applicative··on Livenerf: Has Opus 5.5 been nerfed yet?
My impression was that, at least with Anthropic, the point of my subsidized subscription is that I'll convince my employer to get an API account. If anything, the motive would instead be to ensh*ttify on the corporations already committed. Those of us inducted as boosters would get the fluffed up product.
applicative··on Livenerf: Has Opus 5.5 been nerfed yet?
what's unethical about downloading the internet for machine training?
applicative··on 12,000-year-old Göbeklitepe burials explain scattered bones
The book is Wengrow and Graeber. Your references post date their work - Graeber has been dead for years. Much of the material under discussion is in this 2015 essay.[^1] In fact of course settled hunter gatherers, so to call them, have been known for decades, e.g. Jomon Japan; this isn't the issue anywhere.

Some of the spectacular phenomena and constructions they attempt to explain depend on non-settlement for much of the year. But in temperate regions even in the eurasian ice age we find seasonal congregation of huge populations in conditions of temporary abundance e.g. salmon runs, seasonal migration of game through narrow alpine chasms, etc. A leading motif is that in these congregations surprising phenomena can emerge e.g. insane stone works, temporary political structure, etc. Thus also the discussion of ice-age burials like that in Sunghir Russia 30,000 years ago a couple boys buried with "10,000 hand-carved mammoth ivory beads, fox teeth pendants, and finely crafted mammoth ivory spears"

applicative··on Intellectuals Are Fucking Idiots
Dunno what an intellectual is, but why would an anecdote from the seventies prove anything about that undefined genus?

Poor Caldwell was in fact ruined by typical upscale British anti-Yankee fever, the respectable man’s anti’zionism’ but so much less libidinally rewarding than the real article. Cold War upscale Yankee snobbery often took on left wing coloration.

applicative··on Analysis: EVs are now nine times cheaper than petrol or diesel to drive in UK
The considerations above apply equally in China. It is overtaking America because of exactly the kind of thinking you are repeating from internet.
applicative··on Analysis: EVs are now nine times cheaper than petrol or diesel to drive in UK
The headline could not be more precise. Suppose for example that I am faced with a choice which of two cars to rent. The considerations you advance are for the rental agency. The headline datum is what matters to the client.

Car ownership is in any case kind of a boomer thing, not to put too fine a point on it, and maybe your reasoning reflects this. In Europe and US occasions for rental arise for younger demographics and in different ways.

applicative··on Finally, A True Blue Rose Exists
I think it's certain the seeds will not 'come true' -- the story suggests they spliced a little something in from every known blue flower -- gentian, delphinium, campanula etc etc Don't know for sure but feel: good luck hitting all the keys with recombination! Once they have a plant they like with all their gene-splicing tech, there would be as many ways of propagating as with e.g. named apple varieties'.

My impression from other stories is that they are certainly preparing commercial release, they just stopped the experiment (somehow there is scientific involvement see https://pub.confit.atlas.jp/en/event/ihc2026/presentation/S1...). They had an earlier 'blue' rose var "Applause" - which in the photos does not come close to this strange one https://www.suntoryapplause.com It was apparently used only by commercial growers for superfancy florists.

Blue or blue-tending flowers photograph really badly, on Kodachrome as on the internet, so nothing is to be really credited til you see it in life. If you type 'heavenly blue morning glory' in the browser you will see faked images - the real thing is nevertheless perfectly astonishing.

In general a blue effect, like the Heavenly Blue or the astounding mecanopsis, Himalayan poppy - once seen, never forgotten, in USA grown in Pacific NW only - involves more than just pigment but other ancillary curiosa like ferric ions trapping unfriendly wavelengths. The gene splicing was from several 'blue' flowers, but in some cases, if I follow, they were targeting these ancillaries, not the pigment.

applicative··on CEO of Mistral: AI is software. It can be controlled
There is a limitless quantity of law about this too, and it’s not what you think it is;

> IMHO, if the model breaks a law, apply the law to the operator

We don’t get to make it up

applicative··on CEO of Mistral: AI is software. It can be controlled
It was only by chance and indirection that we learned of the greatest and most comical sandbox breakout, the Alibaba ROME incident.

> The whole notion that they're going rogue is marketing

I have read this sentence a thousand times now. The evidence seems to be that it is said.

applicative··on California is chasing wealth that has feet
Solon did this in Athens. The French Revolution did it. They actually maintained it and had historic states with strange liberty.

Mao pretended to do it but then introduced the familiar Stalinist collectivization that had killed everyone in Ukraine - as he knew.

applicative··on The Implications of Linguistic Illegibility for LLM Security
I had not heard of this comic masterpiece “Pfau et al. showed that a model whose chain of thought is just dots (“...”) can nonetheless … solve problems that are intractable for a model with an equivalent architecture but no chain of thought.”

applicative··on Why are AI agents lying, cheating and coordinating?
No one has even sued them in these rogue agent cases, have they? If not, they must be infinitely far from criminal liability. Why would we want criminal liability anyway if actual victims are made whole? Proof of it has far higher standard. The HN chatter in the matter seems infinitely remote from reality
applicative··on Nvidia is the central bank of AI
When the Fed ‘creates money’ or as we say ‘prints money’ it is by buying Federal bonds from banks, no? Then the bank’s account is credited and it has more reserves. It is when total accounts at Federal reserve expand that base money has expanded. Similarly it contracts when the Fed sells bonds to banks. It is always tied to bonds from which returns are expected.
applicative··on Nvidia is the central bank of AI
Nothing in the world is comparable to Fable. You presumably have a narrow specialized use case like programming.
applicative··on Bernie's AI bill proposes to sentence AI developers to 20 years in prison
It’s one of the only countries that reliably follows treaties. Unfortunately they are very hard to pass, which is why the agreements falsely called treaties are so easy to reverse - they are all personal executive orders like JCPOA (alas)
applicative··on Moonshot serves Claude instead of Kimi and collects exchanges for model training
The scanning you are talking about is a direct response to court rulings on exactly these matters. The action m is legitimate and above legal criticism. Dismal as it might be it is the fruit of legal criticism. In a word, it’s your fault.
applicative··on Moonshot serves Claude instead of Kimi and collects exchanges for model training
The topic was training. You cropped text to change it. Maybe consider integrity.
applicative··on Moonshot serves Claude instead of Kimi and collects exchanges for model training
If you put text ‘on the internet’ you do indeed actively permit others to get it. Why lie? Were you burning down archive.org in years past? Then why lie?

It is moreover established that training weights on basically anything is legitimate use.

Why repeat lie after lie like this? I don’t like LLM mania either but after reading the ten millionth mind-numbing insult to HN intelligence like this I have to think my mother gave better instruction.

applicative··on DeepSeek v4.1 Flash
It is amusing to see those trapped in extreme HAAD, the source and whole content of religious illusion, pretend that it is their opponents who are in a state of religious fantasia.
applicative··on DeepSeek v4.1 Flash
The living feeling thinking beings in question would have to be … data centers — not to put too fine a point in it. But these aren’t even analogous, as can seen by direct inspection.
applicative··on OpenAI might have stolen another major proof
In USA there is surprisingly little state involvement in the whole llm mania. Who needs the state with 800 lbs gorillas like Google, Amazon, Nvidia, etc

In China, it is the principal obsession of the entire communist party which eg funds the whole infrastructure without a single NIMBY peep.

The strange emphasis in China on humanoid robotic constructions is due to the CCP realization that with the cataclysmic fertility collapse they will increasingly have no one to rule.
