arkitaip··on Ask HN: How do I keep side projects productive without it getting annoying/dull?
All side projects suffer from this fate once they get serious enough. Suddenly you can't just do the fun stuff; the other 90% work that's more mundane now needs your attention.

This is where you have to decide if this side project should be: abandoned, continued as a slow burner, or become a real business venture requiring serious work and resources.

As a person who habitually creates new side projects of various complexity and then abandons them equally fast, the only advice I can give is: don't let anxiety get you to you no matter how you decide to move forward with this or other side projects.

arkitaip··on Ask HN: Being comfortable using your “real life persona” online
I am doing the same journey - even getting a blog under my real name - and it can be unsettling as someone who early on learned that you never ever give away personal information, let alone use your real name, online.

Just blogging has eased some of my worries. Once I did the actual work and realize that the real issue that no one cares let alone reads my stuff, I stopped caring so much. Also, it helped to role-play how I would react if people "confronted" me about something I've written (my texts are so tame that it wouldn't be an issue).

arkitaip··on Show HN: A flat file portfolio website for research engineers
Goddamn is plain HTML+CSS beautiful wipes a tear.
arkitaip··on [dead]
Good luck to all of them. The situation sucks but hopefully they won't have too much trouble finding better work.
arkitaip··on EU says Apple’s App Store breaks competition rules after Spotify complaint
They might just increase their fees. Or increase their pricing on other products.
arkitaip··on Google wants to know your exact age. Pretends it's “the law”
Another data point over which they can shut down your account ("You lied about your age. That's not only TOS, it's against the law.").
arkitaip··on Should I implement email verification during sign up?
> This makes me think - should there be a link in the email that says, "This was not me" -- that allows the website dev to ban the offending IP?

Maybe not ban the IP but definitely remove the email from the account (after a confirmation CTA). Some services do this and if I known them I hit the link.

arkitaip··on 12,000 people sharing their salaries in this spreadsheet. Please add yours
Really? You don't see why it is useful for people of all backgrounds to their salaries?
arkitaip··on Show HN: Direktiv with new UI and Back end
Gorgeous UI.
arkitaip··on Ask HN: What should've been easily doable but is annoyingly difficult?
Even if you're an experienced dev you rarely start coding from scratch. I almost always use Boostrap for simple projects because it does 99% of the work and looks great across many devices and UA.
arkitaip··on Should I implement email verification during sign up?
Please do. I hate getting transactional email intended for someone else because the devs don't verify email addresses. It doesn't even mean you have to do verification early in the onboarding process, but definitely before you start sending any email.
arkitaip··on Google can ban your Android app if they think you’ve clicked on your own ads
Hover has the best search interface IMO (it's GETified so you can create a custom search engine in Firefox) but it's expensive, especially if you are constantly buying domains.
arkitaip··on HN Meta: A YC founder's comment was edited to remove their username
What do you mean, these sorts of requests? If you mean deleting ownership data as is the case here - that's incredibly problematic and erodes trust in the site and you as a moderator.
arkitaip··on Jason Fried: On Making Decisions
Sometimes it's better not to communicate publicly at all than to write vague nonsense like this, especially on a controversial issue you've caused as a founder.

Imagine Basecamp employees reading this blog post, trying to make sense of the latest controversy at their workplace; does this add anything meaningful to the discussion other than, "shit will blow over, deal with it".

arkitaip··on HN Meta: A YC founder's comment was edited to remove their username
C'mon dude, 2017 was a totally different age where commanding your own bot army was as American as apple pie.

Nice job, dang and friends.

arkitaip··on Changes at Basecamp: A Fan Translation
I think one of the reasons why people are pushing back against David's and Jason's narrative is because for years they have positioned themselves and Basecamp as the consciences of the industry who are more ethical and compassionate than the competition, especially big corporations. When you put yourself on a pedestal but then take actions that contradict your values, you come off as a hypocrite.

For a company that claims to be progressive and inclusive, it's surprising how these major cultural changes can be implemented without even notifying employees let alone discussing these matters with them. A lot of very bright people work at Basecamp, some who shine much brighter than either David or Jason, maybe they had valuable feedback on these profound changes in culture?

