Slackware because it's secure, stable, and I don't get caught up in all the silly gui changing and whatever that I used to. It's helped me learn a ton and comes with everything I need. Also, I like supporting the older distros.
Debian for most of the same reasons, but a little better support. Plus, it's all free software (with access to non), which I feel is important.
You definitely can't do a lot of the things you used to be able to, but I feel like there are features in freepbx and asterisk that make phones extremely fun.
edit: also, this site is incredibly interesting for those interested in more info http://www.wideweb.com/phonetrips/
Most , I think if it's not forced on you at an earlier age, it's a decision, not something that passively happens to most folks. Until I deliberately decided to become and adult, it felt as though I always dreaded it. I'm privileged, though, and hadn't gone through any long term situation that required me to grow up before I was ready.
As a final note, I'd say a lot of it was working with older folks I looked up to and respected that were mature. Surrounding yourself with those who behave the way you want to is a good way to learn. Behavior is an interest, just like other hobbies.
That said, the signup process for this is horrible, all the micro videos and all.
I've read a ton of stories lately about folks who barely bled/hurt and ended up requiring surgery.
The problem with cat bites is that people don't know how they can cause sepsis and kill you within a few days, despite appearing relatively minor. If their teeth penetrates ligament lining, it can totally destroy it, etc.
My doctor told me they'll clean dog bite and send you on your way, but a cat bite they may hospitalize you for days for monitoring, antibiotics, etc. expecting a wide variety of dangerous ailments.
You can buy all the toys, trees, and catnip you want, but sometimes cats just behave in a way we don't prefer as pet owners. Doesn't mean you or your roommate are at fault like others are saying.
My podcast is Accidentally Fasting. Again, not related to tech at all, but I get to play around with this stuff since it's such an open format. Thanks for checking us out!

To give an idea why I think it is so cool, my podcast offers neat things to folks who call in to leave a voicemail. You can listen to entire podcast episodes, explore a crude phone sound "museum", and if you're a subscriber to the podcast you are given the password to our party line, where you can talk to our hosts and other subscribers. I'm also building a choose your own adventure type game on our phone system using IVRs and things for our top tier subscribers to play.
We're not a phone-centric podcast, but it's super easy supplemental content to provide folks for cheap. It's also currently running in the raspberrypi specific release http://www.raspberry-asterisk.org/
There are other folks who absolutely rely on Asterisk for their shows, some that have been around forever, like the Phone Losers of America Snow Plow Show.
jk, but also not.
w !sudo tee % in vim, even tho that's not really directly a unix thing?
The DR reported the bite to the state, who forced a home investigation and vet checks on me. Even though it's no longer infected, my finger/hand still hurts and I expect it to for a long time. The whole thing cost me time away from work, prescriptions/medical stuff, and the cat's vet exam. 10/10 will never own a cat again, especially if I had kids in the house.
