arkitaip··on Weinstein: Crypto is the post-Newtonian money
Eric Weinstein is an exhausting person to read and listen to.
arkitaip··on Salesforce outage: Global DNS downfall started by engineer trying a quick fix
Kinda lame how much the postportem focuses on the actions of the engineer and not the countless issues that allowed this issue to even happen.
arkitaip··on Google's Docs Dilemma
Why do you think Google is so slow to "innovate" new apps for Google Workspace? Like why doesn't Workspace has its own version of Trello, Asana or Airtable?
arkitaip··on Top streamer says Twitch revoked her ability to run ads without warning
Twitch is proof that a random approach to policy is even worse than a draconian one. At least with a draconian approach to policy you know exactly what the rules are whereas the random approach makes you second guess what's allowed or not and makes it difficult to make future plans.
arkitaip··on Site Isolation in Firefox
Thank YOU for writing comments like these - it encourages us web devs to work harder on accessibility.
arkitaip··on [dead]
It's sad that both of them were stuck in a loveless marriage for so many years. Not even with all their billions, power and resources could they find happiness in their SO.
arkitaip··on The “Marketing Is Evil” Problem
I see this in B2B marketing all the time when it's obvious that customers are doing an apples to oranges comparison when it comes to your products and those of a certain competitor. Example: your competitor sells basic desktop accounting software targeting small businesses while you target large corporations with a complex SaaS. You have to acknowledge the customer's comparison and you can even suggest your competitor's product to customers because those are customers that you cannot service anyways.
arkitaip··on The “Marketing Is Evil” Problem
One doesn't follow from the other. Marketing isn't equally accessible because companies compete for the spaces in which marketing takes place, regardless if it's a highway billboard, a site banner or a Instagram post. The people who owned these spaces want to get the best possible ROI and that results in certain price points due to competition.
arkitaip··on The “Marketing Is Evil” Problem
So we can agree that by absolute necessity a company needs to market its products and services due to competitors doing the same. Since, you know, you can't actually outlaw marketing, businesses have no choice to compete in this area.

Also, marketers don't work in a vacuum, they are hired by managers and business owners to create exposure and help create growth. Of course marketers work for money, we all do and very few us do work that actually help customers in a profoundly meaningful way no matter how we rationalize our work.

arkitaip··on The “Marketing Is Evil” Problem
I bet the majority of the less nuanced comments are made by people who have never worked in a business capacity let alone ran a business. Tell any small business owner that they must not do marketing and they will consider you utterly ignorant or insane.
arkitaip··on The “Marketing Is Evil” Problem
That's called marketing.
arkitaip··on The “Marketing Is Evil” Problem
Sometimes you miss out on amazing products at lower prices because they don't market themselves properly. Example: safety razors are cheaper and better than any Gillette razor you might buy but very few people use safety razors because they have fallen out of fashion. Why? Because they don't market their products anywhere.
arkitaip··on The “Marketing Is Evil” Problem
What about when charities engage in marketing to solve the dire needs of millions, are they being evil?
arkitaip··on Notion – Reaching 1M users with 18 employees
> Notion was built using first principles thinking.

First principles thinking has really become yet another buzzword. I mean, what does that even mean in this context where notion is an amalgamation of every office productivity tool out there.

> He saw that people did not want to learn a new tool from scratch - people want to use the tools to solve their problems.

And yet the Notion team decided to create a new tool from scratch, one that's actually quite complex and often criticized for having a steep learning curve.

> Not only have they built a product that is challenging and beating the Goliaths of the industry such as Microsoft Word, Google Docs and Evernote, they have also grown a community that loves the company.

