ascii_only··on What I know about cleaning and seasoning cast-iron skillets
Did you try it? I didn't know better and tried it long time ago. Cast iron skillet that was used for years. After few times in dishwasher significant chunk of seasoning was gone.
ascii_only··on Maps.me is gone, and we must bring it back
Paper maps are pretty heavy downgrade in a lot of places compared to something that have satellite + osm + topographic map. They are often outdated or not nearly as detailed.

You don't have too. There is Firefox ESR.
ascii_only··on Covid-19 is now officially a pandemic, WHO says
With season flu hospitals are not overwhelmed but with covid-19 they probably will be so even more people will die.
ascii_only··on Covid-19 is now officially a pandemic, WHO says
I misread parent comment but this was exactly my point. A lot of people die from flu although there is vaccine and mortality rate is at least one magnitude lower than Covid-19 and hospitals are not overwhelmed.
ascii_only··on Covid-19 is now officially a pandemic, WHO says
How many people die each year from flu worldwide? How many times mortality of Covid-19 is bigger?
ascii_only··on The Arctic may have crossed key threshold in a long-dreaded climate feedback
Lets do the math. We will assume that 100% individuals switched to electric cars and heat.

Commercial and Residential Sector Emissions for US - 12% All Transportation for US - 29% (It includes rail and aircraft. Only 60% of it is light duty vehicle and I couldnt find what percentage of it is commercial transport)

So we have 12%+ 29%0,6 = 32%. It is big number but now we have to produce same amount of energy in electricity. 79% of all electricity generation was fossil fuels.

32% (0.21) = 7%

So even if all individuals will stop using fossil fuels for heat and will use electric cars for transportation. We will have less than 10% of reduction.

ascii_only··on WoW streamer hires YouTubers who leeched off his stream to run official channel
How is your magic algorithm will distinguish "bad" channels from game reviewers, movie critics and other reviwers? Or should they all be banned too? Also how it will detect that something is fair use?
ascii_only··on The Arctic may have crossed key threshold in a long-dreaded climate feedback
>The increased trend over the past decade is also part of a larger trend.
ascii_only··on The Arctic may have crossed key threshold in a long-dreaded climate feedback
100 companies are responsible for 71% of emissions. Projects that you have listed are important but more likely only help individuals to feel that something is being fixed instead of any real impact.
ascii_only··on The Arctic may have crossed key threshold in a long-dreaded climate feedback
He doesn't argue with increase and only argues what is source of this spike.
ascii_only··on IBM casts doubt on Google's claims of quantum supremacy
It is difference between with this quantum chip we can brake encryption that would take 100000 years in 30 minutes or it would take us 50 years.
ascii_only··on My transition to an Ubuntu workstation
For steam games enable proton for all games. For all others try Lutris.

Proton is very good default option because valve worked to make a lot of game playable with it.

Lutris have specific profiles for specific game/software release so it can install required wine version and winetricks and sometimes even patches.

Doesn't this mean one compromised account = all data compromised?
ascii_only··on Common Voice – Mozilla's initiative to help teach machines how real people speak
In mozilla/voice-web/server/data/ but if at your profile tab in sentence-collector there are 0 sentences added than that means that your sentences hadn't been added even to sentence-collector for approval.
ascii_only··on Common Voice – Mozilla's initiative to help teach machines how real people speak
They just not very clear. If you language "in progress" then you need collect 5k sentences. They have special web app called "sentence collector". In which you can approve sentences or add new ones. Each sentence should be approved by 3 people. After sentences are approved they get released to GitHub. After 5k sentences are approved you will be able to record audio and listen to recordings as in any other "big" language. As practice shows you need very small amount of people to do it. 4-5 is enough.
ascii_only··on Common Voice – Mozilla's initiative to help teach machines how real people speak
There is feedback in sentence collector. If your sentence too long it will tell you straight away. If your sentence is rejected by people it will appear in "rejected sentences" tab. If your sentences are approved you can see it in GitHub repo.
ascii_only··on Microsoft introduces Windows 10 X for dual-screen devices
I don't argue that iPhone was revolutionary although I think it was way less revolutionary than average consumer thinks. I argue with very specific claim. OP have claimed that "being able to use a browser anywhere was the killer feature" and it is just not true because most of the market could do it. All symbian, blackberry and Windows Mobile phones could do it.

>Did you forget large touchscreen, no physical buttons and no need for stylus?

iPhones did have physical home button and O2 XDA II from 2003 has the same touchscreens size as original iPhone. Also you are forgetting that first capacitive touchscreens were awful. Qwerty keyboard or resistive touchscreen were just nicer to use. And you didn't have to use stylus. Most people who I know used stylus in few very specific applications and they just use finger for most tasks but to be fair you had to be very precise.

ascii_only··on My startup is not attracting paying customers. Should I shut it down?
His site on second page of HN. Of course he will get Hug of Death.
ascii_only··on Microsoft introduces Windows 10 X for dual-screen devices
Is that sarcasm, because I had cheap Symbian 40 phone with Opera mobile way before iPhone was announced. Browser that i used everywhere. And this Symbian phones were majority of the market. Also Windows mobile phones that only geeks were using at the time also had browser and also way before iPhone.
ascii_only··on 16-Inch MacBook Pro Said to Launch in September
> Some models are quite noisy for example.

You can change fan speed curve. NBFC with one is suggested profiles working great for me and my laptop became much less noisy. But nbfc was my only option because my hp laptop has unrecognizable by linux fans so fancontrol cant control it.

ascii_only··on Observations on Wikipedia Behavior (2008)
Not op but was interested in OpenStreetMap for awhile. Although there were no editors but there were people who thought they knew better and they have deleted huge chunks of map because they didn't like it and they will redraw it "sometime later".
