aplummer··on Scientists improve anti-tumor power of CAR-T cells
That’s called luck. Babies don’t get leukemia because they lack diet and exercise.
aplummer··on Tech workers remain some of the highest paid in New Zealand
It’s honestly ridiculous how poorly paid SWEs are in Aus / NZ.

Seriously consider working in the states for a few years if you can get an E3 visa, and if you don’t like it head home in 4-6 years with a million bucks.

aplummer··on Mac Mouse Fix
I'm surprised not to see more people use my setup, mouse in primary hand, Magic Trackpad along the opposite side of the keyboard for the other.

It's mostly to enable gestures and padding / swiping in macOS, but its also pretty nice getting to pan with one hand and use the pointer with the other.

aplummer··on EU opens Microsoft antitrust investigation into Teams bundling
I don’t really understand your comment about office being expensive (it has excel) or it seeming unavoidable, it is actually unavoidable (it has excel).
aplummer··on EU opens Microsoft antitrust investigation into Teams bundling
This isn’t how boring big corp works - teams is free and slack isn’t. This is because MS office licenses are 100% necessary / paid for already, and SSO is mandatory. I know a big 4 accounting firm I worked at switched exactly along these lines, so that’s ~ a million licenses.
aplummer··on New study suggests that lab-grown meat produces up to 25 times more CO2
I’m surprised at the skepticism here on HN.

Was everyone this skeptical / glib when the (insert technology) was useless when it was invented? Anyone seen the efficiency of a solar panel in 1970?

Factory farming is a real problem to solve.

aplummer··on Ask HN: How to Break into AI Engineering
Have you tried recently? I was one of these people in high school but now in my 30s, stuff that seemed impossible no longer does. Maybe me or the context is different.
aplummer··on South Australia passes law to ban “disruptive” protests
Well it’s the number 1 cause of death for children, I would be worried about the thing statistically most likely to kill me, but YMMV.

Conversely, venomous creatures have killed approximately zero people in a hundred years.

aplummer··on South Australia passes law to ban “disruptive” protests
This is basically how it has always been in Australia.

Someone’s freedom to protest is not more important than someone else’s freedom to use that same space to get to work, live their life, etc. Protests have always needed to be booked in advance and are essentially always approved (with police protection included for neo nazis etc).

You seem to be describing the freedom of America (a right to a gun, but not a right to be free from the fear of getting shot) but it’s not like that everywhere, see even more extreme examples like the “guilty until proven innocent” case of libel in Australia.

I’m not saying either way is better or worse, just that this is the status quo really for Australia.

aplummer··on Twitter engineering boss Foad Dabiri quits day after DeSantis launch glitches
> I think Musk’s product vision is noble and clear: to make Twitter as neutral and transparent a speech platform as possible. No soft censoring, algorithmic manipulation, etc.

You should look up (or speak to ex twitter employees) about how pro censorship and pro-algorithmic manipulation he has been. The difference is when the topic is related to him or his companies.

aplummer··on Meta is about to start its next round of layoffs
Yeah I laughed at this. Whether or not you like the business model, Quest and AI are in Burlingame and is obviously very hard groundbreaking work.
aplummer··on Show HN: Former game devs building a platform showcasing game projects
Can’t you just right click and hide it
aplummer··on How to store your app's entire state in the url
I do like the approach and when it works great thats fantastic - please be careful of this as an attack vector.

I know of at least one bank where this was exploited, because people see the base url, assume safe, and can't read the embedded escape / javascript in the longer part. Especially when the link is zipped into a little clickable thing and you can't see the URL at all.

aplummer··on How to store your app's entire state in the url
The limit disappeared after ie9, however can and should are different things here
aplummer··on Investors conclude that Tesla is a carmaker, not a tech firm
I think everyone else just turns on CarPlay / Android Auto and forgets they have an infotainment system.
aplummer··on I was laid off 2 months ago and I’ve never even seen a severance letter
It’s “unprofitable” losing a few hundred million with a billion a year in r&d. call me naive but not that much changes on Twitter there’s not research to leave on the table. The kind of thing you can turn around with 20% (deep but normal) cost cutting.

Now that they have loans to pay and far less revenue? A much worse situation.

aplummer··on Apple only lets me choose a default search engine from its pre-approved list
Yeah this kind of thing is very interesting, it does look like safari supports it.
aplummer··on Apple only lets me choose a default search engine from its pre-approved list
Exactly the kind of thing I was looking for, thanks
aplummer··on Apple only lets me choose a default search engine from its pre-approved list
Thanks good suggestions. I think both your last options would work. Either one could be passed through automatically with a deep link from their website (either the search engine base url or your special url in the last point)
aplummer··on Apple only lets me choose a default search engine from its pre-approved list
I’m more interested in my actual question. If there is some sort of interoperable API or something, not engaging with hostile glib one liners.
aplummer··on Apple only lets me choose a default search engine from its pre-approved list
So how would you code this feature so it works with any search engine off the bat and how would the team know this might be a priority to develop next if you haven’t filed a radar?
aplummer··on How tech’s defiance of economic gravity came to an abrupt end
Honestly 12 months is too short a time period to be looking at companies like Apple, which is larger than the whole ASX or FTSE100.

It’s even with 2 years, it’s up 4x on 5 years ago.

aplummer··on California’s population shrinks for third straight year
“Never not been a problem” it was a double negative I think you are agreeing.
aplummer··on Milk and dairy products: good or bad for human health? (2016)
Can you point to an actual error in the design of the study (please reference away, I want to know study flaws) and not just attack the scientist?
aplummer··on Ask HN: Anyone tired of everything being a subscription now?
> I don't believe SaaS is moral

> I basically pirate everything that requires a subscription now or us a FOSS alternative… and now when I can afford to pay for subscriptions but the situation with lack of control over SaaS is so fucking untenable that I just can't.

Imagine stealing peoples work you admit you can afford, and claiming their business model is immoral!

aplummer··on Facebook tracking is illegal in Europe
Economic expansion is felt a lot worse in the opposite direction though. I buy products targeted with advertising to me all the time.
aplummer··on State of CSS
their 6 year old Lenovo with ie10
aplummer··on Kim Jung Gi has died
There are so many bizarre jumps in logic here it's actually impossible to address. All I can say is you need to speak to an actual (or better yet, several) epidemiologists about vaccine efficacy and the efficacy of the covid vaccines.

For anyone impressionable reading, I just want to point out:

> We're witnessing a large increase in non-covid excess deaths of young-to-middle-aged persons in countries with high covid shot uptake

This is false, the CDC is not lying, the vaccines are safe and effective. I recommend reading: https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/vaccines/safety/sa... and the number of studies linked inside if you would like to read further.

aplummer··on RTX 4090 review: Spend at least $1,599 for Nvidia’s biggest bargain in years
It just can do 4k. I’m one of these people, my only monitor is a Pro Display so I need every last % because less than 4k is unplayable on it.
aplummer··on Kim Jung Gi has died
Once you publish your peer reviewed paper I look forward to retracting my comment as you are globally lauded.
