat. Is the unknowns about why we survived as carnivores for thousands upon thousands of years and our current obsession to suddenly play god with a food supply.

We don’t know what we don’t know. And impossible doesn’t know why there would be side effects. Or they do and you’ll not know.

Buy grass fed organic meat and eat less of it. We already eat too much.

askaboutit··on Impossible Burgers’ key, bloody ingredient gets long awaited nod from FDA
I wouldn’t trust anything the FDA approves after watching the Netflix series on how it is simply a big Pharma publishing house now.

It’s so reliant on company money that it can’t do its duty to protect the people it is supposed to protect.

askaboutit··on When China Rules the Web
This is spot on. China can only win in its local market with SAAS and IAAS products. With terrible offerings for the most part with a handle of offerings that are really great. When it comes to matured products I feel China can win. DJI, Xiaomi, One Plus they’re good offerings of an already mature product.

But when it comes to bringing a totally new product to a global market. Is there anything that’s been “new” and not an iterative design on a already global product for a lesser price.

askaboutit··on When China Rules the Web
There are apparently 100 million VPN users in China. So people do access outside offerings. Everyone I met in China had used Instagram or Facebook. These things can’t be stopped.
askaboutit··on When China Rules the Web
The line that internet sovereignty protects against mainly American tech is false.

Japan. Indonesia. Germany. Australia. Malaysia. South Korea. Lots of countries have had competition and have been able to have localized offerings that won in a free market. But in China. There is no free market.

AWS might be the most prolific. Far better product but it’s useless in China because it can’t be controlled. So China ends up with Alicloud a far inferior product.

The US government is becoming increasingly more paranoid of itself too. The smarter way is things like the EU are doing. Champion greater privacy for local citizens with heavy laws and companies will fall in line. It’s soft governance. You win on both fronts. Controlling data and championing human rights. Closed fists win nothing. If China implemented local data laws with extreme privacy measures Facebook would be forced to localize its offering and keep all data in China whilst fixing a massive public image problem. But it has nothing to do with that. The party is paranoid and will kill competition to control data any day.

askaboutit··on Elon Musk Confronts a Fateful Tweet and an ‘Excruciating’ Year
Tinfoil hat on. Big industry hates Elon. Rockets are his now. And soon cars will be Tesla’s or at least Electric. Maybe they’ve been bashing him in order to break him. Don’t break the company. Break its leader.

Just need to take a look at how tides have turned so quickly against Elon in the last year. Seems very odd. And the short sellers could quite easily be hedge funds backed with big money interests.
