arthur_sav··on Show HN: I am Building a Producthunt alternative
Great, just posted my product there PandaExtract
arthur_sav··on GitHub cuts AI deals with Google, Anthropic
Doesn't that mean it's just inevitable what will happen.

The question is not longer IF machines are capable, the question is WHEN. And the when is no longer decades away.

arthur_sav··on Show HN: Turn Your Videos into Screenshots
If you want to take more than 3 screenshots then this would be faster. Usually you would have to stop the video and select the screenshot area. Plus I'd like them to look a bit nicer than a normal screenshot.

The purpose I made this was to create additional content from videos (blogs, social media posts). So, I plan to add some additional stuff like export to .webp to optimize size or different aspect ratios.

arthur_sav··on 18 Months with a Framework 13
As a kid I installed Ubuntu in the first laptop I ever owned. One day, I put it in my backpack. It probably woke up from sleep and got fried because it was unusable after that.

Still holding a grudge on Linux for that one.

arthur_sav··on Ask HN: What are you working on (August 2024)?
I built a chrome plugin to scrape data.

It's pretty good for List and Lead extraction. https://pandaextract.com/

arthur_sav··on What happened to blogs
It used to be good and provided you with an audience.
arthur_sav··on Apple's On-Device and Server Foundation Models
They'll inject whatever ideology / dogma is "the current thing" into this.
arthur_sav··on Almost 30% of Americans Say College Not Worth It in Pew Poll
>I think attending college may have value in terms of social life.

Maybe 10 years ago.

I'd argue the opposite, college/uni has negative impact in your life.

arthur_sav··on Passkeys: A shattered dream
> 1Password is a closed-source, cloud-hosted service. At any time, for any reason, they can close and delete your account

They used to offer their apps offline and you could "host" it anywhere. Venture Capital ruined them.

arthur_sav··on Apple users are being locked out of their Apple IDs with no explanation
Can't tell if this is a bot comment or I just don't understand a word
arthur_sav··on Redis adopts dual source-available licensing
> community and developers will move to.

I have never seen a fork last long enough.

arthur_sav··on Boeing tells airlines to check pilot seats after shift led plane to plunge
Seems that Boeing is plagued with incompetence.
arthur_sav··on Boeing 777 loses tire while taking off from SF, crushing cars on the ground
> Boeing shares seem unaffected by this event.

Probably because it's considered too big to fail. It's pretty much backed by the US gov.

arthur_sav··on Netlify just sent me a $104k bill for a simple static site
Oh wow, I'm already hosting a small website with them and was thinking of hosting more. Definitely out of the question now, will move to Cloudflare.
arthur_sav··on Netlify just sent me a $104k bill for a simple static site
We don't need regulation for everything. Let customers vote with their wallet or even start a few lawsuits.

Adding more regulation makes the system slower.

arthur_sav··on Ask HN: People who switched from GPT to their own models. How was it?
OpenAI currently leads the front on (commercial) AI, so I doubt people will switch. In fact most offerings become outdated pretty fast and everyone else tries to play catch up.

Imagine using a GPT-2 type model when everyone else is using GPT-4. Until the dust settles there's no point in investing in alt models imo, unless you're leading the research.

arthur_sav··on Microsoft tried to sell Bing to Apple in 2018, according to Google court filings
> They have the money to hire anyone they want.

Just throwing money at the problem doesn't actually work.

arthur_sav··on Pulsar, the best code editor since Atom
VSCode is a good successor imo. I liked Atom for it's simplicity and not getting in your way - which i think vscode does well.
arthur_sav··on What's the fun in writing on the internet anymore?
Trust and personal brand will have a bigger role to play in the future. That goes for businesses as well.

We humans are not really good at processing a lot of information - and that's what this is about. An overflow of information, choices and products. Everyone is trying to sell something.

So building a brand that people can trust and follow makes things easier. Apple is a great example of that.

arthur_sav··on Our next-generation model: Gemini 1.5

arthur_sav··on Spark – A web micro framework for Java and Kotlin
At my company we dropped Spark in favor of Ktor since it's not properly maintained.
arthur_sav··on Show HN: Pika – Simple blogging software
Love the minimalism of this and the other software listed on your site. More apps should just do one thing and do it well.
arthur_sav··on Show HN: Pika – Simple blogging software
Wonder what Icelanders think of Pika-chu
arthur_sav··on Netflix: Piracy is difficult to compete against and growing rapidly
I like watching movies/series from 2000-2010s. Trying to access that content through streaming is like a whack-a-mole game. Some content is available to some streaming services, in some countries, for a small amount of time. Give me a break.

Piracy all the way.

arthur_sav··on Physical cash is dying–and you don't need to be a conspiracist to worry
No. Too complicated to understand the risks. I would use it only if it becomes mainstream and user friendly.
arthur_sav··on Physical cash is dying–and you don't need to be a conspiracist to worry
Lets be honest, bitcoin is not usable for every day transactions.
arthur_sav··on Physical cash is dying–and you don't need to be a conspiracist to worry
It's not vendors but governments that are pushing for this.
arthur_sav··on New GitHub Copilot research finds 'downward pressure on code quality'
For me it's useful for new languages that I'm not familiar with, saves a lot of googling time and looking up the docs.
arthur_sav··on Spotube: Open-source Spotify-Youtube client
Good luck finding your favorite movie on Netflix. And Spotify keeps taking songs off their catalogue which ruins my favorite playlists and saved songs.

To be fair, streaming services are usually not at fault here. They have to negotiate with the content owners. But at the end of the day, I don't care.

Piracy still has place and it's not a money issue.

arthur_sav··on I regret selling my startup
Exactly. Living comfortably in the middle of nowhere is a luxury and that's why all the rich do it. Everybody else needs to be close to the rat race otherwise they can't afford to eat.