I would be surprised if Notion even has 0.1% of Word's userbase.

arkitaip··on Building a personal website in 2021
The free version of Wordpress.com has become gnarly in recent years. They even use a dark pattern to trick you into thinking you have to buy a domain for your blog when in fact you can always just use a wordpress.com sub domain.
arkitaip··on Faster web fonts
Two don't make a trend when we're talking about billions of web sites. Typography it too important to abandon it in favor of whatever defaults Microsoft or Apple have enabled on their platforms.
arkitaip··on [dead]
The content isn't accessible without login.
arkitaip··on Show HN: Podcast] I quit my job to focus 100% on my side project
I really like the short time format. A couple of minutes every day seems totally doable for even busy entrepreneurs. Probably faster and easier than doing the equivalent in blogging, no?
arkitaip··on My Robot Vacuum Cleaner Is Afraid of Sunshine
Clearly what is needed are remote controlled vacuum cleaners where an operator can take control when the vacuum stumbles upon imaginery cliffs. Maybe one day we could have people directly manipulate vacuum cleaners in physical space.
arkitaip··on Ask HN: Do you still optimize/test websites for Firefox
I mostly use Firefox so making sure projects work with it happens naturally. Also, using a decent framework like Bootstrap for simple projects automatically makes code Firefox compatible.

But I'm more frequently noticing that sites don't work with Firefox, that I have to switch to Chrome. The worst issue so far has been using WordPress; the default post editor simply doesn't work reliably with Firefox when doing basic text editing. That means Firefox can't be used on millions on sites that run WordPress. That's just sad.

arkitaip··on Launch HN: Ditto (YC W20) – Keep product text in sync from design to production
I think the front page does a good job at communicating considering how specialized this tool is and how small the audience it targets.

But maybe they could move the demo video closer to above fold? Also, is booking a demo really the most important CTA?

arkitaip··on The Quiet Web
"While I don’t think there is a definition that universally applies, I’ve found a definition that works relatively well. Exclude any page that has ads. Remove them if they use Google Analytics or Google Fonts. Remove them if they use scripts or trackers. It’s a hard filter that blocks the most popular sites. Forget YouTube, Facebook, Reddit, or Twitter. Forget the major news sites."

That's not a definition that helps us understand the qualities of a quiet web. Sometimes, thinking in metaphors can really hinder our ability to explore all the design space and not just the stuff that the metaphor borrows from.

arkitaip··on Ask HN: Why are there so many stages during the hiring process nowadays?
Surely this only happens at FAANGs and VC powered startups? No way ordinary companies can afford these expensive hiring practices where you can throw overqualified and underutilized professionals at your recruiting pipeline instead of fixing your processes.
arkitaip··on Facebook moderator: ‘Every day was a nightmare’
You probably don't want to employ the type of people who have no problems dealing with the worst type of content the web has to offer.
arkitaip··on ‘Roblox’ CEO Says Quest Makes “Perfect Sense” as Future Platform
If you haven't checked out Roblox, do your self a solid and give it a go. Then try Roblox Studio, the IDE used to visually create games. I've been having real fun using Roblox Studio with my 8-yo niece to try out game ideas she has had. Having created a couple of these "games" - more like playing around with built-in assets - I'm convinced Roblox does for kids what Basic did for a lot of middle-aged nerds when they were kids themselves.

You need to take a break. I'm not sure from what but you need to take a break.
arkitaip··on Elon Musk reveals he has Asperger's syndrome
This comes as a surprise to no one.
arkitaip··on [dead]
Just hodl for this latest cycle of insanity to blow over and people embracing vanilla html+js+css.
arkitaip··on Stack Overflow switches to system fonts on May 10, 2021
Wordpress default themes have been terrible for many years now. Design quality is sacrificed for showcasing some new WordPress feature or for the sake of a new theme because you know we have to have one each year instead of improving on the existing ones.
arkitaip··on Ask HN: How to marketing a generic SaaS for “office” use
This is such a specialized app, almost a feature to a larger app, that it's hard to even imagine a target for it. Did you stumble upon a problem in the wild that your app solves? Without a clear understanding of a target, you can't do marketing (and that's assuming there's a market for this). Even something basic like a persona could help you market this app better.

What about creating an addon for Google Docs that integrates with your app? Maybe a freemium offering can help reach customers?

Have you considered selling it on Flippa?
