art0rz··on Doom Running on a Toothbrush
For those without a Twitter account confused by its hostile UI, here is a link to the video https://twitter.com/atc1441/status/1762969015197053110
art0rz··on Lenovo's Project Crystal is first laptop with a transparent MicroLED display
> I doubt any company has done usability studies on the damn things. They'll get as far as prototypes like these, people will try to use them, quickly figure out they're complete shit, and all the transparent-specific R&D will have been wasted unless it can be pivoted into HUD tech, but HUDs can't be made like this because the focal length is wrong.

Products like these are definitely not supposed to sell well and Lenovo doesn't expect it to. What it does is deliver a "wow" factor. This is effectively advertising.

art0rz··on CSS WG resolved to officially work on native custom functions and mixins
The benefit of this is that it runs in the browser. E.g. you can change a CSS variable and the change would propagate to wherever it's being used.
art0rz··on Why I Live in IRC (2015)
For some reason I always used `screen` and never considered alternatives, it's just how I learned to use irssi.
art0rz··on Servo Engine Updates Bring CSS Tables and Its Browser Gets Back/Forward Buttons
> Meanwhile Servo's basic example web browser has now received support for... back and forward buttons

It's their example browser. Not the engine itself.

art0rz··on Oxlint – JavaScript linter written in Rust
No. A linter does more than formatting. Besides, some rules may simply not be relevant to what I'm working on while other rules are. Prettier works well enough for most people because it only covers syntax, and not whether or not you can use await in a loop, or should add tracks to your video element, or if jsx should be in scope, etc.
art0rz··on Oxlint – JavaScript linter written in Rust
I would really like to speed up my workflow with a faster ESLint alternative, but my ESLint configs are often very customized, with rules and plugins that are not available (yet) in the alternative solutions, making them a non-starter for me. It'll take a while for these alternatives to reach plugin/rule parity.
art0rz··on Nothing's iMessage app was a security catastrophe, taken down in 24 hours
Right? Even if RCS is adopted by every major manufacturer, it's far too late to grab any market share. Everyone uses iMessage/WhatsApp now. Text messaging is dead, even if you can send gifs/stickers/group chats/video/etc.
art0rz··on Show HN: Free High-quality TailwindCSS Components. No attribution required
Not really. I copied one of the components and picked a random line. Some were worse than this.
art0rz··on Show HN: Free High-quality TailwindCSS Components. No attribution required
I find CSS terrible to work with but I fail to see how this is any better.

art0rz··on The quest for a simple smartwatch
I've owned a Steel HR for many years and I can highly recommend them. I wanted a basic smart watch with a classic analog look that isn't too flashy but offers notifications, basic fitness tracking with a battery that I don't have to think about very often (we have enough stuff to keep charged in our daily lives). The Steel HR fits the bill perfectly. I've gotten many compliments about it too, and people are surprised to learn it is a smart watch. Don't expect to read full emails on it. But then again, I never understood why people would want to.

As for size, I never thought it was too small. In fact, I would say it's a perfect size for my wrist.

art0rz··on The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom Release
IIRC load times were improved in a later update (although that update came too late, imo)
art0rz··on ManyCam dishonored my lifetime license
Most likely there is a clause that allows them to change the "Lifetime" subscription to anything they want.
art0rz··on When Discord is open in the background, NVIDIA card will not reach full speed
Unlike Slack, discord actually pauses them when the window is not focused.
art0rz··on Sam Bankman-Fried accused of possible witness tampering [pdf]
Mostly to protect himself from doing more dumb things.
art0rz··on Ask HN: Why did Frontend development explode in complexity?
Where the majority of the complexity was in the backend. Now, the complexity has simply moved.

I'm quite happy I don't need to have two different codebases in different languages for most things anymore. I'm more than happy to offload it to the browser to save me some effort, time and money.

art0rz··on Blob Opera (2020)
This is great.

