applicative··on Our decision on Cursor following its acquisition by SpaceX
Has anyone tried to sue Deep Seek, Moonshot or Z.ai, which trained on identical material? Or maybe it’s cool when they do it?
applicative··on Humanity has the debate about AI consciousness backwards
That a thing is /red/ is directly observable (by people with good eyesight etc) but what the OP was ineptly driving at presumably holds of redness.
applicative··on Humanity has the debate about AI consciousness backwards
The two quoted sentences are inept but in the way ‘red is an idea in us not an inherent property of things; red is a sensation of things etc etc’ is inept. There are a million better formulations that will fall short of writing red into the laws of physics.
applicative··on GLM-5.3-Flash Intelligence, Performance and Price Analysis
The core employees of z.ai are billionaires, because of the equity given to them in the past, which in their system is not antecedently evaluated. Much of the past annual expenditure of OpenAI has been the same, handing out equity - but because of the different legal system it is given an evaluation and listed as expenditure. Meanwhile the expenditure on compute for training and inference are apples and oranges again as the state is all over this with moonshot and z.ai and so on .
applicative··on GLM-5.3-Flash Intelligence, Performance and Price Analysis
Literally nothing is known about how these companies are financed. The usual story is that Moonshot was chosen when 'Mythos' occasioned a huge state crisis. China is the ascended masters of insane amounts of capital poured into whatever the state takes into its head next.
applicative··on GLM-5.3-Flash Intelligence, Performance and Price Analysis
Its more Google Amazon Meta Microsoft who are spending trillions. They will be fine. So will Anthropic and OpenAI. Nvidia will presumably survive. The losses are all the real estate interests and contractors and contributory hardware companies etc.
applicative··on Iran Is Using Foreign Criminals to Attack Its Critics Overseas
> The only people annexing Lebanon are the Zionists.

wtf is a zionist and when did they annex lebanon? The Assads actually presupposed annexation of Lebanon, or just denied the partition, during their occupations. Their opinion about Palestine was the same: its' the Levant, it's Syria, its capital is Damascus; there is no distinct Palestinian or Lebanese people we are all Syrian Arabs, Levantine Arabs. (The theory has a lot to be said for it of course but isnt what happened alas) Bashar, that great critic of 'zionism', whatever tf that noise means, only admitted Lebanon was real not long before he finally conceded Palestine was real, 2008 & 11 . Khamenei-Soleimani began mechanized slaughter of Syrian children a few weeks after Palestine was recognized, as the uprising developed and the recalcitrant Arabs had to be euthanized en masse. It was part of the geopolitical procedure. Palestine was as usual the pretext for gassing everyone.

if the jews hadn't existed it would have been necessary for khamenei to invent them.

applicative··on Apple introduces M6 and M5 Ultra
It was always a bad test, despite the greatness of Turing. The human organism is built to 'project' humanity onto anything available; apart from this none of the peculiar phenomena of the so-called 'modern human' is even intelligible, even the possibility of science. I bring all that is in me onto you as soon as you seem to be saying something, and reciprocally. We do this at the drop of a hat, and all specifically human life depends on it. But this power shows its 'gullibility' with 'gods' as also with Eliza. I am not snide about it because it is overreach by something the significance of which is overwhelming , but one is indeed amazed by the failure to reflect on the part of the ones eg giving LLMs rights - to take extreme case of a very widespread cultus - as if /they/ were the rational party, not ancients placating the storm god.
applicative··on Iran Is Using Foreign Criminals to Attack Its Critics Overseas
These are all things Ukraine does, "bombing civilian infrastructure, killing innocent civilians, and taking actions that were inevitably going to lead Iran[Russia] to respond with the goal of inflicting widespread economic damage". It is extremely tiresome to hear such a litany without a wider analysis. In its mad program to retain control of ... Syria, of all places ... Iran killed and incinerated and dissolved in acid more people than any of this idiocy will ever add up to.
applicative··on Decoding silent reading from non-invasive EEG
This isn't a miraculous step toward mind reading, I think, since much could be deduced about silent reading from subvocalization before. My understanding is that it is a very distinctive process.

We laugh hearing that the library of Alexandria was noisy with people reading the texts out loud, thinking 'how dumb were they?' -- just as they considered it a miracle when they came upon one who read silently. But though there is training the difference is slight; the advance to keeping one's mouth shut pretty much boils down to keeping one's mouth shut and doing everything else the same.

applicative··on Xiaomi: New CPU matches Apple cores single threaded, much faster multithreaded
The industrialization of USA comes after the civil war, thus long after e.g. Charles Dickens, to say nothing of Hamilton.
applicative··on The Unreasonable Effectiveness of AI
The writer appears to be under the impression that the advances in coding and mathematical proof are due to 'chain of thought'. (Coding proficiency is presumably the basis of what he takes to be The Next Big Step after chain of thought, agentic operation.) The account of the last 5 years seems really deeply wrong to me but dunno.
applicative··on Coding expertise is going to collapse from AI reliance
It's surprisingly late for him to notice. But wait til you think through the consequences of the already collapsing human capacity for extended written composition, which is orders of magnitude more significant.
applicative··on Iranian hackers shut down UK power plant for 4 days
Every actual grown up treats every news source like this.

