ary··on Meeting A Troll
First, I'm well aware of the definition of psychopathy. Second, psychopathy is not a binary condition. An individual can be on a spectrum of severity, or (as has been noted by people researching the condition) psychopaths can and do mimic the responses to emotion that they see in others but do not feel themselves. Perhaps he is or perhaps he isn't, but without additional action of the part of the OP and the kid's parents there is no way he will be properly diagnosed until something similar, but more severe, might happen.

So, yes, we are making judgements in this thread, but not everyone here is being "judgmental." Making a considered decision about available evidence is a reasonable act. The repercussions of this young man's actions should not have been watered down because of his age, and especially not in light of the toll it exacted on his victim. Others might be calling for extreme punishment, but I am calling for appropriate response.

It's difficult to read this and not think that a psychopath was let off the hook because he was young. Outing and labeling these kinds of people is important to curbing the amount of future damage they can do.

There is bullying, there is harassment, and then there is what the OP experienced. No reasonable, rational individual who is just "acting out" in adolescence takes it to these levels. As much as I feel for the OP he should have taken legal action and had the youth examined by a credible mental health professional if only as a favor to others.

Myspace previews design concept video. I'll believe this interface in a browser when I see it.

That said, it's a nice concept.

ary··on GoldieBlox: The Engineering Toy for Girls
To this point there seems to be strong and widespread anecdotal evidence that many boys don't want to seem to much like girls by playing with "girly" toys and many girls feel the same way towards "boys" toys. There is perhaps (or perhaps not) a problem with this phenomenon that, over time, needs to be addressed. In the meantime things like this seem to be a great way to spread interest in science and engineering among both genders.
ary··on Selling Yourself
Let me propose a better conclusion that has the potential succeed over vague claims about the human subconscious.

One of the best ways to get hired is to, like all great American beers, have the great taste of social proof with the less filling property of appearing to be inexpensive. Business people very much want qualified, capable employees, but they want them at the best possible price. Giving off the appearance that you are capable but unproven makes a business person's leverage sense tingle like no tomorrow. This, at least, has been my experience. Your mileage may vary.

I'm not sure that, as far as the general population goes, craving the "next big thing" is a global phenomenon. Those more concerned with getting attention (citizens of wealthier countries) over practicality might be more inclined to care. That would certainly help explain the hipster population plaguing the United States.

ary··on Google Fiber
> Google has a proven track record of doing things in my favor.

The current, publicly acknowledged level of intercourse between Google and the U.S. Federal Government is already worrisome. Perhaps your data has been a part of those exchanges, perhaps it hasn't. You and I don't know.

Now, imagine that Google begins relaying traffic unrelated to their services on behalf of internet users. It isn't hard to fathom that Google will come under the same pressures to give the U.S. government access to user traffic as have Verizon, AT&T, Comcast, and others.

That could just be the tip of the iceberg though. How long before the company caves in and decides to start including user internet traffic analysis into the search engine's signaling and ranking? Would it still be doing you a favor?

Edit: typo

On the very, very slight chance that this isn't a troll it should be voted down to oblivion for being the purest form of anecdote.

ary··on Apple is back on EPEAT
Should the price, quality of the product, quality of the service, or simply the way a company does business not jive with your principles... don't do business with that company.
ary··on Apple is back on EPEAT
The user serviceability argument is tired. The readers of HN are disproportionally more willing and eager to service their own tech than the overall population. The only group this really isn't good for is the third-party repair companies.

Apple has made it clear they want a tight relationship with the customer at every step of the product experience. This is (from Apple's point of view) just strengthening that relationship.

ary··on Mac Pro gets half-assed “update”
Neglect on the internals side is objectionable, but what of the the case? It's still just as (subjectively) beautiful today as it was six years ago. Does a product really need to radically look different just to be "new?"
ary··on Mac Pro gets half-assed “update”
Because there are audio/video professionals who want a Mac that has hardware expandability similar to a PC. The market becomes more niche by the day, but it's there.

ary··on Apple CEO Tim Cook Spotted at video game designer Valve headquarters
> In terms of casual gaming, the xbox 360's Kinect and Wii have already been wildly successful. One could argue that as an entertainment all in one hub, where the whole household buys casual games over the marketplace and watches TV shows and movies effortlessly, the xbox has failed.

Really?

Try to think of game support in Apple's vaporware console/tv-box as less of a strategy and more of a tactic.

ary··on Apple CEO Tim Cook Spotted at video game designer Valve headquarters
From: http://penny-arcade.com/report/editorial-article/valves-gabe...

Quoting Gabe Newell,

> Well, if we have to sell hardware we will. We have no reason to believe we’re any good at it, it’s more we think that we need to continue to have innovation and if the only way to get these kind of projects started is by us going and developing and selling the hardware directly then that’s what we’ll do. It’s definitely not the first thought that crosses our mind; we’d rather hardware people that are good at manufacturing and distributing hardware do that.

Who do we know that's good at manufacturing and selling hardware? Which company has had explosive growth in the video game sector as a platform provider in the last few years? What company famously has its eye on the television market?

Valve and Apple have priorities and incentives that align nicely for a partnership on a new console-like thing. They also seem very alike when it comes to design values.

ary··on The One Product That Makes Apple a Trillion-Dollar Company Overnight
> Apple will sell $5B in apps this year and make $1.5B from their 30% stake. Almost pure profit, as the App Store can't cost more than $100M to operate. In fact, the marketing of the App Store is probably 10x the cost of running it (someone in advertising please fact check my ass on that one).

It has been widely suspected that the App Store and iTunes are loss-leaders for Apple. The company itself has reported that it ekes out a profit from those divisions. The App Store and iTunes exist to sell iOS devices and Macs.

A payments API makes sense just like the in-app purchases API does. This is a lot of hand-waving for something that has probably always been on the table.

ary··on The story of Google Guava and patches
The point that seems to be missed here is that Google is eating their own dog food. Doing such they are hesitant to fix what "ain't broke." Were this merely code that was being thrown over the fence from time to time I'm sure you'd see a higher patch adoption rate.