Reminded me of Pink Trombone https://dood.al/pinktrombone/

art0rz··on The scourge of job title inflation
Thanks. I wasn't aware of the nuance.
art0rz··on Ask HN: What companies offer part-time positions?
Here in The Netherlands it is quite common for employees to work 4 days a week and receive 80% pay. Most employees will even ask you about it during the interview process.

Most of the people I know who do this is because of the cost of daycare here, which is in most places higher than your rent or mortgage. Both partners will work 4 days but have different off days, so they pay only for 3 days of day care.

art0rz··on The scourge of job title inflation
IIRC in my country (The Netherlands), "engineer" is a protected title like "lawyer". It requires special officially recognized training.
art0rz··on Plastic recycling remains a 'myth': Greenpeace study
A new waste processing plant was recently opened near my hometown (Amsterdam) which is able to sort plastic from waste automatically, so we're able to mix plastic and waste in one bin. It's pretty amazing, but plastic packaging can be so bulky that my bin has started filling up much faster than before and trips to the bin outside have become much more frequent.
art0rz··on Dear JetBrains, Don't mess with your UI
Kind of a strange move indeed, considering their announcement of Fleet, which aims to do exactly that
art0rz··on Factorio Is the Best Technical Interview We Have (2021)
It's common to use constant combinators to tell the user what item goes on what input belt/pipe. Blueprints also allow you to provide some text.

Being able to plop down a block that allows you to enter some text would be nice, though. I'm sure there's mods that do that.

art0rz··on Show HN: My small program from 2007 that gave Internet Explorer tabs
I used to work tech support for a DSL company. The tools used to log customer interactions were slow and buggy. I taught myself VB to fix a lot of issues in the UI, and automate a large part of my job.

I taught a coworker (who had never touched any code before) some of it. After a few months he moved on to do data entry for another company. When I saw his title on LinkedIn change to "automation engineer" after a while I was curious and had to ask what happened. He had automated most of his data entry job. The bosses got curious and asked to share his secret which he did, got a fat raise and a nice title. Sadly, most of his team was let go, but I'm happy I helped him become a programmer.

art0rz··on Sunsetting the Bethesda.net launcher and migrating to Steam
You can already do that with Steam[0]. They allow publishers to generate keys for free. You could sell the keys on your own store and skip Steam's 30%(?) cut while reaping the benefits of their software delivery infrastructure. There's a fair use policy[1] involved, though.

art0rz··on Ask HN: How did you correct your sleep patterns?
I don't have anything to add to what advice has already been given, but I wanted to mention my sleep schedule which is opposite of most people's problems.

Going to bed and sleeping on time is not a problem. I can pretty much go to bed any time after 9pm and fall asleep in 5-10 minutes. My problem is with waking up. It's not that I can't, it's that I just naturally wake up very early between 5 and 7am. Even now, when I've been working from home for 2 years and I could have improved my life so much by sleeping in until at least 8am, I still wake up very early. I'm usually not even rested, and I feel tired all day. I really don't have much to do at that hour and my partner is still asleep so I just play video games for a couple of hours. There's thousands of webpages of advice for not being able to sleep or sleeping being able to get up, but I can't really find anything for my problem.

art0rz··on How trains could replace planes in Europe
That depends IMO. For local city destinations such as Boston, Philly, DC, etc. trains are much quicker.
art0rz··on RenderingNG: An architecture that makes and keeps Chrome fast for the long term
To me it feels like bloated browser profiles makes the browsers sluggish.

I get annoyed with how slow Chrome is, so I switch Firefox. After a while the Firefox profile gets bloated and I get annoyed and switch back to Chrome with a clean profile and it feels really quick again. Ad infinitum.

art0rz··on [dead]
It is really surprising how bad/slow Slack is compared to Discord
art0rz··on New Laptop: Thinkpad P14s
I own one of these. Upgraded from my Surface Book 2. No complaints so far, except that the Fn key is where the Ctrl key should be and I keep pressing the Fn key :)