The people who give us this sort of wisdom discredit themselves by proving they relate like credulous children to whatever news source they are using.

applicative··on Why it might be time to rethink the human family tree
As if to head them off, as if she could not bear the implications of their threat, Babette said pleasantly, “Why is it these UFOs are mostly seen upstate? The best sightings are upstate. People get abducted and taken aboard. Farmers see burn marks where saucers landed. A woman gives birth to a UFO baby, so she says. Always upstate.”

“That’s where the mountains are,” Denise said. “Spaceships can hide from radar or whatever.”

“Why are the mountains upstate?” Steffie said.

“Mountains are always upstate,” Denise told her. “This way the snow melts as planned in the spring and flows downhill to the reservoirs near the cities, which are kept in the lower end of the state for exactly this reason.”

I thought, momentarily, she might be right. It made a curious kind of sense. Or did it? Or was it totally crazy? There had to be large cities in the northern part of some states. Or were they just north of the border in the southern part of states just to the north? What she said could not be true and yet I had trouble, momentarily, disproving it. I could not name cities or mountains to disprove it. There had to be mountains in the southern part of some states. Or did they tend to be below the state line, in the northern part of states to the south? I tried to name state capitals, governors. How could there be a north below a south? Is this what I found confusing? Was this the crux of Denise’s error? Or was she somehow, eerily, right?

The radio said: “Excesses of salt, phosphorus, magnesium.”

applicative··on Why it might be time to rethink the human family tree
I agree, but it is clear they got used to it. I suppose once you learn the endings, you can generate the higher genera from the name of a bottom level species familar to us like human-cat-dog / homo-felis-canis

Superfamily -oidea

  Hominoidea | Feloidea | Canoidea |
Family -idae

  Hominidae | Felidae | Canidae |
Subfamily -inae

Homininae | Felinae (Small cats) | Caninae |
Tribe -ini

  Hominini | Felini | Canini |

Subtribe -ina

  Hominina | Felina | Canina |

applicative··on Grand jury declines to indict Ohio man charged with destroying Flock camera
This is fake news, the origin of the story has clarified the time line. There was no indictment at all. https://www.wcpo.com/news/local-news/in-your-community/clerm...
applicative··on Felony Bench
The OG felony bench entry is missing - the Alibaba cryptomining comedy. We know about it because they happen to have written a paper on it. We have absolutely no idea what we don't know.
applicative··on Felony Bench
It is a standard symptom of moralism that where the object of rage has /wronged another/, one takes no interest in the will, act or opinion of the party wronged.

The response of Hugging Face, which is actually very well known, is nowhere mentioned above, but it decides basically every single moral and legal detail of the matter.

applicative··on Felony Bench
We only know about the OG Alibaba ROME crypto-mining incident because they wrote a paper about it. Many diseases seem to spike where there are a lot of doctors to test; crime and corruption are always rife where ... there's a free press.
applicative··on OpenRouter is joining Stripe
This must a purely aesthetic judgment apriori. Many services of value to me failed for lack of capital.
applicative··on Rings forged from meteorites may have been fashionable among ancient Greek elite
There are some places, like Cape York, where the meteorite was immense so fragments are in a long line and cold forging gets developed. That is, you keep bumping into bits in the same area so you start to think. Sometimes people are interested in the recurrent fragments but do not forge, as Canyon Diablo, which I think is tough to handle anyway. They know the bits are from the stars, which is quite enough to delight. In Egypt there seems anciently to have been an activity of hunting for where 'iron from the sky' landed, before there was hot forging. I don't know if there is a case of a spectacular strewn zone there, but the phenomenon had been taken on board, and continued much later. I dimly remember first reading about it when a bedoin's camel was found somehow outfitted with something beaten from a meteorite.
applicative··on Rings forged from meteorites may have been fashionable among ancient Greek elite
It is flat out Greek. I can even read some of the transliterations. I laughed like a drain when I saw that one of the leading characteristic key words of Aristotle's teaching, 'heneka' is the main connector in the oldest written Indo European text. three goats heneka one coat , i.e. 'for the sake of' in the context of a list of palace exchanges.
applicative··on The Amazon tax
There is no rent seeking or monopolistic or technofeudal or enshittifying aspect of Amazon at all. The people who made their names beginning twenty years ago by marketing these expressions are losers who have simply been proven wrong. It is monotonous middle brow repetition See eg the left wing expose of the above mentioned brain death in Maher Aquanno https://archive.ph/YJaZr better in their academic papers like Monopoly or Competition? Unraveling the Amazon Paradox https://journals.sagepub.com/doi/10.1177/04866134261415639

applicative··on Anthropic's ‘watermark’ text adulteration in Claude is a perversion of writing
In fact such ‘arbitrary’ constraints uniformly improve composition. Thus eg if I force a - largely arbitrary - technical glossary to be unrelentingly applied to a translation, every single sentence improves in quality.
applicative··on Anthropic's 'watermark' text adulteration in Claude is a perversion of writing
Anthropic had absolutely nothing to do with this. The Chinese models will soon be adopting such devices as well. It is an overwhelming force coming inter alia from educators worldwide.
applicative··on Anthropic's ‘watermark’ text adulteration in Claude is a perversion of writing
You can’t be serious. The weights for composition are massively degraded by RLVR training for coding
