I'm a Dutch freelance web dev who moved from Amsterdam to East Tennessee in the spring of 2016, right before a rip in the space-time continuum catapulted me into an alternate timeline where Donald Trump became president. Things have gotten weirder from there.

Good point!

Pixel user here, but I feel the same way. The fact that my phones are getting heavier instead of lighter seems counterintuitive on its face.

Pixel 1 (143g)

Pixel 3 (148g)

Pixel 5 (151g)

Pixel 8 (187g)

Pixel 9 Pro (198g)

Of course the displays of these models get bigger which presumably contributes to the weight increase. But still, you'd think parts get lighter over time, not heavier.

Thanks for working on this, would love to try this! Any chance for a prebuild APK anytime soon?
appel··on Mozilla to shut down Pocket and Fakespot
Thank you! Hope you don't mind, but I took the liberty to have Gemini convert it to python, since I'm not familiar with Deno. Appears to work just fine. I posted a gist here in case it is useful to anyone else: https://gist.github.com/appel/a6accfab384f80cb12c9c20a1075e9...

I'm of course happy to take it down if you do mind, just let me know. And thank you again!

appel··on Zelensky leaves White House after angry meeting
Deeply embarrassing and disturbing. What a sad spectacle to see the President and Vice President of the United States so beholden to a foreign dictator that they would debase themselves in this way. Unpresidential doesn’t even begin to describe it.

My heart breaks for Ukraine. The outcome of the November 5, 2024, election will prove to be a tragic mistake.

appel··on Show HN: Wampy, interface addon for Linux-based Walkmans
Oh man, this is exciting! Running Mr Walkman FW on my NW-A45, so looks like I should be good to go.
appel··on Fixing E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial for the Atari 2600 (2013)
For what it's worth, I was able to simply rename the ET_Fixed_Final.bin file to ET_Fixed_Final.a26 (which might not even be necessary) and drop it into the ROM folder of my Atari 2600 emulator (running via https://knulli.org/ on my Anbernic RG40XXV). It booted up just fine.

Can I ask what it was you found?

All this is truly, truly outstanding, except for one bit:

Kenton, you have made a grave mistake.

appel··on Grim Fandango
Excellent article and absolutely fair points by the author. As a kid I completely fell in love with the characters and ambiance, but got hopelessly stuck in Act 1. In fact, I don't think I ever made it out.

But man, what a great story and what a beautiful style. I always half expected to see Hollywood pick this up and turn it into a movie. Just imagine what the folks at Pixar could do with this (with Tim Schafer as executive producer, of course).

appel··on Google Pixel 9 Pro
Yeah, that sounds perfect. To go from my 256GB P8 to a 256GB P9 Pro would cost me about $610 + 10% tax after trade-in which I don't think I'll have the stomach for.
appel··on Google Pixel 9 Pro
Google's trade-in estimates for the P9 Pro:

Pixel Fold (256/512): $760

Pixel 8 Pro (128/256/512/1TB): $699

Pixel 8 (128/256): $490

Pixel 7a: $300

Pixel 7 Pro (128/256/512): $540

Pixel 7 (128/256): $360

Edit: there's a complete overview of all trade in estimates in this post: https://slickdeals.net/f/17689866-buy-pixel-9-pro-or-pixel-9...

appel··on Google Pixel 9 Pro
I'm glad they finally went this route. I can't be the only one who usually wants the specs of the Pro but always opts for the smallest phone (p1, p3, p5 & now p8).
appel··on Jake Seliger has died
I'm so sorry. I only learned about Jake due to his post the other day. I understood this was coming but still felt shock and sadness when I learned just now he has passed. Wishing you much strength.

I'm probably showing my age, but I'm just at awe what is possible in a browser in this day and age. Well done, OP. I'd love a hashed out, full length version of this, but with the same vector graphics.
appel··on OpenAI: Start using ChatGPT instantly
I'll never understand companies making genuine product announcements on April 1st, the most famous example of this has to be Gmail. I mean, really? You just have to do it on this day? Couldn't just do it yesterday or tomorrow, or any of the 364 other days in the year?

I do this, occasionally. Didn't realize this was a thing other people do, too. For some reason it really works in terms of making me feel more appreciative for my health and the many years I (hopefully) have left to live my life.