I'm not even saying these changes are bad but I do think that they were unwisely implemented, seem to contradict Basecamp's culture and will probably cast a long shadow on David's and Jason's credibility.

arkitaip··on Dropbox is way too clingy
This is the result of MANY deliberate design decisions where management have decided they should weaponize dark patterns against customers because if they are about to leave anyways, well surely it doesn't really matter how they are treated?

It's not like departing customers will tell their friends about the shitty offboarding experience they had, right? No one would blog about how horrible it is to cancel their Dropbox subscription, thereby persuading future customers from trying out Dropbox, right?

At least they don't require a phone call like The New York Times.

arkitaip··on Basecamp Follows Coinbase in Banning Politics Talk at Work
This is hypocritical by David and Jason who are super political on Twitter all the time. Here's what David tweeted just a few months ago [0]:

"Imagine thinking that you have to appear apolitical to lead a company rather than simply not advocate for shitty politics, like overworking employees, putting students through hell, stealing identities on Instagram, or controlling bot armies? Anyways..."

Guess politics is only ok when it fits the ambitions of the bosses. Man does Basecamp and its leadership seem lost these days.

arkitaip··on Ask HN: Options to build a little online store
"...building my own almost-serverless solution ... Netlify headless CMS ... GitHub http API ... markdown + front matter ..."

You don't want your relative to be locked into a hosted solution like Shopify yet you want to create a totally custom solution that probably only you will be familiar with?

No. Do everyone a solid and stick with Shopify. Learn how to create a theme for Shopify and you're set. Or learn how to actually develop for Wordpress+Woocommerce if you want to host it yourself. Both options take care of tons of stuff in the background so you don't have too. Do you really want to spend the next months implementing the most basic ecom functionality?

arkitaip··on Show HN: Emojicons
Cool, didn't know SVG has this capability but man does it look ugly
arkitaip··on Show HN: Emojicons
Neat. Makes me wonder why we can't do complex favicon design using html/css. Imagine being able to enter text and style it using layouts, fonts, colors, etc.
arkitaip··on [dead]
Somoene please come get your algo, it is making the humans uncomfortable.
arkitaip··on Ask HN: Have you figured out how to cut your own hair during the pandemic?
Buzzcut every few months. A quality hair trimmer (mine's Moser 1400) makes a HUGE difference.
arkitaip··on Product-focused and sales-focused companies
I can't think of a single company that would advocate anything else and yet all of them prioritize money over product, even if it means enacting petty user-hostile policies.
arkitaip··on Ask HN: I bought Voltaren at the chemist, now Google shows me ads for it. Why?
Have you been googling about your symptoms, illnesses or anything else that can have a connection to drugs like Voltaren?
arkitaip··on Show HN: How we are building a radically different Creative Agency from India
Very interested in following this over the years. Worker organized businesses can work well but they seem to require tons of commitment to the idea and hard work. You aren't just doing the work your customers hire you to do, you have to work a lot of the management fundamentals of your business in a way that traditional don't; the path forward for them had already been paved and is well traveled by countless other companies.

Also, I don't know a single org. that has a truly flay hierarchy because management tends to require its own expertise and dedicated work. Any thoughts on this?

arkitaip··on One-Click Anonymous Login
What are the use cases for anonymous logins from a business POV? Even if you are legit pro customer privacy, this feels like it requires some fundamental changes in how your business perceives and treats its customers, not just their data.

arkitaip··on Squarespace S1
Sounds like you know what your customers want and deliver on that. That's better than most devs who want to shove their favorite language/framework down the throat of their poor customers.
arkitaip··on Squarespace S1
> We may acquire or invest in companies, which may divert our management’s attention and result in additional dilution to our stockholders. We may be unable to integrate acquired businesses and technologies successfully or achieve the expected benefits of such acquisitions.

Squarespace and Shopify would be an super combo. Individually they currently suck at the other's main area of focus - Shopify has weak design capabilities, Squarespace e-com is too basic - but together they would offer great value in terms of online presence for businesses and still keep their edge.
